For SpaceNut ... I am delighted to report that Noah has replied again ... apparently he has not been reading the forum, and did not realize I've been writing to him there (here). I invited him to start reading the forum, and I gave him directions to find the essay questions.

Thanks for your post #122 !!! I have included your question in Post #2 of this topic.

I want future applicants to be able to find the questions quickly and easily, so I edited Post #2.

For anyone out there in the forum readership ... You can find the two essay questions in Post #2 of the Recruiting topic.

***
I am not including the correspondence with Noah on this occasion.

I sent two replies ... In Noah's message, he reported on a paper he wrote about ? a method of education ? in the future.

He is (apparently) working on a revision which will be ready in July of 2021.  I'm looking forward to seeing it.

In the mean time, I invited Noah to take a look at the project to create Certificate for Journeyman Spacecraft Navigator.

This would be a course of instruction to be built upon the foundation of the work of GW Johnson, to prepare a person to take examinations for the certification.  This is ** not ** intended to be a college course.

Spacecraft navigation will surely be an activity that can be mastered by Union Members who wish to participate in the settlement of Mars.

There is no need for a College Diploma to pilot a spacecraft, although the two are not exclusive.

For Noah ...

This post is reserved for you (and for SpaceNut) .... I'll go looking for the two (simple) essay questions we'd like for you to answer)

SearchTerm:Essay questions for candidates for admission to NewMars forum:

Applicants are requested to provide two short essay-like responses to the questions:

From SpaceNut: How did you find out about the forum?
From kbd512: How would you like to help the forum?

Responses will be posted here (in this topic) for evaluation by the Administrators, Moderators and members.

Upon acceptance, the candidate will be offered one of the Recovered ID's previously created by spammers, and re-purposed for ** real ** persons.

***
For Noah (and all other candidates to help out in the NewMars forum) ... please send your reply to NewMarsMember * gmail.com

I'll post your reply here and notify you as soon as we receive the All Clear!

For SpaceNut ... here is a copy of today's correspondence with Noah ...

Hi Noah!
Thanks for getting back to me!  There is a lot going on, so I will try to help you through the first steps.
We only admit new members through this web site.  If you have time to review the Housekeeping topic you will see why. There are 905 messages in that topic.. to summarize ... we have received thousands of applications by spammers. We are cleaning up after the onslaught, but in the meantime, we accept new members via this email connection.
If you would like to become a member, please read my report about your email in the Housekeeping topic.
I will add the two (very simple) essay questions we have for you.
After you answer those (very simple) questions, I will prepare one of the recovered Spam ID's for your use.
Because this is a recovered ID, you will need to use the Recover My Password feature.  This simply sends you a temporary password at your email address.  You are then able to log in and immediately change the password to what you prefer. We cannot read passwords.
As a word of caution ... we are looking for members who want to actually contribute.
If you want to join and then do nothing (which is the case for hundreds of members) then joining makes no sense.
Have you thought about which of the ongoing projects you'd like to support?
Do you have one of your own to work on?

It would be very nice if you could support me with my English.Maybe you can send me the mail address of the engineer from Scotland. Then I will contact him.
Nice greetings,Noah A.

Sent from my iPad

For Noah ... In re-reading your message, I found the line about contacting the engineer from Scotland.

There is a protocol involved.  Once you are admitted as a member, and ** if ** the engineer has made his email address available, then you could write to him.  However, in that case, the members of the forum would miss out on whatever the two of you discuss.  If the matter is private, then that would make sense, but if the conversation would be beneficial to other members of the forum, and to readers of the forum who are not members, I hope you will consider a public conversation.

For SpaceNut, kbd512, RobertDyck and all members ..

I am happy to report that we heard back from Noah ...

He had tried to join using the regular pathway, and wrote to ask why that pathway is not working.

In the course of preparing my reply, I realized I do not have a handy summary of the two simple questions we are asking candidates to answer.

SpaceNut, you can help if you would be willing to go back to the top message in the Recruiting topic and add the questions.

I'll look them up for Noah, and post them here, so you will be able to just copy and paste them.

I'd like it to be easy as possible for applicants to find the essay questions.

In the next message here, I'll post my reply and Noah's message ...

