Goats, Spiders, Mice of Mars... Animals Unconventional

Will animals add to the 'culture'? On Earth in ancient times people made paints from bugs or plants, these bigger animals have been transformed into musical instruments for hundreds maybe thousands of years.

Spiders?

This topic might also include crazy ideas for a future Mars colony like genetically engineered Crayfish, cloned Lizards, animals with robotic 3d printed implants to help them fly? stay secure or stay warm? Tilapia fishmeat, growing fly larvae and general insect populations, spiders to catch insects? something else to feed on spiders? Rabbits pets could be a morale boost for a colony facing mental hardships? Animals are Food, or Manure makers? Mini Cows, some type of Pig or Mangalitsa,  Honey production inside a big Mars Biodome or some kind of Apiary on a Mars Homestead, Llamas and Alpacas which maybe you could ride or train to work like a donkey and other much smaller fur farm animals and of course there are Miniature Donkeys which can be trained to bear loads. We've had discussion on Worms, some sort of Workhorse or Beast of Burden for Labor inside a Mars colony, insects like Bees, Lab Grown and Cloned Bug Meat, Coffee and Tea and Booze even discussed and Weed, building soil and Feldspar and pollination and cloudberry, Shrubs, Fruit, Trees and a book called "Farmer in the Sky" by Robert A. Heinlein, Aquaponics in a Natural Pond, Composting and Nitrogen, Mushrooms and Algae a place for Cattle and Lizards and Chickens? https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=6826 , https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=256 , https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=8790 , https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7380 , https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=7327Vegan and Vegetarianism. How Farting and Tooting Cows might Warm Mars?

Goats...They come in smaller size, do a similar job to sheep or cattle.

Will they work for you? They have a personality where they butt heads over nothing, climb everywhere and are near impossible to train, it might be easier to train a psycho stubborn Cat or a Wolf than it is to Train a goat,  they will jump, pawing, stomping, charge start biting, headbutting.

and in scifi Dune

Another musical quirk that raised eyebrows when Dune landed in cinemas was a scene in which an individual plays the bagpipes as the Atreides clan are ceremonially greeted.

https://www.radiotimes.com/movies/hans- … 529aba2c14

While the instrument isn't commonly associated with sci-fi blockbusters, Zimmer has now disclosed his logic behind including them – and it's unsurprisingly insightful.

“Everybody’s pointing at the bagpipes in the movie, but to me, they make sense,” he continued. “When you’re the Royal House and you’re being heralded on a new planet, it’s either the fanfares or it’s something that is ancient and timeless at the same time.

"I know that [ the bagpipes ] aren’t just Scottish or Irish. I know that the Middle East is full of [ them ]. Wherever you find a goat and some wood, you can build bagpipes.

"So, doing this thing where the instrumentation was really from ancient, pre-biblical times, [ then adding ] the most out-there electronics seemed like an appropriate choice.”

New aquaculture technology can help ease the global food crisis with 'enriched seaweed'
https://phys.org/news/2022-08-aquacultu … -food.html

Aquaponics food market and artificial animal feeding grounds for Mars? Aquaculture aka aquiculture or also known as aquafarming, is the controlled cultivation ("farming") of aquatic organisms such as fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae and other organisms of value such as aquatic plants. Urban aquaculture (also spelled aquiculture) is the aquatic farming of organisms, including all types of fish, cuttlefish, mussel shrimp and aqua plants within the urban environment (rivers, ponds, lakes, canals) Various types of urban aquaculture are currently in use throughout the globe - going into distinct types and their specific use, such as: land-based culture systems; multifunctional wetlands; ponds, borrow pits and lakes; cages and culture-based fisheries. https://books.google.com/books?id=2O6PCgAAQBAJ&pg=PA312

bacteria responsible for the conversion of ammonia to usable nitrates for plants form a biofilm on all solid surfaces throughout the system in constant contact with the water. An Aquaponic farm may have submerged roots  or a large surface area where many bacteria can accumulate. Concentrations of ammonia and nitrites in the water, the surface area determines the speed with which nitrification takes place. Bacterial colony care is important as to regulate PH levels and the assimilation of ammonia and nitrite,  pH will slowly drop, non-sodium bases such as potassium hydroxide or calcium hydroxide can be used to neutralize PH.

Ancient peoples may have used Aquaponics in Egypt, Greece, or the hanging Garden in Babylon, recordings still exist  from South China around 5 AD and Chinese agricultural manual Wang Zhen's Book on Farming described floating wooden rafts which were piled with mud and dirt and which were used for growing rice, wild rice, and fodder. A modern Aquaponic system will have a Biofilter place where the nitrification bacteria can grow and convert ammonia into nitrates, which are usable by the plants.

