Not forgotten as it can and does have the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb).

Sure Boeing or lockheed to do this and may just well do so to keep market in what they have had all along but it will need new rockets to be able to compete.

Thou the question is do they even want to compete...

They want to get their scrapings from the pork barrel. That's all. They don't want to get to Mars. Musk does.

They learned that they need not pay for the R&D costs or the steady state production when some one else will pay them for it.
