Purpose Built Rescue Spacecraft

For SpaceNut ....

None of them seemed a good fit for this topic.

In working on the Space Tug concept recently, GW Johnson identified the need for a spacecraft design from the beginning to serve as a rescue vessel. We humans are going to need something along those lines.

On Earth, a variety of emergency vehicles have evolved from horse drawn carts.  The "ambulance" is a vehicle time that exists (as near as I can tell) in every Nation.

A space rescue purpose built vessel would have features appropriate to the mission, and capabilities beyond the run-of-the-mill transport.

Re: Purpose Built Rescue Spacecraft

This update is about docking adapters.

I asked Gemini to look up any information that might be available on the docking collar installed in the Orion Capsule that is itself installed in the upper stage of Artemis II.

Gemini came back with a set of NASA references, and a Wikipedia reference for Orion.  The bottom line is that the Orion capsule has a "standard" NASA Docking System.  I quoted "standard" because the docking adapter is compatible with newer systems, such as Dragon II, but not with other systems.

The information I was looking for is right there, in that one citation.

The Dragon II can (or could) dock to the Orion capsule.

I am interested in this because it lends support to my inquiry into use of a Starship as a Wingman vehicle to fly alongside the Artemis Moon flight, and to dock with the Orion capsule on the way home. The purpose would be to slow the Orion capsule to LEO velocity.

As most NewMars members know by now, the heat shield in the Artemis II system is defective/deficient and should not be used because it's use puts lives at risk.

NASA will probably fly with the existing heat shield for a long list of reasons, all of which boil down to cost.

The alternative that I am exploring is to send a Starship along with the Orion capsule around the Moon, so that the Starship can slow the Orion before it faces the risky challenge of entering Earth's atmosphere at Earth escape velocity.
