Re: Some board problems

I've noticed that in the 'Moon first' thread there are a few small problems cropping up. Alexander commented that he had some difficulty with editing one of his messages, and also, now that the thread is at 27 messages it should be split up into two pages - which it is, but the first page has all the messages and the second page has none.

I'm not entirely sure why this has happened - however, the thread is still there and most likely all of this is down to a bug in the software (which is still at Beta 7 at this point). I'm confident that this problem will be sorted out in the next Beta revision.

Re: Some board problems

I trying to post this message 'A Private MSR-ISPP' and it keeps deleting the body of the message and just posting the title. There are now three messages of the same title with nothing on them (that presumably also includes the latest attempt). The error message was

Ikonboard has exited with the following error:

File:/your/path/to/cgi-bin/ikonboard/Database/forum_posts/f7/forum_posts-3.cnt.db Reason:No such file or directory

This error was reported at: Sources/iDatabase/Driver/DBM.pm line 378.

Please note that your 'real' paths have been removed to protect your information.

...Which was posted on the page which came up after I clicked post.

Re: Some board problems

Yes, that's a bit peculiar. However, it's easy to fix - and should be fixed in about 5 minutes. The problem is that when I archived the board way back when, there were no posts in that particular forum (Unmanned probes). Ditto for a few other forums. Because of this, the forum software archived some, but not all, of the files for those forums.

Anyway, it's easy to remedy, I'll just delete those forums and add them back again. This is obviously a bug in the software, but what the ####, it's still in beta (only just - release candidate 3 now) and it's free as well.

Re: Some board problems

Hmm, there are no posts here by me.  sad

I could have sworn I had a little debate with Stu in Red Views. And I'll be buggered if I didn't say a thing or two in Mars? Moon first...  ???

Maybe I'm losing it, though. tongue

Good to have the site back, either way. smile

Re: Some board problems

There I can help you  smile All the old posts are still there, believe me, I checked - it's just that the default forum view is to only show topics newer than 30 days old. I've just changed that so it shows all topics. You can actually set this up yourself, but I figured changing the default view would be better.

During the wee hours when I was busy cursing the forum software, FTP connection and computers in general, the thought did cross my mind that it would be so much easier if I just did a blank reinstall of the board. Then I realised the amount of flak I would get off people for all the good threads (Red Views being a notable example) and decided otherwise  tongue

Nah, that wasn't the problem. My last post showed that I only had one post...

Fortunately, the only post I really minded losing I had archived (a response to Stu in Red Views), and if you can't figure out what happened I'll just resubmit it. smile

Re: Some board problems

Is having each message reviewed by a moderator really necessary? The amount of time it takes makes communication rather slow. It would really be better if it was a free board... if people start posting ads or something, just delete them.

Re: Some board problems

Whenever I tried to register and edit my profile I kept running into the error "Cannot Open File:  Calendar.cfg (no such directory or file)."  It still let me register but the program
didn't indicate that I had successfully registered since it threw up that error.  It wasn't until I tried to re-register that I realized that the program had in fact successfully registered me.  Might be something for you to look into.

Re: Some board problems

It's just been pointed out to me that there was a *major* bug in the functioning of these forums in that you had to have posts 'approved' before they could be seen. This is actually a feature, really, not a bug, but I hadn't realised it was switched on and now it has been switched off on all forums. Consequently, there should be no problems in making posts anywhere and if there are, please message me.

In addition, it seems that people have been having problems registering - I've just done a forum recount and some other stuff, and if the problem persists, please email me.

Re: Some board problems

I encounter these problems sometimes. I honestly can't say for sure what the problem is. However, I've found that the incomplete loading of pages occurs *far* more often on slower connections (e.g. 56k) than broadband connections. I think part of the problem is that in threads with long posts, the page can be pretty massive and so take a while to load properly.

I don't think the server is the problem - New Mars is hosted on Pair, who have an excellent reputation for industrial-class service. I'll try to look into this a bit more though.

Re: Some board problems

Hi Adrian!
I often have trouble accessing posts in forums with lots of entries.
e.g. At the moment there are 39 posts in The Face on Mars, spread over just two pages. i.e. about 19 posts per page. I simply can't access the last entry on page two because it will only load so many entries and then stops ... sometimes cutting an entry off in mid sentence!
For the sake of us poor b******s with antiquated internet access facilities, would it be possible to limit the entries to about 12 per page, or less if they're long-winded?
       Thanks, Adrian!

Re: Some board problems

Ack! I realise this is a serious problem - it does also happen very infrequently for me at university (100Mbps connection). I'll ask the webhosts about it again. For the meantime, I've limited topic page length to 15 posts. If people are still experiencing problems, I can limit it even more.

I don't think it's a problem with the software - a bug like this would've been picked up and corrected early in betatesting. It seems to be something to do with transmission of the pages.

Sorry to bring a Veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery old topic up out of the muck, from back when adrian and josh were here all of the time, but I would like to suggest that the 'bug' adrian mentioned would be turned on in the intelligent alien life forum.  Unless this was in the days of Ikonboard, and is unusable now.  Intelligent life seems to be the place for spammers, trolls, and professional photoshoppers tongue  big_smile  smile  wink

Re: Some board problems

We learned early on that if we don't confine conspiracy people to one area (and make sure they post there), then the whole board explodes with those types of posts. Adrian created Intelligent Alien Life, in large part, for that purpose.

There's a very ... erm ... hands off editing policy here.
