Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

We did have a topic for Zubrin question but it did not get much in response and they were third party.

Ask Robert Zubrin

Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread*

you also have  AMA (Reddit) with Mars Society President Robert Zubrin

We also have the many messages from Zubrin for how the Gateway is a toll both to the moon and others here which may get some discusion but with no interaction from Zubrin its just us in the echo chamber such as
Dr. Zubrin on Musk Plans

Moon Direct: How to build a moonbase in four years using the Falcon heavy with just 4 launchings on the home page for newmars http://newmars.com/.

Each video could be a separate topic in the outreach area of the forum such as Other space advocacy organizations or use the Mars Society International.
Give the link and a start out content summary for each might work.

Like you say pushing out emails to direct them here for discusion in each of the topics might get some new members.

I never got any folder response for the business opportunity content that is being create for the forum by James but it could have been that we have to many projects and not enough man hours to accomplish all  of them with the current paid personnel that the society has.

Maybe its time to push for the chapters once more....

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

For SpaceNut re topic ....

Thanks for Post #26

This really is a challenge to figure out ...

The charm of this forum is the low active membership.

A drawback of a low active membership is the narrow range of expertise available.

By attracting more members (especially ones with expertise and a generous spirit to share that expertise) the flow of posts would increase until it becomes difficult to keep up with.

Regarding your suggestion of posting links to videos in topics other that this one ... What is wrong with this one?  The topic was set up to focus on the Convention, and the videos are from the convention.

I'll hold off on taking any action to start this until I see at least ** one ** committed participant.

We (forum) are off to a quiet start.

Mars University: Building the Multiplanetary Academic Bridge

October 23, 2020

Would you like to join intensive graduate-level classes on the exploration and settlement of Mars? During Mars Society’s 23rd Annual Convention, Mars University co-hosted a 60-minute panel about their first annual five-week Mars Summer Program (MSP) in July 2021, which is now accessible on YouTube. Three Cofounders at Mars University (MarsU) and Dr. Daniel Tompkins, Faculty for Agriculture at MarsU, discussed the details of the in-person certificate-based Program, which will provide a detailed technical overview of the science, technologies, engineering, and post-arrival activities that will enable humans and machines to develop a self-sustaining civilization on the Martian surface.

MarsU encourages young professionals, rising third and fourth-year undergraduates, and graduates to sign up on the Student Interest Survey before the Student Application period opens on November 13, 2020. MarsU also encourages applicants to attend the online MSP Information Session on November 28 from 11-12 PM PDT for exciting updates about the Summer Program, host partner location, and four technical courses.

“We might be the first school in the Solar system dedicated to making life multi-planetary”, mentioned by Kolemann Lutz, Cofounder at MarsU. Toward the end of the panel around 2 AM EDT, Bruce Mackenzie, Cofounder at MarsU and Founder of Mars Foundation, discussed the future vision for Mars University to build research stations and an analog settlement campus on Earth and eventually a campus on Mars.

MarsU also looks forward to partnering with the Marspedia Project, the first collaborative open-source online encyclopedia for exploring and settling the red planet, which has 692 articles on their website and 188 registered contributors. If you are interested in getting involved and submitting content and articles, request a Marspedia account by visiting the site and placing your mouse on "Guest" in the top right of the screen, then selecting "Request account".

In supporting the global Artemis Moon to Mars program, MarsU looks forward to developing a spacefaring partnership with the Mars Society and other space organizations throughout the Solar system. In the meantime, follow MarsU on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.
This is a one-time mailing from MarsU; there is no need to unsubscribe.

Note mention of: Bruce Mackenzie

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

All inclusive topics have a tendency to not be very clear for discusion of specifics and then conflagrate contents in ways as to continue to not be clear as to what is being discussed and its a suggestion.

Here's another email from the Mars Society ...

MARS SOCIETY ANNOUNCEMENT
View this email in your browser

Top 5 Winners of Mars City State Design Competition Announced

During the recent 2020 International Mars Society Convention, the first, second, third, fourth and fifth place winners of the Mars City State Design Competition were chosen following a highly competitive final round involving ten teams from around the world.

