Re: Dr No

Topic: Dr No syndrome, Terror as 3rd force uniting nations

International terrorism under the weirdly charismatic leadership of Osama, really does seem to be having the effect of a "3rd force threat syndrome" (like the "Dr No" villain in the first James Bond 007 movie) to unify the opposing national regimes of the world. A home-grown version, perhaps, of the fictional alien threats from space represented by "V" or "Independence Day." I wonder what the "Osama Effect" will have on the our future (say) 20 years from now? Why aren't we taking advantage of the unifying effect that "our very own proxy-alien" is handing us on a platter, e.g., to foster international cooperation in support of human space travel?

Re: Dr No

I don't think that Osama is powerful enough to be an effective "proxy alien."  In order for a 3rd force to unify countries, the countries have to be more afraid of it than they are of each other, and I don't think that that is the case with Osama.

Re: Dr No

Following the latest (ugh) news, I note that Osama really DOES seem a power to be reckoned with: Suicide bombing Islamic pilgrims just anywhere? Shucks, he doesn't even need to think up what to do. We're doing all that for him, and publicizing it full-time....
But, what inspired me to write this post, was a replay of an old speech by Ronald Reagan as President to the UN, shown last night on TV, in which he suggested that [and I'm paraphrasing from memory] an alien invasion would bring all the Worlds's nations together to oppose the common foe. He went on to say, in the absence of such a foe couldn't we consider War itself, as an alien threat to the World? Well, it doesn't make too much sense in print, I admit, but the way he expressed it (and he was good at that) I found very persuasive. My point is: An actual third force (Osama) is being handed to the World on a plattter, while Bush's war (not War in general, which was Reagan's premise) is playing out as quite the opposite of a third force.

With every passing week, Osama bin Laden's power to be be an effective "proxy alien" grows, and now it appears that the Muslims are starting to recognize this, as well. i.e.:

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain's leading Islamic body has issued a religious order declaring Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) to have forsaken Islam by backing attacks such as the Madrid train bombings a year ago.
The Islamic Commission of Spain timed its "fatwa" for Friday to coincide with the first anniversary of last year's attacks, which killed 191 people and were claimed in the name of al Qaeda in Europe.
The commission's secretary general Mansur Escudero said the fatwa had moral, rather than legal weight and would serve as a guide for Muslims.
"We declare ... that Osama bin Laden and his al Qaeda organization, responsible for the horrendous crimes against innocent people who were despicably murdered in the March 11 terrorist attack in Madrid, are outside the parameters of Islam," the commission said.

We may yet have to thank him (!) for almost single-handedly causing the disparate nations of Earth to unite in their fear of his ability to ursurp the iniative (through his weapon of human suicidal terrorism) from even the most despicable dictators' personal ambitions to wield power over their own citizenry.

I say: What the hell, if it serves to get us off the planet, in time....
