Using holographic displays as windows

Seems to me that if you live in a pressurized habitat in a large settlement, you would want to minimize the amount of air leakage to the outside, that means few rooms will have windows to the outside, in some schemes the habitat is built underground, otherwise its under a dome. Most people won't get windows in their domiciles and workspaces, substituting for that would be a holographic display, the idea is to make them the size of windows and have the resolution high enough and the illumination bright enough so that when looking at it, it appears you are looking through a window, one can display any scene one prefers, maybe even place house plants next to it, have curtains and whatever else you want. Otherwise the displays can be used for work or entertainment, it can link up to various probes on the planet's surface, and from the comfort of the hab, you can see whatever the robot sees. What do you think, will this technology be available by the time we send astronauts to Mars? Do you think they will prefer to look at a holographic display or through an actual glass window with the Martian atmosphere on the other side?

Camera's feeding live images to a large led or lcd tv screen...could even display earth scenes if its wanted....

If you do that, then why leave Earth?

Re: Using holographic displays as windows

I've certainly suggested video screens showing live views of the hab's surroundings. Not sure how good holographic imagery is but if it can be done economically to a high standard, so much the better.

Re: Using holographic displays as windows

Well by the time we have humans on Mars, I'm sure than some advancements will have been made. I think a small hab will have plenty of windows to let in light. Larger communities will try to minimize the surface area in relation to volume, most people won't get an apartment with windows, so they may desire artificial windows instead, and after a while they may grow tired of seeing a bleak Martian landscape. Lets suppose we had a dome, and we cover the sides of the dome with flat holographic display screens, while making the roof transparent, the sides will show a virtual landscape, maybe we can dress up the naked Martian desert, put trees on it for instance and grass, making the limited landscape under the dome look more spacious with the illusion of it being outdoors.. Maybe have random holographic weather which corresponds with turning the sprinkler system on and off when a virtual thunder storm arrives perhaps. People will see the holographic clouds looming and would know to get indoors before the computer turns on the sprinklers at full blast, with plenty of fans to create the howling gusts of the storm. Would you want to live with such artificial weather, or do you think that would be silly?
