Solid State Battery

For SpaceNut ... I asked FluxBB to show all topics that contain the word Battery ...

To my surprise, none of the existing topics were a good fit for this item:

https://currently.att.yahoo.com/finance … 58105.html

The solution to both these problems is a special type of silicon anode in a solid-state battery, according to the US San Diego team. They eliminated the carbon and binders typically used in silicon anodes and replaced the liquid electrolyte with a sulfide-based solid electrolyte.

With those changes, they demonstrated that the all-silicon anodes were much more stable in the solid electrolyte, retaining 80 percent capacity after 500 charge and discharge cycles done at room temperature. It also allowed for faster charging rates than previous silicon anode batteries, the team said.

This article concludes with the usual caveat that the technology may not work at scale, even though it shows promise in the laboratory.

The researchers have attempted to deal with temperature range issues, charging time, reliability and other aspects of battery design that limit performance.

Edit: After rereading the post, I realize that 80% after 500 recharges is not that great, unless the range is 1000 kilometers to start with.

Re: Solid State Battery

That would indicate a cell barrier to the charging current or degradation of the materials either by over charging, faster charging current than is practical and internal heat damage.

As for the search its dependent on the box selection for the folder you are searching and if none or the wrong one is taken as the selection then a no response will be return for the search.

Re: Solid State Battery

Silica is not the same as silicon which is one of the many elements used to make semi-conductor of IC's these days.
In addition to silicon there is Germanium that is also used in lower voltage devices and there are others.

Batteries hold and give off charges and for semiconductor devices this is link a capacitor and simular to an inductor of which both can be made from the materials in the semiconductor list but are not true semi conductors.

As a follow up to SpaceNut's post #3

Quote from Google:

Silicon dioxide
Chemical compound
Silicon dioxide, also known as silica, is an oxide of silicon with the chemical formula SiO₂, most commonly found in nature as quartz and in various living organisms. In many parts of the world, silica is the major constituent of sand. Wikipedia
IUPAC ID: Silicon dioxide
Molar mass: 60.08 g/mol
Formula: SiO2
Density: 2.65 g/cm³
Melting point: 3,110°F (1,710°C)
Boiling point: 4,046°F (2,230°C)
Classification: Oxide

Re: Solid State Battery

This will have other applications not just for Nasa invents ‘incredible’ battery for electric planes

The US space agency made the breakthrough following investigations into solid-state batteries, which hold more energy and are lighter than industry-standard lithium-ion batteries.

Solid-state batteries also perform better in stressful environments, as they are less prone to overheating, fire and loss of charge over time, however they typically cannot discharge energy at the same rate as li-ion batteries.

Until now, this has made them unsuitable for powering large electronics, such as electric vehicles, as they require batteries capable of discharging their energy an incredibly fast rate.

This issue was solved by researchers at Nasa’s Solid-state Architecture Batteries for Enhanced Rechargeability and Safety (SABERS) unit, who were able to increase the battery’s discharge rate by a factor of 10 using innovative new materials that have yet to be used in batteries.

Re: Solid State Battery

looks like First Batch Of Solid-State Batteries Shipped By QuantumScape To EV Makers

QuantumScape, one of the most well-known solid-state battery developers, shipped its first batch of 24-layer lithium-metal cells to electric vehicle manufacturers for in-house testing.QuantumScape has the Volkswagen Group and Bill Gates among its biggest investors, and last year it managed to achieve an impressive goal in the laboratory with an older, 10-layer cell prototype. The tested cells retained more than 80% of their capacity after 800 charging cycles or the estimated equivalent to 240,000 miles (386,000 kilometers) of driving an EV.

The Californian company isn’t the only one trying to bring solid-state batteries to market. StoreDot, SolidPower, Samsung SDI, and ProLogium are also working on this technology, which has the potential to offer much faster charging times (0-80% in 15 minutes), a lower risk of fires, and lower manufacturing costs.
