Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Even if it doesn't become a global pandemic (unlikely, at this point), shutting down China for a month or two will have major knock on effects on the world economy.

South Korea and Japan are where China was a month ago. If they shut down too...

Current figures (confirmed): infected 76,775; dead 2,24;, recovered 18,831.

But those are official figures, mostly from China. Take them with a grain of salt.

Nearly all viral infections take a toll on your immune system and that can allow bacterial infections (which are everywhere) to proliferate within you as an organism...which is why antibiotics are often used by the medical profession to treat illness (physiological weakness) caused by viral infections.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Expect this virus to become a pandemic because of the ease with which it spreads. Make sure you are in the best physical condition you can contrive to be, with a good diet and a bit of exercise. This way you will be able to deal with the viral assault. Be thankful it doesn't look nearly as dangerous as the Spanish flu pandemic, let alone Yersinia!

The infected rate is still rising and yes in the US too. What is more surprising is that at mimimum 1 has had no contact with others and did not travel and yet that person somehow has come down with this virus.

They'll have caught it from someone with a mild or asymptomatic case.

It's not just the virus itself that should concern us - there will be disruption to supply chains pretty soon. I just hope the fertiliser plants don't get affected. We don't need famine riding the coattails of pestilence.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

I think the 15 million dead is v. unlikely but the $2.4 trillion hit to the world economy might be an underestimate. This is a very costly virus in terms of reducing consumer demand, especially for services which constitute about 70% plus of modern economies.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

15 million is only 0.2% of the world's population, Louis. It's not a large number when we're talking about a disease with an estimated case fatality rate (cfr) of 3.4%. A cfr that is only achievable if some measure of healthcare is available, so it will go up if they're overwhelmed.

Economically, the disruption comes from trying to delay the outbreak, not from the deaths which overwhelmingly occur in economically inactive populations (the elderly).

Even if this pandemic ends with warmer, humid weather, it's out there now. That just gives us an extra six months to prepare for the fall pandemic (see 1918 influenza).

But what are the close quarter rate of death as on the cruise ships and nursing homes, churches ect
The stay at home only works if you are single as that would allow for a case rise in family that do not cover all of the bases for prevention.
Three states (Washington, Florida, and California) across the U.S. have declared a state of emergency as cases of coronavirus continue to climb..in the last 7 - 10 days the US count has doubled and now is over 500 conferred infected across a big part of the country coast to coast.
The stricken Grand Princess cruise ship is headed to the Port of Oakland Monday, having received permission from Gov. Gavin Newsom to dock.  21 people on board who tested positive for coronavirus.

updated numbers for the infected

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

I said I thought the economic impact was being underestimated, so I fully accept that it will have terrible consequences from that point of view. But deaths? Current deaths in China are just over 3000 and the death rate now seems to be subsiding.  China's population is about one fifth of the world's...so that would translate to 15,000 not 15 million!  Of course China's total may yet increase substantially but even so, I can't see us getting anywhere close to the 15 million deaths worldwide.

The problem with the virus appears to be the impact on health services (overwhelming hospitals and so interfering with all the other health care priorities) and disruption to supply chains owing to work absences and shutdowns.

Then sneeze and shake hands....

Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Paul Gosar on Sunday said they would self-quarantine after interacting with a person at a conservative conference who has tested positive for the coronavirus — making the pair the first known members of Congress to have possibly come into contact with the rapidly spreading virus. On Sunday, the virus continued its deadly reach across the U.S. as the number of fatalities climbed to 21, with 537 confirmed cases across 34 states and the District of Columbia.

Yet the name of the person remains a secret. So much for contact tracing.

There's been a lot of panic buying here. Pasta and toilet roll. With Italy shut down, there won't be any more pasta coming for a while.

People who haven't stocked up are going to need deliveries when isolating at home. Our government wants the supermarkets to do that, presumably including the ones that don't already offer that service, and using drivers who will be under home quarantine. They are clueless.

There is also a bit of conflicting information as to whom it is attacking for age and for what type of chronic illness that might have as the media is indicating those over 60 are the people most effected by the virus. That healthy people get sick and then better after weeks with the nasty bug.
The big push for most stores has been for hand sanitizer, antibiotic hand wash soaps, disinfecting wipes or towellets of which demand is keep store shelves nearly empty.

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

There's a lot of conflicting info!  I am particularly annoyed when they give death rates against known cases. Of course the number of unknown cases is the key here, as a senior epidemiologist remarked here today - the death rate goes down the more you test and discover cases.

But what I also find strange is that we are supposed to have no immunity to this disease and yet the number of confirmed cases remains incredibly low. In China out of about 1200 million people there are only about 90,000 confirmed cases or 0.0075% of the population. How can the figure be so low when the disease is so infectious and none of us has any immunity to it? That makes no sense. Something doesn't add up. A senior epidemiologist suggested that 60% of the world population might contract the virus... 60% v 0.0075%...how to explain that discrepancy?

Re: 2019 NCOV a.k.a. Wuhan's Diseases

Sometimes the news is ahead on the twitter and facebook while other times its just false in what it is saying. The same holds true of the news media outlets. So take everything with a large grain of salt.
Remember that you can make numbers say anything but its the question that needs to go with them that is left out...

We sort of know what to do for the flu virus but we still do not follow the rules by all. We do not cough into our sleeves, cover our mouths, cover our sneeze or face away from others, many still do not wash there hands and do not do it often enough. This include cleaning and washing often touched surfaces such as a work place desk, door knobs, floors, bathrooms....

These are all risk reducers for spreading and catching the virus in the first place even when there is no broad testing or vacine.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/home … li=BBnbcA0

hydrogen peroxide is water with an extra oxygen atom—hence the chemical distinction H₂O₂. While no longer recommended as a wound disinfectant (because it slows healing time), hydrogen peroxide has potent antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and bleaching properties.

Other such items that work such as vinegar which can be a universal cleaner for mold and mildew, Bleach can come in handy when you really want to disinfect or clean something.

Of course a strong immune system is what we all want but that is not the case.
http://www.msn.com/en-us/health/wellnes … li=BBnba9O
Most of this is risk reducing and keeping healthy.

Right now, more than 109,000 people around the world have contracted the novel coronavirus, and more than 3,800 have died
