Fiancée leads crusade against IRA killers
By David Lister
Murder of young father may prove to be the turning point as support for republican extremists begins to fade
BRIDGEEN Hagans has just one word for the men who killed her fiancé — “scum”.
In any other part of the United Kingdom the description would barely raise an eyebrow, given the circumstances in which Robert McCartney died. He was stabbed in the stomach and kicked repeatedly in the head as he fell to the pavement outside a city-centre pub.
This, though, is the Short Strand in Belfast, where if anybody is to be referred to as “scum” it is certainly not the local IRA.
In this tight-knit republican neighbourhood, it is no surprise that Ms Hagans, 27, can name every one of the IRA members who, she believes, killed her boyfriend; what is astonishing is that she is prepared to do it publicly.
The IRA may be adept at dealing with political crises, but it has been caught off-guard after Mr McCartney’s murder sparked an unprecedented community rebellion and a wave of support from nationalist areas across Northern Ireland.

There are some harrowing photos of the brave widow, Bridgeen Hagans and her two boys aged 2 and 4 in yesterday's TIMES newspaper. Together with the article, it makes powerful reading alright

They’re psychopaths who have been empowered

his murder may prove a turning point as other communities across the province wrestle against their paramilitary rulers

When a 17-year-old was forced to put his hands together as if in prayer before being shot through both wrists, there was no outcry

Intimidation on such a grand scale is a massive challenge to overcome for authorities in Northern Ireland. These "psychopaths" rely on this intimidation and score heavily by it. In the 1920s Chicago mobsters enjoyed such horrific intimidation skills that they were virtually untouchable. Nobody would dare give evidence against them and if they tried, they were often killed. What's changed?

*Frankly, I'm confused about the IRA/Ireland situation. I've tried figuring it out by reading articles and etc. It just seems even more confusing.
Most of Ireland is Catholic, right?
And most folks in Northern Ireland are Protestant?
I don't understand the Northern Ireland relation to the UK particularly. If the rest of Ireland is basically a republic, why ISN'T northern Ireland and what exactly are they fighting the UK about? Because they (the IRA) want the Church of England brought down and Catholicism re-established as the primary religious-political power throughout?
I probably am hopelessly confused, but decided to take a risk (at looking terribly ignorant -- no thanks to conflicting information and doubtless some "spin" along the way), and respond. :-\

P.S.: Or does the IRA simply want complete independence for northern Ireland from the UK? And if so, how do they envision northern Ireland in relation to the remainder of Ireland?

Long ago (centuries) London sought to colonize Ireland with English and Scot settlers and displace the native Irish. Catholic Ireland was granted independence from Britain not all that long ago yet Northern Ireland, where large numbers of Protestants live was carved out and is not part of Ireland. Hitorically, the northern Ireland Protestants are descended from settlers (invaders?).
Current conflict (IMHO) arises from mobsters and gangsters on both sides exploiting historical animosities between the Catholic Irish people and the Protestant English and Scots while some Irish see the Unionists as "invaders" even if the invasion was 400 years ago and the Unionists see the Catholic Irish IRA as terrorists - - which perhaps they are.
= = =
When I was in school - - in Chicago - - I vaguely knew a few people who would sing IRA drinking songs in pubs. Sad songs of martyrs who died at the hands of evil Englishmen centuries ago.

What Northern Ireland is, is the West Bank a few hundred years from now, with a better climate and good beer.

On one hand you have Catholics, Irish-Republicans, Ireland-Nationalists, then extreme groups like IRA and the Real-IRA ( a small break away group that continues violence )
The on the other hand you have Loyalist-English, Northern-Unionists, English-protestants and terrorist groups like the UDA, LVF and UFF ( where violence continues ).
Today they don't fight as much and it isn't about religion and more about power and politics
Bill Clinton played a big role in the peace process and getting both sides to come together under some form of government. The Clinton admin and others from Ireland and England helped to get Northern Ireland's divided community to sit down together, it works out about 48% Irish republican 52% English loyalist. Tensions pop up every while and things start looked bad but it mostly works out somehow
The North seems to have a long and bitter history, but they are well educated and have a lot of brains unlike those Idiot crackpots in the Middle East that just want to continue blowing up things and destroying their own country, but then again has the middle east been given enough attention and enough help ?

*I think folks in the Middle East have been given plenty of attention and assistance.
It just goes to show where the mindless "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" (no matter how small the slight) mentality leads: A continual whirl of violence. A never-ending vicious cycle.
Someone has to be The Adult eventually, lay down arms and walk up to the negotiating table.
If the Irish have a greater measure of peace and security now, I'm glad for them.
