The NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.

There was/were no incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. One outgoing message(s) was/were sent.

We received an application.  The application review process is under way.  Copies of the CV were sent to forum Admins/Moderators.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet.  This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access.  We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

We have 11,000 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through  18,344 are waiting for finishing touches.  We have run out of Usernames that may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members. We are transitioning to a campaign to repair posts that contain artifacts that prevent proper display.  That may take six months or more, or it might take less depending upon how many posts there are that need to be visited. Scan of 35,000 posts out of 80,000 were completed. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in development.  A series of manual tests were completed.  Code to perform updates is in development, and it is now in debug/testing mode.

We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

The author of a concept for a 17 person expedition to Mars has specifically requested participation by peers to help.

A proposal for an 8 member expedition is in review.

RobertDyck could use assistance of all kinds in development of the Large Ship proposal. There are three animation/drawing systems in play.
Fusion 360 is a version of commercial software by AutoDesk that is available for student non-commercial use. It requires a beefy computer.
Blender is a free animation package that includes drawing capability.

The Large Ship project may stimulate spinoff activities, such as a full scale greenhouse in LEO built to Large Ship specifications.

The My Hacienda topic is in need of 7,800 individuals to populate a virtual community to simulate self-sustainability on Mars

The subject of abundant energy supply for the population of Earth (and Mars in due time) is under discussion in the Nuclear Power is Safe topic.  It seems reasonable (to me at least) to suppose all fossil fuel power stations can be replaced with modular nuclear fission packages quite rapidly if the people of Earth decide that is a good idea.  It appears the leadership of China thinks that is a good idea for their nation.

A book was recommended for discussion: Beyond Oil and Gas: The Methanol Economy by Olah, Goeppert and Prakash
Abundant energy from modular fission reactors is continuing to receive attention.

A new challenging pair of topics just arrived on the scene ...

Recent discussion is in-depth about how to design an orbital refueling facility.  An interesting concept is a Giant Syringe able to handle cryogenic fluids.  Ullage thrusters appear to be favored at this point, and electric/ion engines may come into their own for this purpose.

Recently a member who goes by "Louis" launched a topic that offers an opportunity to develop sophisticated 3D Vision/robotic software to stack stones on Mars.  It should be possible to replicate the skill set of ancient human stone masons who have built very long lasting structures without mortar.  An obvious first application for such software is to build cairns as way markers for early travelers on Mars.

The current issue of Analog Science Fiction & Fact includes a Science Fact article on fusion reactors in orbit.  There appear to be significant advantages to placing a fusion reactor in orbit.

There is a new opportunity for engineers to design a rover to find landing sites for Starship class vehicles.  The rover needs to be able to determine solidity of the terrain using appropriate sensing techniques.  A new topic has been created for this discussion.

A book was recommended for discussion: "Plentiful Energy" (about fission reactors).

Use of molten sand as an energy storage medium is a new topic of discussion. Subsequently a practical "Hot Rocks" energy storage method was reported to the forum.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Here is a revised version of the application for membership.

This one is available for showing to the entire world.

--

To Whom It May Concern,

How did you find out about the forum?

My name is Clinician_Antilles and I am a recent college graduate and medical school applicant. In exploring my desires to be a physician, I realized I wanted my impact to extend beyond just my patient population. I needed to find a specialty within medicine that enabled me to combine my interest for research with my clinical practice in a field that required further elucidation and investigation. In order to do this, I examined ways that I could combine pre-existing interests into a career path within medicine. I could not help but think back to my childhood when my mom first showed me Star Wars. I remembered the excitement I felt before watching each movie, and the wonder at all the technology I saw displayed. I would marvel at how Luke had a prosthetic hand, or how he was engulfed in bacta and came out fully healed. My imagination ran free and wild, and I became excited about the possibilities of what the medicine of the future had to offer. This was the start of my fascination in space and it’s potential, which led to me joining the Mars Society to see what current space medicine actually pertained to. I realized through reading through the New Mars Society Forum that this was an incredibly niche field, with huge gaps in knowledge requiring research and exploration. It requires understanding of medical, aerospace, and physics concepts in a comprehensive approach that would allow me to pursue novel findings that in my eyes, would have an impact in pushing humanity forward. An example is Kernal Biologics, who recently presented at the 2021 ISSRDC conference. They confirmed that their engineered mRNA was oncoselective thanks to microgravity environment testing, research that has implications for millions of people affected by cancer. I want to devote my life to discoveries like these with global benefits. I wholeheartedly believe that as an aerospace physician focusing on space medicine, I would be pursuing a field that I am passionate about and can become a pioneer in.

