I've done a couple of searches for a FAQ on New Mars forums, but I've been unable to locate one - something with basic facts on Mars (and space in general) and other useful information. Most forums/newsgroups have them and though I'd never looked in the past I presumed NM had one as well, have I missed it somewhere?

To the best of my knowledge we don't have one. I would suspect that we won't in the foreseeable future as well as there are numerous sources on the web for information on Mars and space in general so we'd be essentially duplicating it here and the forum itself has no real firmly established rules and norms so there's little to say in that regard.

Which I suppose could imply that any action taken by moderators here is rather arbitrary, but let's brush that aside for the moment.   

Not that a collection of links to relevant information or some type of compiled reference couldn't be created here, just no one has yet done so.

clark had started a pseudo-FAQ. So ask away. Let's use this thread for such things.

I'll start.

Q: What are the rules of New Mars?

A: New Mars, technically, has no rules, and probably won't force rules down your throat (ie, "accept these rules before joining") for awhile yet (at least until we get a lot bigger).

But New Mars does moderate with general "nettique" in mind.

The first, and foremost, absolutely most important "rule" is simple, and if you've made it this far, you probably have a general understanding of the internet and know; no spamming. Spamming is easy enough to define, it's any repetitive behavior that annoys people, think about your behavior and you'll figure it out. If you think you're being annoying, you probably are, if you don't think you're being annoying, but someone says you're being annoying, you probably are. If a moderator says you're being annoying, you defintely are, and it would be best to stop being annoying.

Really, that's the One True Rule.

Other behaviorial hints are just sense too, though. You're new here? Hang out awhile, and start posting, try to participate in current discussions for a little while, it doesn't hurt, and you'll get to know people better. Starting your own threads outright isn't really going to help us get to know you, and you might feel alienated if people avoid your threads.

Another hint is try to be a bit verbose, nothing inherently wrong with one liners (hey, they bump up the post count, make us look good!), but sometimes if something isn't very substantial maybe it's not worth saying at all.

Read whole threads, before participating, or at least the last few weeks worth of posts; why contribute to a conversation without knowing it, anyway? It's more interesting to see what other people have said, if you say something that was just said a page before, regular contributors to the conversation will think "hmm, that person is not paying much attention!"

Actually, surprise. I lied. New Mars has a rule. One rule, and one rule only. Adrian Hon is the Benevolent Dictator in Charge, and I am his Follower and Humble Servent. Heed His Will. For His Will Is Final. Cobra Commander, and Bill White are the Master Guards, you can complain if they're being naughty (but it won't get you anywhere most likely).

And to answer Graeme's question, which I realize I didn't do, Wikipedia is probably your best resource. We had started a wiki here, but it has gone the wayside, and really, it's not worth mentioning unless you really want to know about it (search for wiki).

I think this thread should become a New Mars FAQ thread, though, what do you think?

Q: What is the difference between the "Guests", "Public Members", and "Anonymous Members" users on New Mars?

A: Guests are people who have not logged on to New Mars, and cannot post (other than in certain threads) or have not registered with New Mars. Registration is free and allows you to post in any thread. Usually, these "Guests" are called "lurkers" who read threads for any number of personal reasons, but choose not to post or contribute to the discussions.

Public Members are registered users who have logged on. They are brave and do not fear being seen on New Mars.

Anonymous Members are registered users who have logged on. They are cowardly and are afraid of being seen on New Mars. Usually, they are called "ghosts" as they are heard, but never seen.

You'd be surprised of the difference between PM's to me before and after I started posting anonymously. Not that I don't like PM's, but wow, being an Admin has it's challenges sometimes (I wonder if Bill and Cobra are getting as many PM's).
