On September 17, 1859, Joshua Norton, who was then a resident of the City of San Francisco, proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States. 

In recognition and appreciation of Emperor Norton?s eccentricity, audacity, and perspicacity, and in order to further the establishment of a well rounded and highly regarded Martian culture, now, therefore,

I, Scott G. Beach, do hereby PROCLAIM that (1) I am the Emperor of Mars and that (2) whenever any Martian sees another person wearing a representation of the Martian flag, that Martian shall salute that flag in the following manner.

Fold the thumb of the left hand against the palm of that hand and extend all four fingers straight out.  The four extended fingers acknowledge that Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun.  While holding the left hand in a horizontal plane, place the left index finger against the left side of the forehead, slightly above the left eyebrow.  Then move the left hand horizontally to the left about 15 centimeters (6 inches), then down and to the right about 5 centimeters, then to the left about 15 centimeters.  This zigzag motion of the hand represents the apparent motion of Mars as seen from Earth during the opposition of Earth and Mars.

I've always liked the term "Planet Lord" myself. Yes, salute the Planet Lord. The rigid digit is acceptable.

That's what I expect to be the true Martian salute, at least as it pertains to Earth.

Food for thought: Many astronauts speak of a certain idea that takes hold of them as they gaze upon the orb of blue. The fragile home to all of us.

Those who go off into space, would they be immune to such musings?

Perhaps a future Mars, or space colony for that matter, might take a different tack when dealing with the mother world and their very own independance.

Would you strike your own mother?

Just something to consider before we deploy the bombs or asteroids...
