The individual ideas are NOT new (and they weren't new in 2004)
What ** is ** new (to me at least) is the packaging.
I thouight immediately of the various concepts the forum has discussed in recent times for an on-Earth testing and training facility for future Large Ship travellers.
Recently, kbd512 advocated on-shore testing for new technology for navel applications.
What Ian Flint seemed (as I read it anyway) to be suggesting would work on Earth as well as on Mars.
The application on Earth would be to (a) give humans a sense of what living in a confined space habitat would be like (with the additional touch of rotation) and (B) to give engineering students (under supervision) an opportunity to develop the life support systems that are needed.

for kbd512 ... While your interest in naval technology is understandable, and even commendable, it does not seem to me to be a good fit for ** THIS ** topic.
I was hoping you would pick up on the idea expressed by Ian Flint, because (it seems to me) it is a good fit for your Large Ship variation.
As I understand your design, you were thinking of building two counter-rotating torus habitats.
The connection to testing on land may be what led to the wording of your post #2.
It seems to me (the more I think about it) you may have read the post by Ian Flint, but your strong and even overpowering interest in the US Navy and it's situation may have caused ian's idea to slip out of mind.
In any case, if you ** do ** see a connection to your Large Ship variant, this would be as good a place as any to publish your thoughts on his idea.

Now that you've explained this was a joke, I have to admit the situation (including the joke of course) ** is ** pretty funny.
Ian Flint is NOT here to defend himself, and in any case, he is 18 years older and may no longer be with us.
for SpaceNut ... you've been thinking about sending email to former members for literally years.
Here (thanks to kbd512's joke) is an opportunity for you to invite a specific former member to come back to defend himself.

For SpaceNut .... it might make sense to read a few posts before inviting members to return ...
My daily visits to the posts of yesteryear remind me that not every post, and not every poster, deserves to be given more air time.
I've run across a few who ** really ** seem worth inviting back ... I'm thinking of the college students who would now be established in their careers.