Announced in February by the Mars Society, the contest received a total of 175 team applications from over a dozen countries, requiring several down-select rounds to eventually reach the semi-finals and finals.

The top five winning teams (by name, points and country of origin) are:

1st Place – Nexus Aurora, 1583 points (Multi-National) [Video]
2nd Place – Southern Cross Innovations, 1560 points (Germany)
3rd Place – Navarro Rémy Foundation, 1546 points (France)
4th Place – Phlegra Prime, 1523 points (United States)
5th Place – Korolev Crater SAR, 1520 points (Australia)

As part of the final round, each team developed a video presentation detailing their proposal to be broadcast online during the convention for a panel of judges to review. These videos were used to supplement their 20-page written proposals and will be posted on the Mars Society’s YouTube page in the near future.
The five design team winners received awards in the amount of $10,000, $5,000, $2,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively.

The goal of the contest was to create the best plan for a Mars city state of 1,000,000 people, focusing on making a sizable human urban settlement on the Red Planet as self-supporting as possible and developing the city state’s economy, politics, society, culture and so forth.

All teams were required to incorporate as part of their urban planning the production of a wide variety of products, including food, clothing, electricity, consumer goods, machines and vehicles, to name a few, with only a minimum of key components, such as advanced electronics, needing to be imported from Earth.

“Our finalists did a wonderful job presenting the requirements for long-term human settlement of the planet Mars, taking many important factors into consideration. Their detailed efforts will help both the science community and the general public better understand what is needed to establish the first large city on the Red Planet in the not-too-distant future,” said Dr. Robert Zubrin, President of the Mars Society.

For those interested in learning more about the results of the Mars City State Design Competition, the top 20 team papers will be published as part of a new book, “Mars City States: New Societies for a New World,” due out in 2021.

From the 23nd Annual International Mars Society Convention, held as a Virtual Convention worldwide on the Internet from October 15-18, 2020. It was a historic and record event for the Mars Society with over 10,000 attendeees, 150 speakers, and over 100,000 viewers.

That attendee count is ** way ** up from early reports! Impressive!

Russian Confinement Experiments - Anna Yusupova - 23rd Annual International Mars Society Convention

I caught Ms. Yusupova's talk life, and am glad to see it packaged for people interested in Russian studies of human interactions in space simulations.

Anyone seriously thinking of packing hundreds of people into a confined space for months would (presumably) appreciate the work the Russians have done to try to measure how actual people respond to the conditions in which they found themselves.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

Received via email:

MDRS Patch/T-Shirt Design Winners Announced

The Mars Society announced the winners of its international dual design contest for creating a special logo for a patch and t-shirt to be used by crew members at the Utah-based Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), the largest and longest-running Mars analog program in the world.

The winner of the competition to create an official MDRS crew patch (1st graphic) is Ognian Ivanov of Bulgaria, while the winner of the contest to design a logo for an official MDRS crew t-shirt (2nd graphic) is Nelio Batista of Brazil.

“Choosing the two winners was very difficult given the many talented professional and amateur designers from around the world who participated. In the end, we were very thrilled with Ognian and Nelio’s work,” said MDRS Director Dr. Shannon Rupert.

Announced in June, the theme of both graphic design competitions was to create customized logos representing what MDRS truly stands for – advocating and preparing for human exploration and settlement of Mars.

As part of the winning design announcement, the Mars Society is pleased to make both the crew patch and t-shirt available to members and friends who contribute $100 (or more) to help support the MDRS analog program.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

Per schedule: November 1

Video 2 NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine - 23rd Annual

Anecdote about Dr. Zubrin bringing a case of books to Congressman Bridenstine's office at his request

The Q&A session included a question that elicited what "sounds like" an admission that the Gateway is a dangerous place for anyone to stay for an extended period.  It ** sounded ** as though Administrator Bridenstine is thinking about recasting the Gateway as a temporary capsule for servicing landers.  He made a point of the need for landers (and everything else) to be re-usable.  Later, in another response, he mentioned locating people ** under ** the surface of the Moon to mitigate radiation risks.

