Re: Agricultural Colony Alpha

Sure we can shell out the 200 million billion needed to resupply ten million colonists from earth, or 20 thousand billion for a Space colony, but should we? With the cost of human presence-Space colonies and HLLV launches so high, Is it better to just set up an orbital Agriculture station between Earth and the Moon and confine humans for now to the Planetary Colonization sites of Mars and the Moon.

While, Just having a big food production facilitity in Space that can support the export needs for non beef & dairy foods is doble. A single space cylinder for food production 500m diameter and 500m in length could be launched as a single stage vehicle. The "Fuel tank compartments" offer an assortment of isolatable ecosystems. Entire hives of bees could produce honey and polinate the host plants simultaneously. A Small Human presence could be all that is required to monitor and process the ecosystem.

Re: Agricultural Colony Alpha

What about transporting the food to colonies? It would still cost a lot from transportation. Wouldn't it just be more efficient to build it right next to the colony on Mars?

Re: Agricultural Colony Alpha

Yeah Mace,

But what are you going to eat on the four month trip there? Or the other six months in Agricultural tool up. A mobile Agriculture Colony could simply attatch itself to the Passenger Vehicle and provide them with the food they need on their journey out there and get work out of them along the way...Ag colony returns to its orbit in close proximity to Earth and the Next team of Colonists use it to travel out.

It proves the viability of the Ag Colony as a step in future of Feeding Space colonies. whether it is a colony ship or a space station.

Besides, an Ag Colony has a natural economy Lunar dirt for food.
