Quartz

This topic is offered for NewMars members who might wish to contribute to a collection of links and text about the material.

The topic comes up as kbd512 and others attempt to figure out how to design a propulsion system able to (somehow) direct solar energy (photons) onto a system to heat hydrogen gas.

Google came up with a large collection of snippets. It appears that quartz melts at a temperature on the order of 1670 Celsius or 1713 Celsius.

what is the melting point of quartz used for heat measurement in industrial equipment

Birefringence    +0.009 (B-G interval)
Pleochroism    None

Melting point    1670 °C (β tridymite); 1713 °C (β cristobalite)

Solubility    Insoluble at STP; 1 ppmmass at 400 °C and 500 lb/in2 to 2600 ppmmass at 500 °C and 1500 lb/in2

Re: Quartz

Quartz has been chosen as a material "of interest" for the Focused Solar Optical Plane Deep Space vessel in discussion in early 2025.

Google came up with this (to me surprising) report:

Can quartz be melted and shaped?
The quartz sand is melted in a tungsten crucible that contains electrical heating elements; the fused material flows down from the crucible through a bottom mould where it is shaped into tubes, plates and rods.

This appears to support a vision of enclosing a heating chamber with quartz, so that photons can be admitted to the heating chamber without melting the material through which they are passing, or so that the heated gas inside the chamber does not melt the window.

Re: Quartz

The nuclear light bulb version of gas core nuclear fission rockets had a nested pair of quartz cylinders as its engine chamber.  The cold liquid hydrogen flowed between them,  getting heated on its way to the nozzle,  by the uranium gas fireball inside the inner cylinder.  This was late 1950's early 1960's design concept work.  The materials and technologies were never finalized.
