Geology, Mars, Earth and Elsewhere

This forum lacks a general topic on geology.  This thread is raised accordingly.

Re: Geology, Mars, Earth and Elsewhere

Metamorphic rocks have been found on Mars.
https://scitechdaily.com/scientists-fin … nite-mars/

Mars lacks techtonics and its crust is essentially a single plate without subduction zones.  The geothermal gradient also appears to be shallower than that of Earth, with greater depths needed to reach the temperature and pressure needed to drive metamorphic processes.  So metamorphic rock is expected to be rarer on Mars and what does exist was expected to be buried deep within the crust.  However, local metamorphesis can occur due to magma eruption through sedimentary rock.  This provides the heat needed to drive dehydration reactions.  So metamorphic rocks may be found on Mars surface in volcanically active regions.  This is exactly what has been detected.

Thanks for creating a topic for this important branch of knowledge!

I did a quick Google lookup:

Metamorphic Rocks - National Geographic …
WebMetamorphic rocks are rocks that change from one type of rock to another due to pressure, heat, and time. Learn how metamorphic rocks form, what conditions are required, and what types of metamorphic rocks exist. See examples of metamorphic rocks such as gneiss, …
