Calliban appears to be working on a promising path toward using simple CO2 from Mars atmosphere, in the Internal Combustion Engine topic.

However, nuclear reactor heating of CO2 is NOT "internal combustion"

Please consider where you'd prefer Calliban's new inititive might fit....

I'd like to see if there might be a way to focus on piston vs turbine internal combustion engine designs, separately.

At the moment, we have piston and turbine engine concepts interwoven in the Internal Combustion Engine topic.

Update at 8:05 local time ... For SpaceNut ... we seem to have found another failure mode....

A topic is showing up with my ID as the author. I stopped the run in order to investigate.

Hopefully the original posts are intact, and the spurious new posts can be deleted.

Update at 9:29 local time ... the problem was post 46507 ... it has been corrected and is back in place.

The posts created in error have been edited to show they were created in error.

I'll complete adjustments for the remaining posts processed before the halt, and then resume the run at 46560.

Update at 13:32 local time...

The Trailbreaker run to 46800 finished with three sessions.

The show stopper was 46507, which had a count of 19270 characters.

The previous show stopper was (if I recall correctly) over 20,000 characters.

It is simple enough to change the program to NOT attempt an update if a post is more than 10,000 characters.

After finishing the manual post repair today, I'll begin to make the necessary changes.

We are just over half way through the 77,000 posts to be visited, and there will (no doubt) be more long posts, so a simple skip when they occur will save them for a manual update, which proceeds without incident.

It seems clear the failures are occurring due to the use of the serial line, and possibly the use of third party software, which may be getting bogged down when it is given too much work at a time.

There are lots of SpaceNut posts, which (of course) are already fixed. i have just 9 to attend to.

Update at 14:46 local time .... edits are completed and it is time to run Inspector.

The WBA program is queued up for an update to skip posts that exceed a size, such as 10,000 characters.

I'll make the number adjustable by reading it from the screen at start up time.

The underlying problem is that ** something ** is causing the browser to ** think ** that submit occurred before the actual end of data flow. This might occur (pure speculation) if data is being batched up and the end of the data is processed before earlier packets are received.

If this is the case, I would suspect the third party software is the place to look. However, in the short term, just limiting the size of posts should catch the problem before it occurs.

Work is progressing on adding a new Script command: CheckSendSize:nnnnn

The foundation steps are completed.
A procedure for the next work session is documented.
The next work session should see the new command ready for testing.
When implemented, the operator can pass a size in as a parameter, or over-ride it with a screen input.
The screen input will be taken as the final word at run time.

The need for this new command arises from a failure that occurs when a post is large, and the browser receives a Submit command even though the text is not yet delivered to the browser Edit screen. When this occurs, and text continues to arrive to the browser, the observed behavior is that FluxBB creates a new post and deposits the additional text there.

Update at 13:24 local time ... thanks to Mars_B4_Moon, the active list is now extending to two pages! Bravo!

There were several interesting FluxBB rejects.

Changes to WBA to provide a limit on post size are installed. Testing is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

The Inspector found a post to correct. That is a surprise, but not completely unexpected, because there were a ** lot ** of edits to do today, and I obviously missed one.

The laptop has earned a rest.

The re-Scan over 39001-40000 will start (about) 22:00 local time.

Update at 20:41 ... a first test of the new CheckSendSize:nnnn script command was mystifying.

Testing without an Internet connection can only go so far. I tested offline, and then tested online.

The script progressed normally until it hit the new command. At that point, the program stopped advancing.

It was running in the sense that it was not halted and not obviously failing.

CPU usage was minimal, so no loop had occurred. The limit parameter was set to 10000, so the program should have continued processing as though the Check statement were not present.

I'll set up a debug session tomorrow.

In the mean time, I've commented out the new command, and will run the Inspector.

Update next day ... The Re-Scan through 40000 completed with no Edits and 46 potholes.

Thanks for the heads up! I've not trusted Facebook ever, and even less since relative's accounts were hacked.

And now even less (if that were possible)....

PS ... I noted your comment about the huge hydrogen powered truck ... That is the ideal solution for the long run.

You asked about energy cost, but Ma Nature provides everything for free.

From my perspective, there is more energy pouring out of the Sun than we will every hope to be able to harness.

Solutions that allow massive mining trucks to operate smoothly and reliably, that don't pollute the atmosphere in the process, are the way to go, and the Sun is happy to pour all the gigawatts you need, at no charge.

