Re: Flag on Mars

Those of us who are regular contributors to this website are sufficiently adult and responsible to discuss things without the threat of violence and riots for our positions we state.
Talking to friends around the country, however, the threats to personal safety and destruction of their homes and property by the operatives of this new Far Left (Marxist-Socialist-Race Baiting agenda), are very real. In some of the more "Progressive" cities such as Portland and Seattle, even the absence of a sign in the window of their homes supportive of BLM leads to vandalism and trashing of their automobiles.
I support the right of Free Speech and also support the planting of flags as a "we were here" symbol, but taking possession of Mars or the Moon by any country so bold as to try it is is ludicrous and stupid.

Re: Flag on Mars

Oldfart1939,

Yes, the left went from supporting freedom of speech, even for those they disagreed with, to weaponizing their ideology to strip the right to freedom of speech / expression from others they have political disagreements with, labeling them racists / white supremacists / xenophobes / extremists to marginalize all other view points outside of their orthodoxy, followed by de-humanization (what the actual literal / historical communists and nazis did), swiftly followed by committing acts of violence against anyone who doesn't sufficiently kowtow to their ideology, which is constantly changing such that whatever was acceptable today becomes completely unacceptable tomorrow.  There's no morality to their ideology that I can follow.

It does seem to be rooted in viewing all social and political issues as victim / oppressor relationships (objectively false narratives / fabrications, obviously) rather than anything more complicated than that.  They also seem to be able to justify (to themselves) whatever they do, no matter how inconsistent with what they claim to want.  It's the worst form of tribalism that exists, pitting brother against brother based upon immutable physical characteristics, because the Democrat Party never really moved on from that horrific idea, and it's also completely incompatible with the ideals that this country was founded upon.  The mere fact that certain people historically failed to live up to the ideals of our nation, has no bearing on what's going on today.  We're living through strange times to be sure, but the social and political turmoil is not dramatically different than what transpired in the 60s and 70s.

Some people take Musk with a pinch of salt, he is known for his meme troll style posts but had changed his online bio on social media to "Imperator of Mars" like some kind of Historical Roman Emperor or Cyberpunk King of Technology found in some video game world...
so cried about democracy on Mars...maybe not.

Outer Space Treaty, formally the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, is a multilateral treaty that forms the basis of international space law. Negotiated and drafted under the auspices of the United Nations, it was opened for signature in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union today there are 111 countries are parties to the treaty—including all major spacefaring nations—and another 23 are signatories.

Before the Outer Space Treaty there was International Telecommunication Union is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for all matters related to information and communication technologies. Established in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, making it the oldest international organization, the ITU headquarters, Geneva in Switzerland, Houlin Zhao was elected as the 19th Secretary-General of the ITU at the Plenipotentiary Conference in Busan. The Rescue Agreement of the UN requires that any state party that becomes aware that the personnel of a spacecraft are in distress must notify the launching authority and the Secretary General of the United Nations. There is no fixed percentage of ownership for the whole International Space Station. Rather, Article 5 of the IGA sets forth that each partner shall retain jurisdiction and control over the elements it registers and over personnel in or on the Space Station who are its nationals

The newer Moon version of a Treaty not always better? the Moon Treaty or Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies or Moon Agreement, is a multilateral treaty that turns jurisdiction of all celestial bodies (including the orbits around such bodies) over to the participant countries. In 2020, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order called "Encouraging International Support for the Recovery and Use of Space Resources." The order emphasizes that "the United States does not view outer space as a 'global commons" and calls the Moon Agreement a "a failed attempt at constraining free enterprise."

The latest agreements with international partners and NASA, the Artemis Accords are an international agreement between governments participating in the Artemis Program, an American-led effort to return humans to the Moon by 2024, with the ultimate goal of the United States and otehr nations expanding space exploration.
