*I found this to be a very amusing anecdote.  Check the "Trivia" section (in fainter print) towards the bottom regarding the NASA connection.

Those pitchfork-waving peasants...wow, talk about a good example of superstition gone beserk.  :-\

P.S.:  A cool web site overall.

Hmmm... Too bad the scrolling doesn't work on my coùputersystem, but anyhoo i knew the story already. And... w/o going into the details (spoiler) Given the fact these people had never seen anything like that before, weren't they acting, in fact, very brave?

They could as well have ran away, but no... Those were the days, when man feareth not thee dragone, but fighteth it!

*You have to scroll down via the blue arrows (perhaps you tried that...sorry).

Well, that's a good point, Rik.  They feared something unknown to them, which is understandable.  They felt the need to protect themselves and etc.  Yes, I see your point.

It is humorous to visualize, in a "dark humor" sort of way.

You often make me rethink my opinions, which I like.  smile  And you're -nice- about it.  :;):

I was referring more to the automatic pronouncement that it was "evil" because it was unknown.  Sort of like the man who, in the same century, was arrested for "intimidating people" by wearing a tophat -- which he'd created and strolled around in public wearing.  :-\

::EDIT::  Here's the bit of trivia, in case the web page isn't working well for others either:

"Trivia: Immediately after Neil Armstrong's historic moon walk, NASA sent a touching telegram to the Mayor of Viladon, the birthplace of the Montgolfier brothers."
