For SpaceNut, and other members of the Forum, and readers far into the future ...
This post is offered as an appreciation of Void, who joined the forum 2011-12-29.
His first post is for 20120-01-27, in the Venus topic:
Hi,
I would like to suggest that a first step to modification of Venus would be to establish a civilization on Mercury.
I don't expect that there can be any notion of making Mercury Earth like, but it already is somewhat Moon like.
Whatever capabilities it takes to make a living on the Moon, are likely to be adaptable to Mercury.
And Mercury it seems likely has many metallic resources. It is also speculated that it has Volatile substances at the poles, and perhaps even vents that exhaust gasses.
Note: I have allowed the FluxBB spellchecker to make adjustments to spelling in the quote above. Interested readers can see the original post, and I hope, many others of the 2900+ in his body of work.

I am done.
Throughout his time active in the forum, Void has created a tapestry of imaginative visions, and woven surprising ideas into his narrative.
At times, I confess that some of his writing has been difficult for me to follow, but those few occasions have been rare. The writings have been devoted almost entirely to the Solar System, and facts and references are pulled from many sources to add value.
I would like to offer thanks to void for his contribution over more than eight years, and wish him good health.

I remember many that have come and gone over the years as do a few others which are still here from the early years. Some are still lurking logged into Newmars and some not but thats ok. They are always invited back if they should they choose to do so. You to Void Member 3,011 2011-12-29

Void often finishes a post or a successions of posts with "I am done"! It's one of this trade marks!! I hope he will be back as he often has interesting things to say.

For SpaceNut re List of Contributors ...
Thanks for adding these names to this topic!
It flickered through my mind to try to read some of the series you've listed. I've done that in the past on other forums, when a particular person showed exceptional understanding of the focus of the particular forum.
What I'd like to do instead is to invite nominations by current contributors for names to read from start to finish.
You've been gradually restoring contributions by members whose work was caught up in the "great crash", and (I am guessing) some of their content would stand the test of time.
This topic would be perfect for such nominations.
Edit ... Another way that current contributors could help to remember past contributors (or current ones for that matter) would be by suggesting "Best of" posts by individuals. I am remembering (for example) Louis, RobertDyck, kbd512, GW Johnson, JoshNH4H and (of course) Void.
Not every post by a contributor is memorable, but EACH of those listed above has left permanent traces in my memory, from individual posts or a series.
SpaceNut, you're in a class by yourself, so it would be difficult for anyone to highlight a particular post, but if someone feels up to it, I'd welcome suggestions.

TA,
See my post above about Void's frequent use of "I'm done" !
Regarding revisiting posts...to save you some time, I think I could summarise a few developments:
1. Lots of us were thinking "small" in the past re a Mars mission but most people now accept that Musk's vision of a big mission is both doable and makes sense. Previously, when people were running off NASA estimates of dollars-per-kg to Mars the Musk strategy seemed absurd. Gradually, over time, we have all come to accept that Musk has basically got it right with recoverable rocketry which enables you to send a huge tonnage to Mars to get human settlement going and also produce the propellant and fuel to get you back home.
2. The various threats to human health from zero gravity and radiation etc now seem much less threatening. For instance, we are now hearing hardly anything about the threat to muscle and bone because that has basically been solved.
3. The "Moon First" argument seems much less persuasive now in the sense of being necessary - though people can obviously still argue that a lunar focus is better than a Mars focus for various reasons.
4. People seem less resistant to the idea that Mars colonisation might be a financial success.

It will take a bit to add in linking to the many names but it could be done such that when you select the individuals name you would see just there posts from newest into the past.
I have fond memories of the front page round ups of a topic as well.
Some can be seen on the wayback machine...

On the Forums
The need for a Moon Direct is one of the week's most active threads in the Human Mission section.
In Planetary Transportation, the hot thread of the week is Running on compressed air? The title says it all really, the thread started off discussing the use of compressed air to power rovers on the Martian surface. In a close second to this thread is Simple Mars vehicle.
The write up is gone from 2004 but the topic lives on

You (of course) know that it is possible to use the FluxBB software to retrieve all the messages for an individual member, but since there are new members arriving (or at least registering) all the time, I thought it would be appropriate to explain the process:
Use the User List option in the main menu bar of New Mars Forums.
Enter the name of the member you are interested in, and Submit.
The name you have requested will appear in the results list. Click on the name, which should be highlighted in Red font.
Then choose to see posts by this person, or topics in which posts appear.
To read the oldest post, select the last page of the collection, and Ctrl-End to get to the bottom.
If there is a way to change the presentation order, I'd appreciate someone adding that detail.

I have been reminded that some of our past contributors are up there in age and that they are sadly missed for there thoughts on the advocacy of going to Mars and of their space interests in general. We do hope that their health is still with them. I hope that some still lurk the forums and that they once more will post and give aid to our many topics here on the NewMars Forums.

I've been on Newmars forum since around 1995/1996. The original site was on an older forum platform and we all had to re-register when we moved onto whatever forum version they replaced it with.
