Peter suggested in another thread that we should create a civ-culture forum here, similar to the civ-culture mailing list. I think this is a pretty good idea, although I'd like to see if there would be much interest in such a forum. Also, does anyone have suggestions for a more accurate and perhaps attractive name for the forum, which would discuss sociological and cultural issues of a Mars colony/mission?
Another possible forum could focus on general science issues which aren't necessarily Mars related; e.g. genetics, physics, computing, etc.

I like the idea of a civ-culture forum here. We don't really have a place dedicated to discussing what kind of art and culture could develop on Mars independent of politics. As for names, you got me, Martian Culture, Martian Civilization, um, dunno, I think I'll leave the naming part to somebody else.
To achieve the impossible you must attempt the absurd

This civ-culture mailing list sounds cool. I've never heard of it before.

As I mentioned in the other thread, my interests here range from crew dynamics during preliminary exploratory missions to the emergence of a distinctly "Martian" culture upon colonization. Basically any anthropological, social, or cultural concerns would find a home in the forum I suggested.

A new 'Civilization and Culture' forum has been created in the Dorsa Brevia section. I'm also considering creating a general 'Science and Technology' forum in Underhill. I live to serve...

Now that the Civ-culture forum is up and running well, I've added a new general science and technology forum. I think people here will have a good interest in this sort of thing and there's a possibility for some productive discussion.

I am seriously considering creating a forum for posts about intelligent alien life on Mars. This is not because I believe in it, or because I think that the discussion is particularly useful. It's because I think it'd be useful to put it all in one place instead of cluttering up other forums. Stuff about Cydonia doesn't really belong in Life on Mars (which refers to microbial life) or Water on Mars.
As I have mentioned above, I don't find discussion of Cydonia-like topics to be useful. It all boils down to unproveable NASA conspiracy theories that are only taken seriously by a very small minority, and I don't think there's anything useful that people on either side can say now. I certainly don't think we're going to see anyone convinced that the other point of view is correct.
New Mars is the official online magazine of the Mars Society, and it hosts the official forums. I know that the Mars Society disapproves of Cydonia-like speculation, and that papers submitted to the convention on those topics will be flatly refused. If these forums turn into a free-for-all about alien life on Mars, then the Mars Society administration will not be happy and bad things will happen. I don't want to stop people from discussing it though, so I think the best solution is to create a separate forum for this, with a pinned topic outlining the Mars Society's and New Mars' official position on it.
Comments?
Plus, I don't want to keep on adding forums forever. In fact, I think things are a bit cluttered as they are right now. Any suggestions for forums that could be merged or removed?

Adrian, I agree with you 100% with everything you said.
I'm not particularily fond of the Cydonia/NASA conspiracy/bridges on Venus/ad infintum...it's been a waste of my time reading all that ****. But speech and speculation shouldn't be limited, so yes, putting it all in a new forum would best for all of us, along with an explanation of New Mars' views on this...so it's clear to new visitors of what New Mars is all about.
As for merging some of the forum topics, I say it's a good idea...just don't know which ones to suggest..lol.
A final note, just want to give a big "Thanks" to Adrian for doing a fabulous job running this website...Keep up the great work!! Spreading the knowledge is the first step to getting humanity to Mars...

Done - I made the new forum. Threads that are clearly about intelligent alien life are being retroactively moved there whenever I see them (so I can't guarantee that they will all be moved straight away). If people make disruptive posts in the middle of threads about intelligent alien life, then they will be warned and further such posts will be deleted. If they get too annoying, they'll be banned - and no, this is not censorship.
If people want to talk about this sort of thing, they can do it in the appropriate forum. If they start disrupting existing threads, that's unacceptable. If you don't like this arrangement, then New Mars is not for you.