For SpaceNut ... NewMarsMember report ... we have not heard back from Noah, but hope he will decide to help to move projects along here.

In case you catch this post Noah, you are certainly welcome to create your own project and enlist support, if that is your preference.

We have thousands of empty member Id's waiting for new members.

We reach the goal one step at a time, or in this case, one member at a time.

#1556 Re: Meta New Mars » Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics: » 2021-03-08 11:47:34

There were two messages in the queue at NewMarsMember * gmail.com this morning!

The first was from GW Johnson.  It was a longish message.  The overall theme was my proposal that Dr. Johnson's work of many years might be adapted into a form leading to an educational sequence capable of leading a qualified student from ground zero to certification as a Journeyman Spacecraft Navigator.  Dr. Johnson makes clear that his work does not include the advanced concepts that would be essential to achieve certification, but my expectation is that if we ** start ** those who can supplement the foundation he can provide will step forward.

The second is from a Physics student in Germany ... I'll post my reply and his message ...

Awesome, thanks! <<== The Google AI suggested this reply.  I am ** very ** interested in the development of the Google AI.

Your message is most encouraging.  I want to thank you for trusting me with your English!  I am most supportive and willing to offer tiny tweaks if needed, so please let me know if that is welcome.  I was stationed in Germany during the Cold War, and took a semester of German in college afterward.  I am comfortable using the Google Translate tool, because I have ** just ** enough exposure to the language to have a sense of whether the translation is reasonable or not.
It is possible you might be interested in helping the activity of the Mars Society, and specifically the NewMars forum.
Your study of Physics is most interesting to me !!! That was my major in college, although I ended up in Computer Science and pursued a career in that field.
In the context of the NewMars forum ... we have multiple projects (studies at this point)  underway ...
We could use some serious help!
I am NOT thinking you would do everything.  Quite the contrary ... I am hoping you are the kind of person who can build a team by outreach in your community.
We need help with the physics of RobertDyck's Large Ship.  You can see what he has in mind by carefully studying the Large Ship topic.  You will see numerous places where his ideas are questionable at best, or in serious need of adjustment.
We have a (to me) very exciting business concept under development in the Ballistic Delivery track.
If you have a friend who wants to become a Spacecraft Navigator, we have an experienced aerospace engineer in the group who I am hoping will lead development of a course of instruction that would lead to certification.
We have a member who is a working engineer living in Scotland ... he has proposed numerous projects, including asteroid mining, machinery for use on Mars and he is supportive of the Ballistic Delivery inquiry.
If you (or one of your friends) is interested in becoming a contributing member of the forum, the procedure is not difficult.
Check the Recruiting topic for the two (minimal) essay requests we ask of applicants.
If you want to become better acquainted with the work of Dr. Johnson, you can call up "GW Johnson" in the User search, and then read a few of his messages.
Thank you again for writing!
I believe that the young people who will settle Mars are alive on Earth today, and it would be terrific to have them assembled in this forum, under the sponsorship of the Mars Society.

For SpaceNut (and all who might be interested) ... the NewMarsMember * gmail.com received another file and message from Dr. Johnson this morning!  This one is about estimating flights using his (not patented but should be) 2 dimensional approximation method.

SpaceNut ... we're building up quite a collection of work that (I am hoping) can be turned into a formal tutorial.

While Dr. Johnson does NOT (officially) endorse this objective, ** I ** would like to see the forum evolve to be able to turn out journeyman level space navigators, or to put young people on a path that leads them toward that capability.

I know you're busy with 1,000 other demands on your time, but please keep this concept somewhere on a back burner, so you can put it on a front burner when the time seems right.

We just posted 17,911 Users in the past day or so ... today's batch is chugging along and (if all goes well) we'll cross 18,000 in the next day or so.

It's 72 degrees Fahrenheit at Naples Pier ... there's a good crowd out today.  There's a carrier on the pier with lots of fishing poles pointing up. I presume that means someone is anticipating there might be good fishing at the end of the pier.

For SpaceNut re #107

The membership of the forum is the same as it was last Tuesday ... the pool of potential members has expanded.

The first step in this long journey is to recognize that the people who are going to be setting up shop on Mars are alive today, and (to the best of my knowledge) none of them are participants in this forum.

We have prepared 800 potential user ID's for those folks.