The overall impression I came away with is the importance of having a politically adept leader at NASA, who is ** also ** capable of understanding the various technologies NASA is working to create or to implement.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

I was able to use a cellphone to view the Elon musk Zubrin video and found it to be hard to watch not to mention not very good stage presence of Elon while being interviewed as he responded to questions. It was very much an off the cuff response and not well thought out answers. I did not get very deep into it before I stopped watching. Maybe I will try again with no video and just the sound later.

Thanks for breaking the ice for forum members taking advantage of the opportunity to "attend" the 2020 Mars Convention over time.

I'm hoping you can find a computer and high speed Internet connection for future viewing.

Thanks for your observations about the video, although trying to view it with a cell phone might have impacted the impression you reported.

This talk by Dr. Milkovich seems worth your time, and I'd be interested in your comments.  The rover is half way to Mars (as of the time of the presentation).  Light time is reported to be about two minutes (one way) which matches nicely with the four minute light time between Earth and Mars right now.

These videos are going to be on offer for over 200 days, and many of them  are likely to be worth your time.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

I was able to watch the presentation by NASA Administrator Bridenstine on the cellphone and he is a definite Zubric follower but he is also up against the tide of congress and presidents that just are not showing bipartisan teaming to get us to Mars by itself. Hence he needs to make use of going to the moon using a consensus approach to et a sustainable program going that can go to Mars with equipment and technology as developed to allow man to survive by in-situ materials use. Gaining the ability to master power source creation and lots more with the safety net of only being 3 days away from getting back home as proven by the Apollo 13 return.
So partners with Gateway, commercial moon landers and cargo supply train along with technology built for long term use means we will be ready for a trip to mars. Its that current fear of a failure along the way to or back from mars which is keeping man from going now. Not just the time spent on the surface which could also end a mars program.
Going to the moon is about getting scientific history that is stored on the moons surface to get a better picture of earths own history that has some what been shared but erased.
Its a bipartisanship of funding that remains the issue even if we do get started that must be sustained long after the next president takes office as well as the next and the next to come. Some how Nasa must drop the costs to make it a lot closer to sustainable if under funded of which the commercial programs must not be single source or it fails from lack of competition for the much needed services.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

SpaceNut,

NASA can do lunar missions using existing Falcon Heavy rockets.  The relative cost is so low that this is the only near-term viable option under any realistic funding scenario.  SLS and Orion have no place in that mission architecture.  They're anachronisms of a bygone era.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

For SpaceNut re #45

Thanks for making time to watch the Bridenstine video ... your comments about Bridenstine's appreciation of the Mars Society's founder caught my eye.

I'd like to think that the praise for Zubrin's work was sincere.  It sure sounded as though it were.  Bridenstine is a politician, but he is a rare breed who has the simple courtesy to say nice things about the host who has invited him to give a presentation.

For kbd512 ... The Senate Launch System has succeeded in preserving a work force capable of achievement at the highest level, but that work force seems to have been underutilized, compared (in particular) to SpaceX.

But then, NO space organization on Earth (that I know of) can stand comparison to SpaceX.  It would seem that leadership makes a difference.

Robert Zubrin - Opening Remarks - 23rd Annual International Mars Society Convention

This session could be attended in audio only mode, for those who are using cell phones.

Edit#1: Midway through the presentation, Dr. Zubrin supports use of a space elevator from Phobos.  He stated that the delta v needed for a vehicle meeting the tip of the elevator would be 1/10 of that needed to reach orbit without the elevator.

Note: 600 meters per second estimated speed of the tip of the elevator with respect to the surface of Mars.

Re: 2020 Mars Society Convention

The fossil search for perseverance is by and far to slow but we will be using it to claim that its safe to send men to mars as we will not get infected by life it may still hold as we will not have found any with these machines.

Did not make it through all of zubrin introduction prelude to Elon Musk coming on the following day but will continue it later tomorrow.

As we mentioned and questioned in other topics, why are we waiting to go to the moon or mars when we can do so with a smaller crew to lay the ground work with components that are already in existence?
