Pretty sure firearms existed and were widespread in America 50 years ago... it wasn't their absence that prevented school shootings.

For Terraformer re #26
Good point... your post reminded me of recent panel discussion of changes in the American psyche ...
There was a time when all levels of American society were revolted by the excesses of powerful weapons used by gangs, and constraints were imposed.
Google found this snippet:
Because it could be obtained so easily, the Thompson became notorious during the Prohibition era as the signature weapon of various organized crime syndicates in the United States in the 1920s. It was a common sight in the media at the time, and was used by both law enforcement officers and criminals.

About Featured Snippets
We (Americans) have blown past the self-constraints, so that the powers of the Thompson seem puny in comparison to permitted weapons of today.
The capability to experience revulsion seems to have waned.
I wonder if a population can experience "mental" illness. Certainly individual humans can. What is a "healthy" mental state of a population?
There are regions in South American and elsewhere in the world where what might be considered "norms" of human behavior have shifted over time.
It occurs to me that the same might well be considered for some populations within the United States.
The current war in Europe may well have arisen from a pervasive paranoia in a population.
In another topic, recently brought back into view by Mars_B4_Moon, the theme is the presence of weapons on Mars.
It seems to me that the example Mars_B4_Moon, of the absence of weapons in the stations in Antarctica is instructive.
According to the post by Mars_B4_Moon, there is only one weapon in the entire continent, and that is kept in a safe.
The level of fear of others is likely to be low in the population of Antarctica.
On the other hand, in the Arctic, bears are present and they are a significant danger, so weapons make perfect sense.

Seems the federal checks have failed, mental checks are hidden behind HIPA, and with so many on the streets that are not in any data base no wonder its getting easier to gather as many as you want to have to do what you please with them.

Terrifying moment supermarket shooter lights up cigar and opens fire on innocent shopper in horrifying rampage
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl … ebook.html
A gunman has filmed himself opening fire in a supermarket after hunting around the store for 'someone good' - and failing to hit them.
Richard Klaff, 20, broadcast the shooting live on Facebook as he prepared for and carried out the attack on a Kroger in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He began about 6.15pm on Thursday by lighting up a cigar in a bathroom upstairs from the Georgetown Kroger, claiming 'I'm gonna shoot 11 people... watch'.
He cocked the pistol several times before heading downstairs and wandering around the supermarket looking for the right target.
