Re: Chat

Sorry to hear that you have lost a friend in your cat, as they are much like little children....

Hopefully it will go off without a hitch this time....

Re: Chat

Robert, thanks for telling us about the loss of your cat.  I just lost mine on October 3rd, after 15 years.  You appear to be young enough to be up for bringing another cat (or two) into your life.  I like dogs and cats, but have hosted cats because they can patiently manage my occasional absences from home.
Please let us know if you do decide to investigate potential new feline companion(s).
Edited 2018/10/18 to remove text that was misunderstood.
Put it down to a learning experience.
I live 1000+ miles away from the location of concern.
Thanks for feedback from Robert and from SpaceNut.

Re: Chat

You're implying that you're in the same city as I? Then I should post when I'm out of town, away from the house.

Re: Chat

Yet another SNAFU!

Checked-in at airport in South Indian Lake for return home. They didn't give me a boarding pass, like all these tiny northern communities. So when I got back to Thompson for the connecting flight, walked straight from the arrival gate to check-in. They said connecting flight is with the other airline, so leaned over to the counter beside. Then they said boarding is already closed. WTF! This is a connecting flight! Separate check-in is not supposed to be required! And they expect me to check in while the first flight is still up on the air? I was the first.off the plane. And I'm not the only one they did this to. A pair of paramedics weren't allowed on.

Wait on standby for the 7:00pm flight. If I don't get on, it's another overnight in Thompson. The paramedics suggested meeting them in their hotel bar to get drunk.

Re: Chat

Another flight. Crowded Dash 8-300 this time. All but 4 rows of seats on the left side have cargo bags filled to the top of the seat. To Oxford House, connecting to God's River, then on to God's Lake Narrows. PC replacement with dual hard drive swap. Hope it goes smoothly so don't have to re-image. Early morning out, late evening back, so I don't have to stay overnight this time, if all goes to plan.

Re: Chat

Robert:

My condolences about your cat.  I know how you feel.

I found an orphaned litter of 4 feral kittens 2-3 weeks old 15 years ago.  One died 4 years ago of unknown cardio-pulmonary disease,  one died earlier this year of untreatable blood cancer,  and one is dying right now of cancer tumors that are not operable.  The remaining one has thyroid disease.  After 15 years,  one gets very close to such critters,  much like other children we never had. We've had other critters out here on the farm,  and I felt that loss with all of them.

All rows on the right were available for passengers. Dash 8 is the largest this airline flies.

Mostly went well. Flights delayed, got home 3 hours late. Left home 7:00am, returned 11:39pm. Long day for 1 1/2 hour of actual work.

Re: Chat

Off to Paunigassi first Nation today. Check-in tells me it's a float plane this time. Return flight has a time to meet the plane at the dock, no airport. Departing from the same airport and Sam e airline that operated the Cessna Grand Caravan. It'll be interesting to see why it is today.

Like most northern communities, no cell service but the Northern Store where the post office is located does have a landline. The airline is familiar with it, asked where I'm going in case they have to inform me of a change.

It's a Cessna 208.

Reminds me of the planes landing in lake Winnipesaukee near Alton Bay but then again I have seen them fly in and land on the ice as well....
Fingers crossed that all goes well

Re: Chat

Home early. In St Andrews airport, outside Winnipeg. Was scheduled to stay overnight, return home tomorrow afternoon. Return flight was the same plane, configured for cargo. So I flew in the copilot seat.

Re: Chat

Flight today on Dash 8, the bigger turboprop aircraft. They check-in clerk insisted I check my backpack this time. They again had cargo bags over seats on the left side. In the small terminal building at Oxford House, saw them carry my bag off. It was in one of those seats. How is checking my bag different than carry-on when it's in a seat anyway? Waiting for luggage to be brought to pickup area.

Re: Chat

Video archive of 1966 blizzard. This was Winnipeg, the only day below -40° since 1879. A couple days before the blizzard it was -45°C (-49°F) real temperature, not windchill. It was "only" -40° the day of the blizzard. Snow wasn't fluffy, it was solid, you could walk onto your house roof.
winnipeg-blizzard-of-1966.png

This New Year's Eve was my niece's wedding social, and her birthday. People outside Winnipeg have no idea what a "social" is. Turns out it's a strong Ukrainian tradition that everyone in Winnipeg has embraced, and most people don't even know where it comes from. A fundraiser for the wedding. A dance with a DJ. Sell tickets to get in. Booze is a little cheaper than at a bar, but the social still makes a profit. They sell tickets for a 50/50 raffle. Sell tickets for "silent auction". But this one was half hour walk from the nearest bus stop. My car doesn't work right now, but even if it did, it's New Year's Eve! Why would you drive to a New Year's party? It was -27°C, 75% humidity, 13km/h wind, feels like -37°C. Not as bad as some years, but cold.

Re: Chat

Amazing weather today! Feels like spring. Starting 6am it was +1°C, rising to +3°C at 2pm, didn't drop below freezing until 8pm. Snow melting everywhere.

Re: Chat

Not so fun here as I woke to having about 2 inches of fluffy snow but the temperatures did warm up to melting most of it and is back to freezing as well.

Re: Chat

Was -28°C Friday, but only -16°C today. Flying back to Garden Hill, Manitoba for work. Weather website says it's -21°C there.

This town was featured on CBC News a couple weeks ago. They have an issue with water. My third trip there, dealing with the high speed internet modem again.

Probably not. I'm called whenever equipment fails: computer, monitor, scale, signature capture device, debit/credit card machine. Canada Post uses cell phone modems. If cell service isn't available, the local store franchise can provide high speed internet at their cost, or use dial-up. You'd be surprised how many franchises refuse to pay, put up with dial-up while demanding the other guy pay. Some have satellite internet, but not many. If Starlink does happen, bureaucracy will be slow to use it. If/when they do, I'll be the guy to install.