It's up to us humans to take advantage of all that generosity.

Yes the day hours of sun are free but the equipment are not for scale of application with storage to go hand in hand with the levels being generated and they do have limited life times requiring replacements that never go down in cost but up....

Update at 21:01 local time ... I ran another test of the new CheckSendSize script command.

It worked offline, but failed again in live mode.

I restored 46507, edited the bogus posts, and started today's rescan.

This is (or should be) a relatively simple feature to add to the program, but it is giving me a hard time.

The ** worst ** part of it is that failure is public. I can't delete the bogus posts, because some sort of artifacts put the buttons out of reach.

Update the next day: I was able to delete the bogus posts on another browswer.

The CheckSendSize script command appears to have been set up correctly, but it failed to work in the live test.

The Compare-Before-to-After command worked, and it caused Skip to Next, but it was too late.

Apparently the creation of false posts is happening WITHOUT a submit.

Something about the size of the posts is creating conditions in the browser that cause it to perform submit before the script calls for it.

The CheckSendSize is correctly placed ahead of the transfer script command.

It simply fails to work.

Special item for SpaceNut .... the drone fog/cloud water harvester concept got a boost today.

A report (from Google) on the ability of Redwood trees to capture fog water using "specialized" structures seems worth investigating. i'm hoping whatever those structures are, they can be built into a drone that will fly through fog/cloud. The idea would be to collect as much water as possible with as little drag as possible.

For SpaceNut special report... the new script command CheckSendSize appears to be working

46507 was put through the wringer and the script skipped the post as was needed.

The offline test had failed because the conditions of online were not duplicated sufficiently.

In the process, I changed the command to point to the location of the data to be tested.

That improved the accuracy of the behavior.

Thanks for noting introduction of the new Limit Send command.

The size of 10000 characters is pulled from a hat. It may need to be adjusted downward.

One possibility that I thought of recently, is that the 3rd party software may contain buffers of a fixed size, such as 8192 bytes.

If the problem we have seen is caused by the post exceeding such a buffer, then we may see it again if 10000 is too high.

Today's Inspector is running.

The North Houston chapter meeting was as interesting as I'd hoped it would be.

The speaker has been tracking off-the-books satellites (along with a cadre of similar investigators world wide).

The justification for looking for "secret" satellites seems understandable enough.... even "secret" satellites fall out of the sky at some point, and since the launching Nations choose to keep everything about them secret, the danger they pose to the public is unknown as well.

The publication of facts about hidden satellites seems (to me for sure) to be a worthy public service..

I'll resume the Inspector with 46377, when I queue up tonight's Rescan.

The sequence 46001-46376 contained Zero potholes and reported Zero Edits.

Today's ReScan will resume at 46377 and extend through 48000

Trailbreaker finished with a Green screen.

There were 36 SpaceNut posts, and (about) 15 edits to perform.

The actual count of edits was 11 ... there were two FluxBB rejects.

Inspector will now check the work.

Inspector reported no potholes (as expected) and no edits, which is good.

I'll now start (restart) the ReScan from yesterday, and include tonight's scan over 47001-48000.

The run will take at least 12 hours, assuming it finishes.

The run took 13 hours and finished with a Green screen!

The 25 include FluxBB rejects as well as the more common Smiley Faces and European Punctuation

As it turned out, the four potholes were what I thought were FluxBB rejects.

The work will be checked by Inspector...

*** For SpaceNut ... work on the Auditor is progressing at a snail's pace ... the challenge immediately at hand is to find all the posts in the initial collection of updates performed by early versions of WBA. Unfortunately, there is a lot of manual tweaking of the collected data needed.

For example, in an early version of WBA, the post processed in "Loop" mode (to be sure the program is set up correctly) did not record the post it was working on. That is a problem now, when I need to find those early posts to compare them to the posts in the NewMars database now.

Fortunately, there is no deadline for this work to be completed. The vast majority of the posts are readable and usable, and we don't have very many folks looking at the early years anyway (except for Mars_B4_Moon).

Still, I'll keep chipping away at the pile of work to be done.

Meanwhile, the current scripts seem to be performing well, and we are just about to reach 51,000 out of 77,000.

Special to SpaceNut .... it was an unexpected opportunity to write to Governor Newsom today! It is definitely NOT something that comes up often.

However, lightning ** does ** strike occasionally. I've written to our Arizona contact to alert him to the Utah inquiry.
