I can't think of a worse waste of household income... the tobacco may provide some nice effects for a while, but then you begin to associate the tobacco use with certain events, not the actual pleasure of it.
If people could sit down every once in a while and have a cigar, or a cigarette, I'm sure the whole situation wouldn't be as bad as it is today. But it becomes bad when you get into a ritual of using the tobacco, like after breakfast or dinner, or during your coffee breaks. It's just a bad thing...
However, I don't think we need to outlaw tobacco use. If people truly don't like smoking, and don't want to face the risks, they'll quit. If we outlawed it, they'd just get contraband. And I would hate to see that huge industry go out business, and all of those tobacco farmers in the south lose their jobs when I doubt they're the ones doing the bulk of the smoking.

Hmm, if you want to ban tobacco, but not lose any revenues or jobs, just legalize hemp. It's more valuable than tobacco could ever be. Plus, we wouldn't have to tax poor people to death like we do with the cigarette taxes. (I honestly think the cost of cigarettes contributes to the smoker smoking! )

Why buy a PS2 if you have a computer? The logic behind this escapes me.
Anyway. Legalize hemp, ban tobacco. I agree, Josh.

Because computers get outdated with every passing day, and your new computer games run slower and slower. Game platforms don't get surpassed for at least 18 months, and it remains very current for about 36 months.
A new computer costs $1000... a PS2 costs $150.
The Sims expansion packs cost $39... a PS2 game costs $35.
My underlying point was, if you're bored, there are a million ways to stay entertained. Pick one besides using tobacco, please Pagan.

My games are better than PS2 ones. They look better, they sound better, and they require more intelligence to play. They're harder, and they last longer. (Not including quick-conversions from console to PC).
And, my computer costs me 500 pounds every year to upgrade. Which is about 250 dollars, or so. And, I can do more with my computer than anyone can with a PS2. So there. Nya nya, and all that.

a brand new computer costs $500. i know, i build them for myself and friends.
but if a pc gets outdated every day, and its more powerful than a ps2, what does that say about the ps2's obsolesence?
personally, i have both. i like to play some games on a console, but the PC is much more powerful overall.

Can you guys accept a point for its surface value? I told you that my comment was trying to say that if you need to use tobacco to fight off boredom, find something better to do with your time. Personally, I don't own a PS2, and I'm pretty sure I have a new computer in a box under my Christmas tree right now, so I don't really care. You shouldn't smoke to keep from being bored.

I gather that that's his excuse. If he merely smoked when he was bored, all it would take is a girlfriend or something to get him to stop. But since he's most likely addicted, this is not the case. Nicotine is one of the most addicting chemicals. Something the cigarette companies denied for decades yet knew all along.
He needs to stop smoking tobacco immediately, and start using truely recreational drugs like pot... at least then his excuse about boredom would be legit...

Jesus Christ, Cal, lighten up. I was mostly joking. But even still, I would consider marijuana much less damaging than cigarettes, and even less damaging than alcohol.
All it does is reduce your IQ a bit, but from studies, it takes a shitload of pot over a pretty long period of time to depreciate your IQ.

Why should I not trust a police officer? Someone who's always there to help, and sees these types of addicts all the time. Why experiment when someone you trusts tells you the answer?
And why would the government ban marijuana? Do you think they just "wanted to make it hard on the common man, trying to escape his problems"? No. If the government says its bad for you, I find it hard not to trust them.
Josh, if we could use hemp for only fuels, textiles, etc., those companies would have jumped on the hemp research wagon a long time ago. I doubt that if it was the real "wonder material" they would have just let it pass them by. And if they really wanted hemp, they'd lobby the government to LEGALIZE pot, not keep it illegal like they're doing.

actually it was this wonder material. and cops can be corrupt. the cop is also not telling you from his point of view, hes teaching what hes told to teach.
the government also says oil is clean. do you trust that?

No, almost every cop I've ever talked to has told us that drugs are a downward spiral. I don't even want to experiment when I already know the answer.
Didn't they make you watch those gruesome videos about the trackster who died at 25 because he got cancer in his mouth? The pus-filled white cavity in his gums? The skoal can they hid under the fuse box? Don't you remember that Soph?!
And when did the government tell me oil was clean? You just have to walk through the orange groves of southern California on a cold day to see that.
I think you're referring to the OIL COMPANY sponsored ads about how an oil heater is more EFFICIENT. Nobody ever said it burns cleaner...

Cal, I think you're very silly to think that, somehow, magically, eco-lobbiests could get hemp legalized. This country is extremely afraid of hemp, after some 6 decades of brainwashing, our society doesn't even know hemp was the primary resource for paper, clothing (the war of 1812 was fought with hemp clothing), and textiles. It was even used to light oil lamps, second only to whale oil. Hell, even the freaking Smithsonian has eradicated any mention of hemp, despite the fact that the majority of papers, and textiles there were made with it.
You know what I find extremely hilarious? That marijuana (hemp) was banned because it was making our children go mad and so on. Yet in 1942, when Japan cut off their hemp exports to us, we petititoned 4-H clubs to grow fucking hemp!. So we had kids out there growing hemp for the government. Isn't that something?
Edit: changed 1937 to 1942- screwed up my dates badly.
Check this out: http://www.crrh.org/hemptv/docs_victory … ctory.html
It's just a movie the government made back in WW2. I'm not asking you to read pro-marijuana propaganda, I'm suggesting you watch something our own government made during WW2, when Japan stopped exporting hemp.

I can't watch streaming video. I'm on a 28.8k copper wire connection out in the mountains on a P75 machine.
What did the video say, exactly?
And I'm still not clear on when the government banned its use. When was the first law passed banning marijuana use in these United States?

It was banned in 1937.

What's the difference between marijuana and hemp then? I'm sorry if my questions are a little nieve. I don't grow a lot of pot, as you can tell