The challenge is to contact them, and to provide a framework for building careers that will lead to a membership in Marsbound crews, or in companies that are supplying the massive effort that is going to be required.

***
There was correspondence from GW Johnson in NewMarsMember * gmail.com, and per his request it was forwarded to Calliban.

the content appeared (to my eye at least) to be supportive of the proposition that ballistic delivery of sturdy supplies is feasible, if the trajectory chosen is permissive, and the aeroshell chosen is capable.

There ** should ** be more than one Earth-based business that develops in this specialty.

On Earth, there (appear to me to be)  more cargo transportation systems than there are human transportation ones.

I expect the ratio of cargo to human transport we see on Earth to continue into Solar System activity.

In fact, that ratio is evident already ... the number of spacecraft launched with cargo far exceeds the number launched with humans.

For SpaceNut .... daily report

There was one incoming email from Calliban, confirming receipt of a file from GW Johnson.

I notice it is 82 degrees Fahrenheit in Naples, the Sun is shining, folks are out on the beach, and there are moderate waves.

There are even a couple of surfers.

***
We hit 12 degrees Fahrenheit here over night .... I found a starling (or a bird that looks like one) huddled by the yard fence this morning, and when the Sun shown on that patch of snow it turned to expose its back to warm up.  Things have been tough for man and beast lately.

For SpaceNut ... there is no new correspondence at NewMarsMember * gmail.com this morning.

Open requisitions for assistance include:

Master Chef to advise RobertDyck in design of Large Ship ... will be experienced in large vessel food service planning and supervision

Mechanical Engineer (or student working on engineering degree) to help with design of Ballistic Cargo delivery system for Mars (Calliban)

Other needs include:

Assistance with planning development of the work of GW Johnson into an educational curriculum to carry a student from beginner to able to navigate a spacecraft between Earth and Mars and back safely.

Assistance with computational fluid dynamics to find optimum configuration of regolith on Mars to receive Ballistic delivery packages

Assistance with design of flight model of RobertDyck's Large Ship.  Model to be flown to confirm or falsify theory of operation of design.

Assistance in filling out positions for My Hacienda project ... 7800 households who collectively support each other on Mars at a level of civilization comparable to First World cultures on Earth.

Assistance with connection to and use of Marspedia service on Mars Society web site.  See Video 54 of 2020 Mars Conference for details.

#1562 Re: Meta New Mars » Housekeeping » 2021-02-10 11:08:39

For SpaceNut ...

and ** here ** is the ** important ** message:

I did run worksheets in the rocket vehicle performance spreadsheet to cover max payload on Hohman and faster,  and min propellant at 150 ton payload,  on Hohmann and faster.  That updated spreadsheet file is attached,  and,  I wrote up an "exrocketman" article about it.  That article is dated today (Tues 2-9-21) and titled "Rocket Vehicle Performance Spreadsheet".  All the calculations are explicitly defined,  one way or another.

SpaceNut ... knowing you have a lot of things to think about and to keep track of ..

Please think about how we (forum) might able to provide a way for students to benefit from all the work GW Johnson has done over many years to develop what could become valuable learning materials for future space vehicle navigators.

I will investigate to see if I can set up a Dropbox account for NewMarsMember.

If that is practical, I would suggest we make it available for updates by NewMars Administrators, Moderators, and (above all) Author/Members such as GW Johnson.

I can imagine a book (perhaps eFormat) that incorporates many elements of the folksy wisdom of GW Johnson (from his blog) with the hard nosed technical foundation that a future spacecraft navigator will need.

There is need for test-as-you-go capability.  This is one of the key concepts I retain from the series by GW Johnson ...

Search for: "EducationDoneRight" with Author: GW Johnson

For SpaceNut .... there were two messages in the queue this morning ..

The important one is from GW Johnson and I will look at it shortly.

