Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2100

Thanks for taking a look at the Census data just released for 1950.  I'll open this up to all ... if anyone figures out how to look up relatives who were alive in 1950, please let us know here.  I'd like to be able to see what numerous relatives entered into the forms, at a time period I remember well.

The Trailbreaker is aiming for 36600 today, and the run is under way.  The total amount of processing time estimated for today is 14 hours.

There are several potholes in that count.

update at 14:33 local time ... those were not potholes after all ... they were All FluxBB rejects!

Our unquote guy was back.  We had someone drop a closing quote, and we had a mis-typed italics specification.

I'm amazed that the original forum software accepted all those situations, but obviously it did.

I'll start the Inspector now ... based on no potholes, i'm expecting a clean report, but we'll see.

Update at 17:21 local time ... The Inspector finished with no skips and no deletes. Clean bill of health.

I'll give the laptop a rest, and start today's rescan at 9about) 22:00 local time.  That way, it will run overnight and be ready for review tomorrow morning.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post Repair initiative

Yesterday's Inspector run over 1001-2000 finished showing one pothole, and a surprise.

Post 1301 contained an image/url combination that FluxBB had rejected.  What is surprising is that this set of posts has been processed twice.  I'll fix 1301 before proceeding to today's Trailbreaker to 37200.

Update at 13:21 local time ... Today's Trailbreaker ended with a Red screen.

The halt occurred after Post #37166 completed without incident.

There were 9 Skips, and of those, two were NOT mismatch exceptions.

It appears I have either potholes, unquotes or more Smiley faces to deal with

OK ... no potholes ... this time there were unmatched quotes that FluxBB didn't like

I'll restart Trailbreaker at 37167 to see if it can get to the goal for today of 37200.

Trailbreaker finished this time with a Green screen and three more skips ...

I'll set Inspector to look at the same set of posts.  I'm expecting a clean run.  There were no potholes.

Update at 20:50 local time ... Inspector just finished ...

Tonight I'll launch today's Inspector to cover 2001-3000.
Tomorrow's Trailbreaker will try for 37500.

The Inspector run between 2001-3000 finished with a Green screen.

One pothole was reported, and no other problems were found.

Re: Housekeeping

Good to hear that the previous work was of high quality.

Speaking of holes I have been moving about 10 tons of sand from the end of the house which has to much to a location in the front lawn that has had a sinkhole forming due to underground water flow in the area using a wheel borrow and a short handled spade yesterday with a bit more to due before capping it with loam so I can have grass to mow.

For SpaceNut re Gigantic Pot Hole ... Thanks for telling me of this (to me remarkable) home project!

Best wishes for a permanent solution to that water flow problem!

I would imagine an underground drain line might be helpful, but (obviously) don't know the terrain.

Good run: One pothole as expected. No deletes so no corrections.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #2106

Thanks for working on the bandits!  You'll be busy trying to stay ahead of the Trailbreaker, but you do have a head start because we are still back in May of 2004, and you joined NewMars in July.

Last night's Inspector run to 4000 reported no potholes, but to my surprise, it found five posts that need attention.

I am surprised because all those posts have been visited twice by the Update procedure.

3351, 3479, 3561, 3906 and 3941

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 37800.

Forum note: Thanks primarily to Mars_B4_Moon, the forum Active list extended over two pages today! Impressive!

I was ** particularly ** happy to see Terraformer's contribution of an innovative experiment with inertial fusion!  The sphere idea is plausible, and vast sums are being expended to pursue it, but I see the hundreds of years of successful implementation of cylinders as explosion containers as a hint that they are worth pursuing.  What is ** also ** fun to see is that the research has been quietly going on in the UK.  It would be ** good ** to see the UK back on the global stage.

Update at 11:12 local time ... Trailbreaker just finished.

In parallel, i was looking at WBA, trying to understand why the Auditor script gave incorrect bogie counts.

it turned out I had missed a step at a point in the editing process.  The flow through that section of code was so rare that i missed it until Auditor made it painfully obvious.

A new version of WBA is ready to go in for today's Inspector run.

Completed Sequence for ID: 37800

Total time of Processing: 03:07:39

Gulp! 31 skips !!! That's over an hour of manual labor.

The ** big ** advantage of having skips to deal with is the (forced) opportunity to read the work of our members from long ago.  Back in those early days, there was more poetry (or what might called poetry) going on than has been the case in recent years.

To be honest, I'm glad ** that ** particular fad is part of the history of the forum, and not the present.

Initial analysis ... all 31 appear to be Smiley Faces and European Apostrophes

There were no potholes or unquotes

update at 13:37 after completing 31 manual updates ...

i found a new category of special characters! Exponents ... someone in today's series used them for an equation.

With the manual updates out of the way, I'll launch the Inspector to see if there were any missed items.

Update at 16:23 ... as hoped, Inspector found no problems with today's set of 300 posts.

Tonight's rescan to 5000 will start at about 22:00 local time and run for 7 hours.

For SpaceNut re #2109

Thanks for keeping an eye on progress!

Today's post starts out with a report on the long Inspector run from 5001-6000.  This is primarily intended to provide a current status of updated posts, but it ** does ** have the benefit of revealing any posts that were missed during the two earlier runs.

