Re: NEW MARS RULES

I'm pretty sure that is not the whole of what religious texts have to say on the matter.  In any case I don't see what relevance my sexual orientation has to anything we have been discussing, here or in any other thread, or to my old username (which incidentally was chosen a very long time ago, solely because I was at the time quite hyperactive).

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Ban that guy. Seriously, he's nothing but trouble with his off-topic judgemental shit.

... If he's not posting alien nonsense.

Stinks like a badly disguised troll.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Seeing as I'm somewhat involved in the matter, I dont want to speak on it either way.  If there were any topic in which I valued Cyberenforcer's input I would probably be offended by that post, but the reality being what it is, I don't care all that much.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

On the old boards, at least, I'm pretty sure one would only see the report if he or she were actually looking at the post.

Speaking of the old boards, it would be fantastic if the pm function could be ressurected.  It was quite useful and sending someone an email is not the same.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Just wanted to post a note that we'd like to hear from any interested forum members on how to improve these forums.  You can reply to this thread or send me a private email to 'webmaster@marssociety.org'.  That will open a ticket using our new ticketing system so somebody will be sure to get back to you on your suggestion.

Thanks,
-James

Re: NEW MARS RULES

it might come in handy to have some people with basic mod powers (say deleting or even temporarily deleting) posts hailing from different timezones. That way spam does not stay up long.

I used to comb through new posts prior to work (I always arrive more than half an hour early, so no big deal)

Other people in different timezones did the same, so we had an 24hrs/day sentry thing going smile

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Thats a great suggestion.  As an aside, the crew & mission support at MDRS (mars desert research station) are looking at using these forums to do their routine work.  So we might be able to tap into them to assist with moderation.  They are very good at doing the 24/7 sentry thing smile

Private messaging is a useful tool for resolving disputes. Those are fortunately scarce here, but did happen at least once since the partial recovery.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Recently, Nasa reported on a news article that Mars has boron the element. In what manner can a poster  post this information on this website? For example, put it under sticky of Mars terraforming FAQs because we now know Mars has boron?

Re: NEW MARS RULES

If I recall correctly Boron is used to dope the semiconductor materials in making solar cells.
At least post it under the MSL topics as we can always break it out later....

Re: NEW MARS RULES

I see users posting photos all the time.  How does one go about doing that?  Copy and paste certainly does not seem to work.  At least not for me.

Below "Quick reply" you will see a box where you can type text. Below that you will see a row of links:
BBCode: on  [ url ] tag: on [ img ] tag: on Smiles: on

Click the link for "BBCode". It will open a help page, and take you to the section for BBCode. It describes tags for "Bulletin Board Code".

You will notice I put a space after the brackets instead of the tag tight with the brackets. That's so you can see it. If I wrote it tight, then it would be processed. Each tag has an opening (beginning) and closing (end). The closing tag is the same name as the opening tag, exept the closing tag has a forwards slash. For example:
[ b ] this sentence is bold [ /b ] - You can see the tags because I added spaces between the brackets and the "b".
this sentence is bold - You cannot see the tags, instead the tags are processed. It actually makes the sentence bold. The only difference is no spaces.

To include a picture, that picture must be on a different website somewhere. You need a web address of that picture. The technical name is "Universal Resource Locator" or "URL". To include a picture use the tag "img" which stands for "image". Again use the opening and closing tags. Between the tags put the "URL" of the image. Below is the same line twice, once with spaces so you can see  it, the second time without so it will be processed.

[ img ] http://solarviews.org/images/marssystem.jpg [ /img ]
marssystem.jpg

To get the URL of an image, you can right-click on the image of a web page. That should give you a pull-down menu with many options. One option is "Copy Image Location". That will copy the URL on the "clipboard" of your computer. Then you can go to NewMars and press "Ctrl-V" on the keyboard to paste from the clipboard into your message. Or right-click to open another pull-down menu, then left-click the option "Paste". However, some websites don't want you to use their images. They have a couple ways they can use to prevent you from doing this. Luckily, most don't bother.

Note: the image is actually stored on the original website. For example this image of Mars and its moons is on the website "Solar Views". That website has to continue to provide that image to the internet. If that website removes that image, then it won't be available on the NewMars forum either. That's because NewMars only stores the URL, in other words the location to find the image. It doesn't store the image itself. That means NewMars doesn't have to waste space on the hard drive of the server that runs NewMars, however, posts on NewMars are dependent on the original website continuing to provide those images.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

In internet explorer the right button on the mouse when clicked over the image will allow you to select properties at the bottom of the pop up commands. Select the properties willopen a dialog box where the image url will appear as well to be able to highlight and copy with several methods.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

What you describe with the [ img ] and [ /img ] stuff TOTALLY failed to work!  It said I cannot put an image URL inside that command!!!!  That includes leaving out the spaces,  just as described above.  I right-clicked on it and copied the image address,  and put it right between the the [ img ] and [ /img ] commands just like you said,  but without the spaces inside the brackets.

I'm too old to learn computer geek stuff,  obviously.  My slide rule NEVER,  EVER gave me excuses why it couldn't do something!  I'm very tempted to ditch every piece of electronics I have,  and just go back to my slide rule.

The image I wanted to post is a funny thing I put up onto my "exrocketman" site,  today (3-23-17) as an item titled "Water on Mars?"

If you copy and paste that, you should get this:

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Not all image types display as some are protected via the url side of the coin while others are open to the public for copying. Digital Image File Types JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG, BMP are the most popular but there are many more and I am not sure if its your browser type as firefox some version do have some issues that may be causing the problem or that the image is a protected type or that the file extension is one that is not supported.
Here is a more complete version of the BBcode https://www.bbcode.org/reference.php
If you paste the url for the image in to the post you want to make, I can go in later when I see it and see if I can fix it as another option....

Re: NEW MARS RULES

The file extension also needs to be with in the adress of the url as well or it will not know how to display it.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

I finally got it to work.  Did exactly what I thought I did a couple of days ago,  which failed utterly then.

Only difference was I verified it copied the address correctly before I deleted the spaces in the "img" and "/img" commands.

Anyhow,  finally,  my first.  In the "water on Mars" set of threads.
