We might one day live on Mars but the Martian land is already a wasteland
On Earth the most common form of weather modification is cloud seeding, it was famously noticed during Chernobyl in which the Russians made it rain, it is a process in which increases rain or snow. Russia used this method to prevent Moscow from receiving radioactive rainfall or fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown. Today 'Weather Modifictaion' exists and it is done usually for the purpose of increasing the local water supply, it can remove pollutants from the air. Let's say in a near future nobody politically cares about polluting the Air of Mars, not a single bacteria or cell is found, not a microbe or bit of hidden fungus not a worm and after years of exploration we discover Mars has No Life. Mars is still colonized Robots go there, Humans arrive and massive production factories are set up. With Industrial Economic Production will come Pollution, if uncontrolled Gasses are dumped out there all kind of Global Cooling or Global Warming Greenhouse Gases, all mixes of Nitrous oxide (N2O), Chloroform, Butanal, Silver iodide AgI, Aerosols, Isopropyl Alchol, Sulfur hexafluoride SF6, Acetone, Water, Methane, Carbon disulfide, Nitrogen trifluoride NF3, Volcanic Smoke aka Carbon Coal Sulphur Smogs, CO2, Acrolein, CFC-12 aka Freon-12 or CCl2F, more bits of Asteroids and parts of Comets are dumped on Mars, pollutants are unregulated every is chemical and gas mixed and dumped the Anti-greenhouse effect of Titan plus the Global Warming Gas of Earth & Venus, is is getting polluted to its Max Levels.
Some things I thought of
1We make it rain but it rains some Chemical Hazard and neuro-Toxic Substance, this in fact makes Mars a little more dangerous than it already is
2Humans killed something and there is a moral debate. Mars is later found to have some life a cell or fungus or worm thing but we killed it by Warming or Cooling Mars or putting new Chemistry on Mars....there is then a quest to save whatever fungus or worm we killed and put it in a zoo.
3Through an unforeseen event maybe the release of some underground gas or we do something stupid or mess up with our Production Factor and the balance goes the wrong way, we cool Mars too much, the Martian landscape gets even colder.
4We Warm up Mars and it gets too hot, very unlikely.
5Mars is changed for the next 16,000 Years whatever process we started is almost irreversible, the change is not what we expected and can not be undone.