Completed Sequence for ID: 6000

Starting Sequence for ID: 5044
Starting Sequence for ID: 5072
Starting Sequence for ID: 5297
Starting Sequence for ID: 5429

While ** any ** missed posts are a surprise, the ** good ** news is there are only 4!
All four are cleared ... Today's Trailbreaker will try for 38400

Update at 15:07 local time... this morning's Trailbreaker hit so much Internet Turbulence I stopped it, cleared the congestion, and restarted the run.

Note FYI ... OF 1939 just posted an interest post about nutrition ... I searched topics with the word "nutrition" and found none.

I'm not sure nutrition deserves it's own topic, since there are plenty of topics about food, but thought I'd bring the lack to your attention.

Update at 16:49 locao time ...

The Trailbreaker reached 38400 with 27 skips ... there were no potholes

27 skips is a lot ...

Update after a break ... the 27 manual updates went quickly... they were completed in 35 minutes flat.

I ran across another example of poetry ... those were the days if poetic inspiration, apparently.

The Inspector should give this set of 300 a clean review, but we'll see ... starting now ...

Re: Housekeeping

A topic that has nutrition in its title is as you noted not needed as its about the diet of what you eat and for mars its a vegan diet after a short period of time. So we are going to need to learn about meat flavorings to give us that familiar taste that we will crave.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... a person preparing food for a family, or for a company, needs to understand nutrition.

The knowledge possessed by an average person seems (to me at least) to be unlikely to insure good health.

OF 1939 has offered a snippet of knowledge.

If you were going to hire a chef to supervise meals for a Large Ship, would you hire an average person, or would you hire someone who had demonstrated mastery of the subject of nutrition for humans, and perhaps for plants and animals as well.

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 38700...

Reports for 38700 will be delayed ... the run completed, but time was not available to manually update 24 posts.

Due to not keeping track of the date, the Inspector run to 6000 was performed twice.  No harm was done, but time was lost.

The Inspector run to 7000 was completed subsequently.  Four edits are needed.

The Inspector run to 8000 completed with one edit needed.

All skips and edits have been cleared through to today's Trailbreaker.

The Inspector for the series to 38700 will be launched nowl

Those skips were all potholes as expected. There were no edits.

Update at 18:51 local time .... The processing of today's Trailbreaker went smoothly ... there were mostly potholes, so the total of 42 items was completed in 42 minutes, not including prep time.

The Inspector is running now, and all the potholes will show up, but (hopefully) no edits.

After ** that ** I'll queue up tonight's re-scan from 8001-9000.

I'll be paying close attention to the setup from now on, because the penalty for a mistake is 7 hours of lost time.

The schedule for the three daily runs is tight as it is.

FYI ... I was ** really ** happy about how well Dr. Johnson's talk went ... there were no technical issues until the very end, when audio stopped working.

I think you'll enjoy seeing the video when it becomes available.

I'll provide you with the link to the presentation as soon as I get it, so you can pass it along to Executive Director James Burk, as he requested.

Today's Inspector run just finished, at 20:38 local time... It found 31 potholes as expected, and not edits needed.

Today's re-scan will cover 8001-9000 and it will start shortly.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair..

The re-scan through 9000 revealed 6 posts that had escaped repair during two previous update runs.

Those are now repaired ... I had to endure the smart aleck posts of a recent college graduate who gave Josh Cryer and clark a hard time.  At least the posts are now displaying correctly, for what little they may be worth.

Today's Trailbreaker will try for 39300.

Completed Sequence for ID: 39300

Total time of Processing: 03:06:54

It is unlikely 38 skips can be manually processed in an hour, but that is a stretch goal.

Actual manual update time was 1.7 hours, including breaks, but also including posting to the forum

The inspector will now check those 38 (or so) updates ...

The Inspector found 23 potholes (expected) and no other issues.

Tonight's re-scan will cover 9001-10000

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Post Repair initiative ...

The re-scan over 9001-10000 took much longer than it should have, and the reason is simple enough, but it is disappointing.

The Inspector and the Trailbreaker scripts are right next to each other in the launch folder.

I ran Trailbreaker instead of Inspector.  The script found six posts that still needed attention after the previous two update runs.

However, I've made an extra note to try to prevent a repeat of that particular setup error.

No harm was done but the time budget is tight, so I'll try to avoid making that mistake again.

33 skips seems like a lot, but perhaps some are potholes
Analysis: 23 are potholes
10 Edits is not too bad

All items were processed ... the Inspector will double check the work ...

The Inspector finished with 22 potholes (as expected) and no edits.

Tonight's Re-Scan over 10001 to 11000 will start now.

A new version of WBA is installed.  It will report the script loaded, to try to prevent a repeat of the Update run launched by accident yesterday.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair initiative...

The re-scan finished with a list of 24 edit operations that must be manually reviewed ..

I'll attend to that later today.

In the meantime, today's Trailbreaker will try for 40800

Edits for the Re-Scan to 14000 were completed ... they were all FluxBB rejects

Today's Trailbreaker finished, and it has lots of edits along with one pothole.

I'll tackle it after a break

Update at 20:08 local time

The posts identified as needing attention have all been visited.

Some had BBCODE mistakes, some had dropped characters... all were accepted by FluxBB this time around.

The Inspector will now look at the sequence from 40501 through 40800.

Yay! The inspector found one pothole, as expected, and reported NO edits so a clean bill of health.

Tonight's Re-Scan through 15000 will start now.
