http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s … Mysterious tradition continues
*If I were the "Poe Toaster," I think I'd opt for paying my respects late in the night of Poe's birthday next year (retain the element of surprise), and not in the wee hours of the morning. If the spectators are getting agitated, it's only a matter of time before someone tries to tackle him or worse.
Braved the sub-20 F temperature.
Have been following this on the 'net for a couple of years now. Cognac part of the mystery.
Cool.

(For some reason -- despite having read a handful of his stories and knowing some biographical info -- I think of Poe as having been an Englishman. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I have to remind myself that he was an American. :hm: )

*Speaking of Edgar Allan Poe, I purchased a collection of stories and poems written by him today. I'd read some of his stories in a high school elective course...but of course that's "been a while."
Have never forgotten http://eserver.org/books/poe/bells.html]The Bells. Incredibly powerful poem.
Am enjoying the somber melancholy of his writing.

P.S.: Poe spent some years in England, as a boy in the care of "adoptive" parents. I'd probably read that during my high school studies, and perhaps that's why -- for years -- I somehow was always wanting to identify him as an Englishman but had to remind myself that, no, he was an American. Although England was a tremendous influence on Poe and his writings.

*Have read The Telltale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death. Poe truly deserves all the accolades and praise he's received over these many decades.
I wonder why he chose those 7 specific colors (although the color of the 7th makes perfect sense) for the apartments in The Masque of the Red Death? And in that order (except, again, as the 7th goes)?
That story reminded me of the modern-day reaction to the AIDS scourge. Most people believing they are immune to it, it could never impact their lives, are protected from it somehow (Prince Prospero's abbey fortress with its bolted iron door and etc.), they can ignore it while continuing in their "revelries," etc.
Maybe someone should write The Masque of the AIDS Epidemic.
