Re: Amateur Radio!

Actually, Wikipedia is smaller than I thought. I couldn't get any data on the actual size the articles take up, but the article on the size of Wikipedia claims that, if all the articles were put into book form, there'd be 1954 volumes of 8 million characters each, which works out to under 16 terabytes using ASCII encoding. Most of those, of course, won't be regularly accessed except by people going on wikiwalks, but even so...

Last time I looked, 1 terabyte of hard disk storage cost $30. So, for under a thousand dollars, you could afford to cache wikipedia locally. Well, not counting images. But if you can persuade people that you're just as important as a library, they should be willing to cough up enough to afford a copy of the global commons... but the purpose of caching is to reduce the load on the relays/super-routers (okay, I'm using the term relay for them), making it much quicker for everyone to access. Stuff on the local net should be pretty quick to get.

Re: Amateur Radio!

Fascinating! But do you actually have the equipment for it?
I think you should try to involve somebody who really understands ham radio. They are super helpful. High average age, I think.

Btw, the technology exists - the US military has devised a system like that, with the purpose of deploying it when they are trying to overthrow local governments - it's a local alternative to the internet and can't be shut down by normal measures. To allow potential coupmakers to communicate locally even if there is censorship and the internet is turned off. All they need is a  very small radio mast and access to the software. So if the US wants to encourage a coup d'etat somewhere they might distribute this system for free.

Can't recall where I read about it or what it was called. But it's got to be the same technology - using radiowaves for computer communication.

Re: Amateur Radio!

We have WiFi all over North America. Isn't that technology available everywhere? It's relatively short range, requires repeaters, but readily available.

Re: Amateur Radio!

Wikipedia (the English language version) is only 10GB in size, so a local cache would be trivial to maintain.

Developing a cache based, P2P internet would be useful for space colonisation.

I have in mind starting with WiFi mesh nets, then connecting them with Ham radio - ideally microwave Hams, because of the high bandwidth available, but if information is passed between the caches during the night, it might be possible to manage with much less...