A Mars artifical 'biosphere' but with limited water?

Thorny Devil Lizard – Prickly Desert Ant-Eater The thorny devil (Moloch horridus), also known commonly as the mountain devil, thorny lizard, thorny dragon, and moloch, is a species of lizard in the family Agamidae. The species is endemic to Australia. It is the sole species in the genus Moloch. It grows up to 21 cm (8.3 in) in total length (including tail), with females generally larger than males. https://factzoo.com/book/thorny-devil-lizard/ They have quite a few names: “devil lizard”, “thorny devil”, “thorny toad”, “thorny dragon” and other similar variations. They also might be called a “horned lizard” because that is also a fairly accurate description but the Australian thorny devil is only a distant cousin not to be confused with the horned lizard species of the Americas which are also quite prickly with thorns/horns. Apparently, they separately evolved similar traits, they do look quite similar and both sit around eating ants.

Kangaroo rats, small mostly nocturnal rodents of genus Dipodomys, are native to arid areas of western North America. The common name derives from their bipedal form. They hop in a manner similar to the much larger kangaroo, but developed this mode of locomotion independently, like several other clades of rodents (e.g. dipodids and hopping mice)

Goats and sheep are not all that unconventional as milk is just one of the reasons to have something that is not a cow to get it from.

If you have an artificial ecosystem say 'Scorpions' eating other animals and then a larger Rodent, Bird or Reptile eating a Scorpion, they will need warmth but can endure high levels of ultraviolet (UV) solar radiation. If you create an Artificial Biological world and if there are Lakes inside the Domes of Mars then  some Marine Mammals have  low cancer rates, the ability sometimes explained by their unique DNA genes,  Fruit flies can tolerate many times more radiation than humans, Mummichogs a small Species of Atlantic fish can survive in highly contaminated waters, some animals might be engineered a gene called TP53 is known for its ability to repair damaged DNA, Elephants perhaps too big for going to Mars but maybe made inside an Artificial Womb the Elephants have extra copies of a cancer-suppressing gene.

Curious Canine in Brazil Turns Out to Be a First-of-Its-Kind Hybrid
https://www.sciencealert.com/curious-ca … ind-hybrid

A stray canine in Brazil has turned out to be a whole new breed of adorable. According to a genetic study, the female animal is most probably the first of its kind – a hybrid between a South American pampas fox and a dog. Otherwise known as a dogxim.

From the very start, its appearance and behavior baffled scientists. The animal wasn't like any canine they had seen before. It barked like a dog, and its eyes and dark fur looked like those of a dog, but its pointed ears and long snout suggested otherwise.

It also wouldn't eat dog food, only small rats.

"It was not as docile as a dog, but it also lacked the aggressiveness expected of a wild canid when handled," a conservationist who helped care for the creature told The Telegraph.

The curious creature was initially found back in 2021, having been severely injured after a road collision in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul. It was nursed back to health at the Center for Conservation and Rehabilitation of Wild Animals at the Federal University of Grande do Sul.

This region of South America is known to host four species of canid, and yet none of these specific animals match up with the rescued canine in appearance or genetics.

Re: Goats, Spiders, Mice of Mars... Animals Unconventional

Some use a Donkey animal feces as fertilizer some mix with other organic waste and fodder. A working animal, sport animal, food and biochemical resource or a therapy animal, the donkey can be part of entertainment and tourism giving rides for children or tourists. Some study say that a donkey can generate an average of 260 watts of power, the donkey seems to work more so per pound in weight it might have more 'horsepower' than a horse in comparison to its size. Donkey Power is a humorous unit of measurement https://web.archive.org/web/20140701135 … dictD.html

There are other strange humor terms out there beyond Donkey Power. The Banana equivalent dose, the amount of radiation exposure gained from eating an average banana. A pirate-ninja is defined as one kilowatt-hour (3.6 MJ) per Martian day, or sol. It is equivalent to approximately 40.55 watts. It is used in the 2011 novel The Martian by Andy Weir. Weir said in a 2015 interview that the Curiosity rover team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory uses the similar unit 'watt-hours per sol' in their meetings. The Sagan is a humorous tribute to Carl Sagan and his association with the catchphrase "billions and billions", a sagan has been defined as a large quantity – technically at least four billion (two billion plus two billion) – of anything

The Donkey can be big between 200 and 900 pounds or 90.7 kg to 408 Kg,the Donkey might measure measuring 36 to 48 inches (92 to 123 cm) from hoof to shoulder. After humans arrive the Larger animals might not be transported but test tube babies, made in artificial wombs on Mars, perhaps they would also be taught movements by an Artificial Horse just as Boston dynamics have robots which mimic the Robot dog

Donkeys and Hybrids.