How would you like to help the forum?

I hope that by applying to be a member of the Mars Forum, I can help take a leadership role in creating a sort of medical database for members to read and discuss findings in space medicine research by far to help create an exchange of ideas that could be useful to the larger Mars Society community mission. One of the primary ways I could accomplish this is by using the NASA ISS research portal for reading and compiling human research that has been published on the portal. If I had a team of individuals to work with, we could read these articles and then perform literature reviews to help condense the information and if necessary paraphrase it to help disseminate to a larger audience. This could help provide material for projects like GenMars as well as any other outreach we would be interested in doing. I believe that reading and indexing the information perhaps into different topics( Ex. Radiation damage vs. preventing Muscle atrophy) could help make it easier for interested members to break down the topic into smaller digestible pieces, with perhaps a general summary/problem list prefacing this section. In addition, I think it would be prudent to reach out to the Aerospace Medicine departments of the medical schools with aerospace divisions, as they are actively performing research into this area. Hopefully with the research studied and discussions that take place, we will be able to have a dialogue with them or perhaps even organize periodic chats about new findings or future directions of space medicine.

I am interested in talking more about the needs of the Mars Society and the ways that I could use my experience to help further our mission in practical measures. I personally believe that there is a significant amount of medical research that needs to happen in order to make human flight to Mars possible, and so discussions toward practical future applications of research would help accelerate this timeline. I would love to speak with you further regarding this topic if you have time for a phone chat sometime in the next week. I understand with the restoration projects and logistics of the forum this may be difficult, but I appreciate your consideration all the same.

--

The section below is addressed to NewMarsMember.  However, I think it will be of interest to forum members..

In response to how I can help build up a cadre of leaders I think that the most important thing to do would be start to form a network of interested healthcare professionals with experience in the topic. The Mayo Clinic and Wright State would both be great resources to get involved in the clinical research side of things, and to provide us an idea of what direction research is trending on that field. Ideally it would also expose us to medical students pursuing an aerospace medicine residency, who I wager will be the most interested in participation.

Outside of this, I think of individuals like Hayley Arceneaux from the recent SpaceX flight as ideal individuals to reach out to and bring in some perspective as well. It seems that the aim with the Hacienda project would be to flesh out an idea of medical practice, which is exciting because it allows me the opportunity to see we can create with the input of a comprehensive medical team. I think it would be a great idea for me to pick this up later on, once there is a more established medical database and I have a bit more knowledge of all the considerations I should be making.

I am currently doing this by reading the posts that you recommended!

Finally, your concern with my involvement is completely valid! I should note that my career aims are to pursue aerospace medicine as my medical speciality. I hope that one day I will have the opportunity to go to space and have a hand in moving humanity forward by impacting the research and practices that will need to emerge. This is my passion, and I want to immerse myself in what I want to do sooner than later. It is my hope that my efforts on the forum aid me in my own desire to achieve a mastery on this topic and prepare me for my own career. Because of this, I see this as a long term commitment and want to have some time every day set aside to my education on this topic. I am truly excited to learn and have an avenue of participation where I can learn from those who know more than me!

I think staying in touch with the forum will definitely not be a problem for me as a result of this.

Cheerfully,

Approvals are in hand from SpaceNut and tahanson43206.

Scan of 46,000 posts out of 80,000 were completed. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in development.  A series of manual tests were completed.  Code to perform updates is in development, and it is now in debug/testing mode.

Preliminary results of a test edit run over 10 posts came back looking good.  The counts of bytes removed were correct. The output text appears to be intact and free of unwanted text.

There are nearly 8 billion people on Earth these days, and several billion have access to the Internet.  This forum is accessible to ** every ** Earth citizen with Internet access.  We ** know ** the site is of interest to spammers! Hopefully it is of interest to others who want to use their time more productively.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership.  Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

Scan of 59,000 posts out of 80,000 were completed. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in development.  A series of manual tests were completed.  Code to perform updates is finished and tested. It is waiting for final approval.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures to apply for membership.  Mention specific assistance you wish to provide.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address.  If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to this email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Some days on the NewMars portal are more significant than others. Today would have to rank near the top.

We received a copy of the final version of the Lander Proposal, exactly as it was mailed to SpaceX.  We also received an email from SpaceNut with a request for the updated version.  The updated version was forwarded to Mr. Burk, along with the URL of the Deltion company.

Scan of 74,000 posts out of 80,000 were completed. Procedures to revise posts containing unneeded text are in place.  Code to perform updates is finished and tested. It is waiting for final approval.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
