New Mars Articles

I noticed today that the subforum "NewMars Articles" is sitting, archived and locked, at the bottom of the forum.

Given that there's been some discussion of increasing original content on NewMars.com and trying to shine something of a light on it, might we want to bring that subforum back to active status to discuss articles that have been posted and also for people to propose articles?

Relatedly, sometimes we have a really good thread that seems like it might deserve a writeup.  Is this the kind of content we should be putting on NewMars.com?

Re: New Mars Articles

While I'm making suggestions:

We don't seem to have ever gotten our old logo back on top of the site.  I quite liked that logo.  I'm open to other designs too (logo design contest?) but it would be cool to have something a little nicer than what we have right now.

The logo at the top used to link back to the forum index too, which was nice.  We might want to consider putting a link somewhere (On the bar with "Index" "User List" etc maybe?) back to NewMars.com if we're going to be posting content there.

Just some ideas for discussion and consideration, anyway.  The forum has had 100% uptime for the last year or so which is the most important thing.

Here is a page from 2005 the wayback machine where Graeme Skinner was the one doing the round ups....

Re: New Mars Articles

Yup, there it is!  Would that version be high-res enough to use?

Re: New Mars Articles

Hey guys!

I took the engine we were talking about in the "Steam Engines on Mars" thread and wrote it up into an article on Newmars:

Hopefully more to come!

Re: New Mars Articles

That was nicely done and still expressed that we are still not done yet with all of what it will take.

Thanks for doing that....

Re: New Mars Articles

Maybe a round up of the asteriod cacooning topic might be a good article for someone to write.
Placing the content on the home page to garner interest.

Re: New Mars Articles

For SpaceNut re #

First, thanks for the reminder of the many contributions of JoshNH4H during his tenure as a moderator and member of the forum.

And thanks for the interesting teaser of an opportunity for the Asteroid Cocoon contingent.

From my perspective, some work is still needed to reduce uncertainty in numerous areas.

I'm not sure how many bullet points I'm going to come up with, but I'll start and see how far it goes ...

1) Is the surface of Apophis suitable for manufacture into thread?

2) Can equipment fabricated for manufacture of basalt thread here on Earth be adapted to deep space and whatever material Apophis offers?

3) Is there an optimum strategy for wrapping the cocoon.  Calliban's long arm from a pole is what Nature offers as a model, but that would be slowest.

4) Would SpaceNut's idea of tossed toilet paper rolls (as a metaphor of course) work at all, and if so, how would it be designed for the free space situation?

5) What amount of wrapping material is needed?  Nature provides a model of multiple layers of thread. Can we get by with less?

6) Where would the world want the asteroid to be delivered?  I say the world, because there is ** no ** doubt the world has an interest in the project.

7) Speaking of the world ... what international agreements are needed to avoid unhappy and worried people, let alone nations?

Enough for now ...

Re: New Mars Articles

The spiders have solved the problems of economical and efficient wrapping of objects. Study how they do it and benefit from hundreds of millions of years of selection.