The domesticated equine, it was once a wild African species long, long ago, 5000 years ago it separates into another species of animal, the Donkey is seen Egyptian painting, it becomes a working animal in Arabia, Europe and Asia. The Donkey 1.3-1.8% of its body weight of dry feed per day, it can consume as much as 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg) of food per year.  The Second Voyage of Christopher Columbus brought the Donkey to North America, the Gold Rush years of the 19th century, it is a the beast of burden some escape and a wild feral population was established. On Earth some farmers use Donkeys as a type of cheap but perhaps Incredible Guard of Dog, they are usually only good for a one on one battle but can kill a coyote, a fox, and other predator animals while protecting a farm, however the Donkey can also mistake a small calf or pig as an enemy of the Donkey is not properly socialized with these animals. The mule is equine hybrid between a donkey and a horse, the offspring of a male donkey (a jack) and a female horse (a mare) Mules are smaller than horses but stronger than donkeys, the hinny is the offspring of a stallion and a jenny or female donkey, zebroid is the offspring of any cross between a zebra and any other equine to create a hybrid.

Siberian Ponies? the pony term derives from the old French poulenet, meaning foal, a young, immature horse, the pony is a type of small horse, maybe it could appear on Mars or else a Donkey.

What would the Hoof the hard tip of a toe of a mammal do to the ground of a Biosphere, would it be bad for the soil and kick up the dust of a Mars biodome, would it make a site unstable, could it get stuck like a Mars Rover or the Horse or Donkey sink through the permafrost. Since domestication of the horse from ancient time, working animals were found to be exposed to many conditions that created breakage or excessive hoof wear. On Earth the horseshoe is a production of civilization designed to protect a horse hoof from wear.

In part of planet Earth 'ponies' are useful creatures but there might be regions on Mars where they fail?

Edwardian society and Captain Scott’s Heroes and the Tragic Quest for the South Pole

Captain Scott and his team to die on the way back from the South Pole?

The White Darkness
A solitary journey across Antarctica.
https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018 … e-darkness

On December 31, 1902, more than four hundred and eighty miles from the Pole, Scott gave the order to retreat. As they struggled back, Shackleton was coughing up blood, and by the time he reached their ship he was, as he admitted, “broken.”

Four years later, Shackleton, assuming his first command, mounted the Nimrod expedition. This time, he and three companions went closer to the South Pole than anyone had previously gone: ninety-seven nautical miles away. (A nautical mile, which is used in polar navigation, is fifteen per cent longer than a regular mile.) Yet Shackleton, fearing for his men’s welfare, retreated again. After returning to England, he didn’t discuss his failure with his wife, Emily, though he said, “A live donkey is better than a dead lion, isn’t it?”

“Yes, darling, as far as I am concerned,” she replied.

Captain Robert Falcon Scott died at the South Pole, living in the Edwardian era after his death, Scott became a celebrated hero, a status reflected by memorials. Maybe he made the wrong choices, the Wheels, motos, tracks and motorised sledges used on the British Antarctic Expedition. Roald Amundsen instead  used his dogs very effectively, going Native learned to use sled dogs for transportation of goods and to wear animal skins in lieu of heavy, woolen parkas, which could not keep out the cold when wet, he knew how to conquer the South Pole before he even arrived there. In more recent times  questions were raised about Scott's competence and character.

Some of the first Antarctic fossils ever found weren’t discovered by a paleontologist at all. Captain Robert F. Scott—the famed British explorer who died during his 1911-12 South Pole expedition—collected about 40 pounds (18 kg) of rock containing fossilized seed ferns.
https://expeditions.fieldmuseum.org/ant … ic-fossils

These specimens proved that Antarctica had once been warm enough to support plant life. But more than 50 years would pass before the discovery of an amphibian fossil jaw showed that animals had thrived there, too.

Beast of burden, or animal athlete? Donkeys were used for polo in ancient China, study finds
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as … -1.5512451
'It was an extraordinary finding,' says researcher Fiona Marshall

Donkeys have long been used around the world as beasts of burden — to transport goods through Europe in the time of the Greeks and Romans, and as an integral aspect of trade along the Silk Road.

