Foundations for Buildings on Mars

This topic is inspired by work of Calliban, including but not limited to design of a gigantic brick dome.

This dome would be large enough to hold a small village on Mars, with amenities that would appear (as I interpret them) to be agreeable to many humans.

The purpose of ** this ** topic is to provide a place for NewMars members to build up knowledge about how to set the foundations for large buildings on Mars.

As of this date, in late November of 2025, it seems to me that we (humans) have very limited knowledge of the location of bedrock upon which to build large structures such as those proposed by Calliban.

There appears to be a substantial amount of satellite data that provides some hints about the nature of the crust at various points around Mars.

There is ** some ** data collected by landed rovers that may help identify layers of material under the surface.

As GW Johnson pointed out back in 2012 in the Foundation topic started by Louis, there have been NO successful drill operations on Mars, deeper than the failed experiment that tried to jiggle a probe into the regolith.