A reply came in from O'Reilly, stating that they are unaware of any books on Web Browser Automation.  Here is my reply:

Thanks very much for your reply!  I am unsure of the potential market for web browser automation.  All I can do is to offer a summary of what I am seeing locally, and hope you can extrapolate from that.
I've been a member of a non-profit web site forum for a couple of years, and the Administrator decided to promote me to Moderator.  I am one of two who are active at present.
The administrator decided to cut off registrations, because many thousands of spam registrations have accumulated.
I proposed to the Administrator that we convert the spam id's to useful sockets for future legitimate members.
The Administrator accepted the proposal and allowed me to pursue it.
I have developed a multi-step procedure involving three web pages, several queries, and a side-by-side spreadsheet.
I have succeeded in converting 720 spam ID's to intermediate state, at the rate of 22 per day.
The Administrator has been taking my output, adding finishing touches, and the recovered ID's show up in the valid User list.
We have 2600 ID's in the primary category of ID's to recover, and many thousands more beyond the low hanging fruit.
I estimate it will take three years to complete the recovery, at the rate of 22 per day.
It is for that reason I'm investigating automation.
The news that the Chrome Apps offering is being discontinued is disappointing but not surprising.  I would imagine competing technologies have come online to pull customer/developer attention away from Chrome Apps.
From the standpoint of an author, there would appear (to my eye at least) to be a market for a book about the many options available for browser automation...
Just to provide a running start:
1) Selenium and something that incorporates it with "leap" in the name2) Arduino Nano - this device is reported to be able to emulate a keyboard (HID device) 3) 232key ... this is a software suite that was developed to assist the measuring marketplace
I looked at Selenium but am holding back because of potential learning curve requirements
I did buy the Arduino Nano, and set up an Arduino IDE to program it, but again, am concerned about the learning curve
232key has a free offering, a paid offering, and a Pro version.
The Pro version is advertised as able to create control characters that would be needed for Web Browser automation.
The Pro version costs S42, and if it works, I'd be willing to make the investment.
I have a follow up question pending at SmartLux.
To use the 232key Pro, here is the configuration I have in mind:
Source machine:  Dell Laptop with a communications (RS232) portTranslation to USB: Radio Shack USB-Serial Cable Target machine: Desktop running Win 7 on a 64 bit processor
Scenario imagined:
Write Microsoft Visual Studio program to run on laptop ...
Set 232key Pro running on Windows 7
Start browser (doesn't matter which one) on Win 7
With all set up steps complete, transmit a sequence of control characters and text from laptop to browser.
Pause to allow operator to visually confirm update
Operator pushes Step button to update another ID
If all is well, operator pushes Run button to launch loop to update ID's until (a) queue is exhausted or (b) Operator pushes Stop button.

Subject: 20210206 Inquiry Marc Rochkind Programming Chrome Apps follow up POST
Please let Mr. Rochkind know that I ordered his book on Programming Chrome Apps because a non-profit I'm supporting has a need for web automation. Web automation we are thinking about would include POST commands to deliver data to a web page, and GET commands to confirm the desired end state is achieved before proceeding to the next phase of a multiple step process. The Chrome app site indicates it is discontinuing support for Chrome apps but has not yet done so (as of February 2021). Is there another book that would assist with developing a browser automation procedure? I am aware of Selenium, but was intrigued by the potential of a capability built right into the Chrome browser. The situation to be dealt with is described in detail in the Housekeeping topic at NewMars.com/forums. I am posting there as tahanson43206. Thanks!(th)

For SpaceNut .... another spreadsheet arrived from GW Johnson!

This one is self-documented.  It includes the capability of setting up three burns:

1) Launch (I would assume (but don't know yet)) the "launch" is from LEO.
2) Mid-course correction
3) Landing (this could (I presume)) be a burn to achieve orbit around a destination body

SpaceNut ... at some point, I'm hoping members of this forum will be interested in the idea of converting this body of work into a tutorial for a young person with the appropriate abilities and a basic education to achieve the ability to plan a mission.

It has been demonstrated that a combination of college level studies and on-the-job training (at NASA for example) can deliver a person able to perform mission planning.

In the Internet age, we have the opportunity to develop a currculum that allows a student anywhere in the world to achieve the skills necessary to successfully plan a mission.  In just a few years, it will be possible for individuals to find employment navigating vessels between Earth and Mars (and no doubt other destination).

This is for SpaceNut (primarily) and certainly for those who may be interested ...

The NewMarsMember * gmail.com account received another gift package from GW Johnson.

This one included additional spreadsheets and documentation, selected in expectation they will be useful to NewMars members.

Here is part of my reply ...