Now, researchers have uncovered the first archeological evidence that donkeys were used for more than just work, but also for the sport of polo.

Fiona Marshall, an anthropology professor at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo., called it "an extraordinary finding."

"No donkeys have been documented, physically, in ancient societies east of Iran, so these are the first donkeys known," Marshall told As It Happens host Carol Off.

"They should be there, according to some of the ancient literature.… But there was no material evidence of any kind of people playing polo on donkeys — no paintings, no sculptures and no bones."

Until now.

British Reindeer: What you should know

Why were reindeer extinct?

https://www.globevale.co.uk/blog/britis … ould-know/
Reindeer roamed freely across Scotland in wild herds until the 13th century. However, they became extinct due to over-hunting and climate change. The final reindeer herds perished about 200 years after the last brown bears in Britain became extinct, but 600 years before wolves were wiped out in 1860.

The Vikings hunted reindeer until they destroyed most of the species, but wide scale deforestation in medieval Britain also contributed to their decline. As well as the market demand for reindeer meat, antlers and hide; a lack of forests meant the reindeer ran out of food.

Mars with large enough Biosphere could be home to zoos or lost species? For a very big animal for example Large Cats, I don't see much use for a 'Big Cat' Lion or Tiger other than it being a zoo attraction for the arriving space tourists. Zoos do run some very good 'Species Reintroduction Programs'

When a reserve on Earth is too small, carnivores can have increased contact with humans, resulting in higher mortality rates for the carnivore. The nature reserve or wildlife refuge sanctuary is a protected area of importance for flora, fauna. On Earth a wildlife corridor or green corridor is an area of habitat connecting wildlife populations separated by human activities. The national park is a park in use for conservation purposes, created and protected by national government. The United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law.

The Eurasian lynx has returned to several countries, they are not chilled out like house cats, Butterfly pollinator species have been successfully reintroduced. The USA has reintroduced the red wolf, China reintroduced Panda and launched its own program to reintroduce wild horses, pine marten a relative of the weasel were part of Britain's woodlands and Steppe Bison once an important part of England's ecosystem, Cheetah, Caspian Tiger, Java Tiger and Lion were native to Indonesia, Iran and India some Lions still exist in India, the Arabian oryx is being reintroduced and can go long periods without water in its harsh, arid habitat, gray wild Wolves have been reintroduced to Yellowstone, these Wolf are wild animals and not pet 'dogs' .

There's consistent evidence that meat eating wild predators help keep populations of herbivores in check, herbivores will not over eat small plants just starting to grow the introduction of predator comes with positive effects on ecosystems overall health.

What You Need to Know for Successful Winter Growing in High Tunnels, Greenhouses , and Gardens
https://www.bootstrapfarmer.com/blogs/b … igh-tunnel

Below we have some guidelines for ideal crops to grow in the fall and winter depending on your region. Every micro climate is different and the further north your latitude the more you may need to shift planting dates earlier. If you have an indoor space for starting seedlings and potting up to achieve larger root growth, you can give mid-season transplants a leg up before planting them out...

BEST WINTER CROPS FOR THE NORTH

June: broccoli, kale, cauliflower and cabbage
July:, beets, carrots, parsnips and turnips.
August: long day onions, lettuce, spinach, chicory and endive, mustard greens, arugula, scallions and radishes
    September: mache, garlic

There are a number of flowers that can be planted in the fall to provide early spring blooms. Many of these flowers are also edible

Space Biology Program
https://science.nasa.gov/biological-phy … ce-biology

Life in space produces profound changes in biology. All organisms on Earth have adapted to perform under conditions of gravity, atmosphere, and cycles of light and darkness that have not changed in millions of years, conditions which are altered aboard spacecraft like the ISS. For example, while circling Earth at speeds of 17,130 miles an hour, crewmembers of the ISS experience sunrise and sunset 16 times a day! Simply put, terrestrial organisms are not designed for life in space.

The goal of the Space Biology Program in the animal biology area is to understand the basic mechanisms that animals use to adapt and/or acclimate to spaceflight and alterations in gravity in general. Animals are frequently used to model human disease as well as how humans respond to stressful stimuli. The most commonly used model organisms for which genomics are now well defined include vertebrate species, e.g., rodents, both rats and mice, and a variety of invertebrate species, e.g., nematodes and insects. NASA has used these model organisms extensively to evaluate biological spaceflight hazards, elucidate the fundamental mechanisms life uses to adapt to microgravity, and apply such knowledge to advance human exploration, and for societal benefits on Earth.
