Re: Is the Western World Sinking into Totalitarianism?

Police Scotland's creepy new hate crime ad.  Does this sound like the sort of thing you would expect to see in a free and democratic society?

British politicians like to criticise Russia as an authoritarian regime.  But in Russia you say anything you like, so long as you don't criticise the government.  In Britain, simply expressing an opinion that anyone decides is 'hateful' can get you into serious trouble.  In fact, if the police find evidence that you have an opinion, like keeping certain memorabilia in your home, you can be jailed for 'possessing material that could be considered hateful'.  And you are watched and monitored to an extent that goes far beyond anything the Russians ever do.  The UK is one of the most oppressive places on Earth.

A lot of people feel that it somehow doesn't effect them.  Because Britain is still relatively wealthy and doesn't have Soviet levels of poverty, people find it easier to ignore the complete loss of political freedom that they have suffered.  If they are simple people without strong opinions, they get to believe that loss of freedom is someone else's problem.  Loss of freedom is never a problem for people until it is.  But there are people in Britain that have been jailed for speaking up against immigration or trans issues on facebook.  A few weeks back, a man was jailed for two years for distributing anti-immigration and anti-government stickers.  This sort of thing really does happen in the UK.  We are rapidly closing on the likes of China and North Korea in our ability to oppress the hell out of people.  The only difference is that we don't (yet) have comparable material poverty.  But even that slim margin is rapidly erroding.
