Citizenship is a construct of human beings.
It appears to me that the Universe itself takes no position on "citizenship"
The question of citizenship has become increasingly important to certain individuals in the United States during the Earth Year 2026.
Citizenship is significant in the lives of Americans because it is tied to government policies.
For example, citizenship is a requirement for some political offices, most notably the Presidency.
A full accounting of government positions that require citizenship in the United States would be an interesting addition to this topic.
Certain benefits are provided to citizens that are not provided to non-citizens.
Human beings are subject to temptation to attempt to secure benefits to which they are not entitled, and as a result, those responsible for distributing benefits find themselves having to sort out who is eligible from who is not.
This situation extends to the all-important function of voting.
It remains to be seen how this situation is going to unfold in the United States.
Other nations on Earth are quite likely to be dealing with the same problem in their own unique ways.

And this ** topic ** is available for NewMars members who might wish to offer suggestions for how settlers on Mars might establish and maintain citizenship.
