Re: New Mars Podcast

Okay, before taking over malapropos completely: post your ideas re: a possible New Mars podcast here.

(podcasts are 'blogs' but in audio. Not neccesary to own an iPod, to listen to them, though.)

Re: New Mars Podcast

*Not directed at you, Rik.

Here's a little hardball.

What will be discussed/broadcast/whatever?  Very few (and I mean very few) NM members ever post at the threads devoted to the MERs, MOC/MGS, MRO, MPL or Mars Express, etc., related threads.  That's for starters.  Check the threads -- they'll bear me out.

Most discussion at NM now (for the longest unfortunate time) seems to revolve around politics and assorted bits of small talk.

Want the 2 or 3 of us who regularly post the hard science and missions info to supply the info?  Granted, I'll happily keep posting on the Mars (and other) hard science, Mars (and other) missions, etc.  I'm just wondering what everyone else is going to do -- besides talk about politics and assorted trivialities.

I don't know anything about podcasting, btw.  If some of the stuff I post daily helps out, so be it (I'm doing my part; what about you?).  Beyond that, some folks need to get out of a badly entrenched rut and start showing some interest in MARS again.

There, I finally said it loud and clear.

Re: New Mars Podcast

ooh, bad vibezzzz!

I think there are still a lot of people here doing interesting stuff, and never underguesstimate the 'newbies,' I know I don't visit/post a lot lately, but I keep half an eye open to some really devoted new people here.

And who knows, maybe an 'old' and bored regular will ressurect to become a very good radio reporter?

I guess the 'oldies' not posting a lot about Mars is because they read more than post; lots of things are 'old news' to us, so we don't feel having much to add etc...

Anyhoo, if you're not interested in free chatter, don't visit it...

Re: New Mars Podcast

There's something I miss about New Mars that could make for good podcasting. Discussion/debate about terraforming. How to do it, should we do it, when to do it. Social implications of living on Mars, what problems will we likely encounter, that sort of stuff.

Sure, the old regulars here have largely beat it into the ground but a podcast has a somewhat different target audience than a message board. I'd gladly take part in 'cast discussion of such matters. There are plenty of people out there who have no interest in reading posts from a bunch of techies who nevertheless would be very interested in these sorts of discussions. All sorts of things could be done, not only hard science updates/discussion but discussion of more speculative topics.  Radio plays, Mars music, a wide variety of stuff that can all serve to build interest and support for manned exploration.

Almost everyone has something to contribute, the content should be broad.

Re: New Mars Podcast

There is/was a quite interesting topic running re: terraforming. Noosfractal went the whole mile with digging up charts and all that... I enjoyed it immensely, not in the least because it was one of the few topics that stayed on-topic for more than a week, heehee

Re: New Mars Podcast

*Hey guys:  If the podcasting goes ahead, I certainly don't wish it any bad luck.

Maybe it'll prove to be the shot in the arm this forum needs.

In the meantime, it sure would be nice to see more activity in the Mars science and missions threads.

Re: New Mars Podcast

A while back, the thought occurred to have the space advocacy gurus record video and audio of their stump speeches. I've attended a number of conferences recently and would suggest the following for starters:

Robert Zubrin

(Of course! He is a riot when speaking live. Very entertaining and informative.)

Rick Tumlinson

(A recent line - "If we ain't going to stay - - send toasters")

George Whitesides - Genteel George

and so on. . .

Yes, but I got over it!  lol  (not really, but...)

Anyhoo, quick google into how to set up your (FREE!) podcasts reveals plenty of info...

http://www.podcastingnews.com/topics/Po … tware.html   lotsa free soft;
http://www.podomatic.com/user/register/podcast  a free server (!)

and some step by step howto's etc...

Now 250Mb sounds good, for free, but if this gets popular...  :?

Re: New Mars Podcast

Could we record a Skype session? We'd want lots of people on it. Maybe a fun discussion between Robert and I about the wonders of suicide missions to Mars. Or arguments between Robert and GCRN, or fights between Cindy and clark!

Erm, sorry, just teasing. But a Skype session recording could be interesting. Who wants to talk about hydroponics?

Re: New Mars Podcast

Well, prior to any fights, you should make sure that users have a "mute" button to allow them the opportunity to selectively filter out the voices they do not want to hear.  lol

If you keep it up, you will end up locking this thread too.  tongue

  You mean I just have to press the mute button to stop those voices in my head?

Didn't know Skype could do that! Maybe 'cause I use the mac version, which is lagging behind re: features?

Re: New Mars Podcast

I don't know if Skype has that feature (or even if it can record conversations, but I think it would be able to). I'll ask my brother Jason, he's always using Skype with his friends. I'll look at that site some more Rxke, see what would be best. That 250 MB account could give us an idea of how it would be, then we could look into getting a better host.

Re: New Mars Podcast

Oh, man...   I was joking.

Yes, you can do 'conference calls' with Skype... But recording it, I guess you'll need anothe, additional  program, that runs in the background.

OTOH... I woner how good -or rather bad- such a conference would sound... or thre would be a good moderator and some well prepared talkingpoints etc...

I'd like to hear Karov, noosfractal, SpaceNut, chat... do one on terraformation.   big_smile

While I certainly would enjoy listening, am I really the right one for teraforming?
I hold no degrees so otherwise I am just a normal science, Space Nut with minimal to none, for qualifications for such discusions. I am game to try even if it is a good laugh at ones own expense... for bringing not enough knowledge on the topic.

Hmm, I personally have no big opinion on it. But we can set something up, I need to look more in to it though (still haven't had a chance). If you guys go ahead and set something up I'll make a post to the front page of NewMars regarding whatever podcasts you do create.
