Hey All,
I noticed today that I registered for the newmars forums on 7/15/2007--Over ten years ago!
Here's to ten years of learning, understanding, arguments, updates, and advancements on this forum!
Hope we're all still on here in ten more!

Many happy returns! In another 10 years, this might not be a theoretical exercise!

Indeed! I think there's a good chance that within the next ten years there will be humans on Mars. I think this Forum has at least helped in a tiny way to address in the round all aspects of Mars colonisation.

Unfortunately, it isn't likely to be me that walks on Mars. I fear I am too old for that.

Anyone aged 30 or under should be in with a chance, especially if they have good technical, scientific or managerial qualifications and are athletically fit and agile (bulking up at the gym probably not a good idea).

Society conference on mars and defining city numbers:
Metropolis – a large city and its suburbs consisting of multiple cities and towns. The population is usually one to three million.
Large city – a city with a large population and many services. The population is <1 million people but over 300,000 people.
City – a city would have abundant services, but not as many as a large city. The population of a city is between 100,000 and 300,000 people.
Large town – a large town has a population of 20,000 to 100,000.
Town – a town has a population of 1,000 to 20,000.
Village – a village is a human settlement or community that is larger than a hamlet but, smaller than a town. A village generally does not have many services, most likely a church or only a small shop or post office. The population of a village varies however, the average population can range from hundreds to thousands.
Hamlet – a hamlet has a tiny population (<100) and very few (if any) services, and few buildings
Seems like Town is the winner for that time frame but even still the who, what age will be the marsanuat that will be the population that is the question as its the cost that still must be saved before you can as a paying customer plan to go that is the issue.

Mid/late 2030 is still the earliest window for landing feet on Mars. Money is on 2040-2046 at this point.
Anything approaching permanence is post 2100. Bio-sciences need to address the health issues as any precursor, and without further investment, only limited duration exploration is in the cards.

I think Space X will get humans there by 2026.
Once we are there, watch all those much-touted health concerns melt away. The expansion rate will be phenomenal.