Hi Dr. Johnson,The four new files arrived safely.I sent them on to my personal email account immediately. <snip> I define success (in this case) as creating a tutorial that can be taken in a step-by-step fashion, using your spreadsheet, and now (multiple spreadsheets) as the framework.<snip> Your work can be represented in advanced technology, if we can enlist volunteers to cause that to happen.***What I would ask you to do is to join me in the forum, in conversation with SpaceNut about how we can build the kind of tutorial repository of knowledge I'm trying to describe.(th)

For SpaceNut ... if I understand your correspondence with Mr. Burk correctly, he is trusting you (and your support team) to manage the forum as well as he would do if he had time to spend on it, which he clearly does not.

In the initiative with Dr. Johnson, we have an opportunity to develop an educational component to the forum, while retaining all the creative thinking that has become a major value of the forum over 20+ years.

I am proposing that we create two new topics in association with the existing Orbital Mechanics topic ... One would be a tutorial, and the other would be a freeform topic next to it, which i am currently describing as a Peanut Gallery.  Another term would be fine if you prefer one.

For SpaceNut ... this is the report for NewMarsMember * gmail.com

A pair of emails and a pair of files arrived from GW Johnson.  I'd like to invite you to start thinking about how we can turn this gift into a tutorial that will have lasting value.  Ideally we would have a permanent repository managed by Mars Society, but in the absence of any indication that is possible, we can/should look at other options.

To begin with, we can make a topic dedicated as a tutorial, and connected to the primary Orbital Mechanics topic.

Here is my reply to Dr. Johnson:

Hi Dr. Johnson,
The files arrived and appear to be intact!  I only check this email box once a day, around Noon.
I'm looking forward to (hopefully) following through this time. Thanks for including the documentation!

For SpaceNut re Daily report ... We have no new incoming correspondence.

We are standing by for inquiries or applications for membership.  We (for sure I) are/am looking for people who are likely to be among the folks who will be in the first major wave of explorer/settlers who follow the initial exploration phase.

The ideal candidates will be those who think they might be job creators/leaders .... The world is populated with billions of job holders. The number of job creators is small.  All those folks who are willing to hold jobs are waiting for job creators to come along, to take all the risks of starting new ventures.

My hope is that the NewMars forum will become a place for future job creators to meet and coordinate their efforts.

The My Hacienda topic in this forum provides a framework upon which to build.

We can make that part of the standard procedure.

This is our third new member application in the new By-Invitation Registration procedure.  We are still working out the kinks.

For SpaceNut (and kbd512) ... daily report

We have another note from CaptJT ...

Hi , sorry I didn't reply yesterday; I had a very long day and ended up really tired.

Today I'll continue reading the posts about "educationdoneright" by GW Johnson and the topic "Large scale colonization ship" by Robert Dyck.
I've just changed my password and successfully logged in, so I think everything is fine now with my account. In the evening I'm going to proceed with my first post about "My personal interest in Mars exploration".

I'm trying to organize my schedule to become a more active member of the Forum since I'm really interested in it.
Many thanks for guiding me in this process!  Probably I'll have some doubts while posting, so if that is the case I'll let you know.

I'd like to invite everyone who is a Registered Member, and who is currently active, to think about how we can make the the experience for this new member as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.

I have said it before and will say it again as often as necessary ... the people who will be in the new communities on Mars are alive and in school or just out of school on Earth.

CaptJT is a model for the generation which is going to be doing the hard work of preparing for the journey, carrying out the actual transport of people and supplies safely to the new environment, and then succeeding in creating a self-sustaining community in coming decades.

In order to fund the expedition at a Normandy scale, a fair number of the folks who are in this cohort will be creating businesses on Earth on the scale of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates before them.

We are talking about attracting a cohort of job creators to this forum, to lead in creating the businesses that will provide employment for thousands and in some cases millions of people on Earth.

For SpaceNut .... daily report ... no correspondence this AM ... I decided to try sending a test email from the new account, in hopes that would confirm I set up the email address correctly.  This procedure is still in the early stages, and there are plenty of things that could go wrong.

An email was sent to CaptJTorriani ... hopefully he'll be successful in completing his part of the registration process.

I'll monitor the NewMarsMember email in case a problem does occur.
