Trompe method of compressing air - Ancient Technology - Modern uses

Calliban introduced the Trompe method of compressing air to this forum.  There are numerous posts containing the term.

I asked Google about the word, and learned that it does not refer to a clever engineer, but to a whole generation of clever engineers who developed the method.  Here is a set of snippets that give a sense of the information that is available:

Re: Trompe method of compressing air - Ancient Technology - Modern uses

One of the citations in Post #1 is for an article in Low Tech magazine.

https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/2018/ … r-economy/

The article covers the history of compressed air (possibly going back 4000 years for metal working) through a complete system in use for many years in Paris, to today's trial systems in Europe and the US.

The article discusses efficiency in great detail.

The Trompe system is included.

One interesting section describes a closed loop Trompe, which employs an electric pump to return water to the top of the column.

The pump decreases efficiency, but surprisingly, the efficiency is still 73% (if memory serves).

A detail to note.... gas is absorbed by the water, so that the amount of air delivered to the storage tank is less than the amount taken in at the top of the column.

I would expect that effect to wash out if the system is a closed loop for water, while air arrives at ambient and departs at pressure.

A detail for our members to develop is how high the water column would need to be to achieve pressures of multiple hundreds of bar.

it may turn that Earth's gravity is insufficient to handle the requirement.

Undersea pumped storage is under development in Germany.

The only objection I have to this idea is that the pump and turbine must also be deep underwater or underground.  Undersea CAES using a trompe would have a lower maintenance burden.
