None of us know how we became shipwrecked, none of us know where we came from. We just make shit up to while away the time on the island.
Wow.  You really are grizzled.  ![]()
nobody I know misses the 80's. i just remember my grandfather yelling at the very mention of reagan, who cost him his job because of his porking of the rich.
no, the wealthiest 1% doesnt control the economy. stock investments dont help the average joe. the real estate industry is fueled by the middle class, not the upper class.
You really should take an economics class.
Yes, our economy is mainly consumer-driven, but the wealthiest 1% own a LOT of the businesses that the average Joe works at. And I never said anything about stock investing. More and more Americans are getting 401k's in their benefits packages.
And perhaps its the region of the country I live in, but I know MANY people who miss the Regan days.
And my school doesn't offer an economics class, or else I'd take it. It's kind of sad because we have 4 Ag classes and 3 welding classes, but no economics. We're just poor country bumpkins, I guess.
So you admit that it is her economic position that keeps her where she is, not her sex or gender, correct?
This hypothetical woman's problems aren't mine. She screwed up, and that's her fault. I don't ever recall the law that states I have to provide a way for people who failed in the past to be able to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
God didn't create me as a cripple. My religion believes that because God GAVE humans the choice to sin in order to make salvation special, we are all born with sin.
Then why does God punish? If I choose not to accept His gift, I am punished. If I choose to accept His gift, I am rewarded. What "choice" are we really offered then?
If I hold a gun to your head, and I say you can choose between Door A or Door B, but I will kill you if you choose Door B- would you still consider that you have a choice in this situation? That's your religion. That's your God.
Obviously you've turned down the gift without fear, clark  ![]()
What are you talking about, clark? Our economic system doesn't FORCE people to stay where they were raised, and if they do it's their own fault for not acting upon the opportunities offered to them.
The funny thing about life is, you only get one shot at it. You can't go back to high school and get better grades after you've graduated. You can't go back and not do drugs, or be involved with a gang, or have a teenage pregnancy. All bad decisions on this unfortunate soul's part. That's the ONLY reason she's stuck there is because she didn't act upon the opportunities that were possible.
Answer my question, soph. Didn't all of those constuction workers loose their lucrative jobs when the wealthiest 1% lost their incentive for investing in real estate?
Face it. The investments of the wealthiest Americans affect us ALL. And it DID work for Regan, if you recall. People who miss the haydays of the 80's are a dime-a-dozen.

My faith tells me that God gave me free will because if I didn't accept his gift on my own, it wouldn't be the same.Your faith teaches you that God gave you the power to *choose*. And your faith teaches that God wants you to *choose* to believe in Him and follow His way, right? Your faith also teaches you that if you DON'T *choose* Him, then He will punish you for exercising your *choice* contrary to His wishes. He will reward you if you do as He wishes, He will punish you if you do as he does not wish.
I have just described the relationship I have with my pet dog.
You *choose* to be a pet.
I believe that I am not worthy of God, therefore I am effectively at the level of "pet". But my religion teaches that God gave part of himself up to give me my undeserved salvation, and to turn down that gift (that is free to anyone at any time) is worthy of punishment in hell.
If I didn't choose to accept his gift, and was forced to believe, then I would be more of a pet than believing out of free will. Your pet doesn't hop out of the kenel at the pet store and say "Hey clark! I want to stay couped up in your apartment all day! Let's go!" Rather, you force him to go with you. That's not what my God wanted.
You being a white male inherently have certain opportunities that are easier to get to then say a black female living in the ghetto.
Did the color of that woman's skin land her in the ghettos? No. It was most likely a lack of education (which, I admit, are worse in urban areas) which resulted in her poverty. I won't argue that socioeconmic position is a determining factor in opportunity (ie CEO is your father; grandfather owns such-and-such corporation; etc.). But most likely the black woman's skin (or genetalia) wasn't what put her in the ghettos, and that's what we're arguing.
As for everyone else, if you think I'm being defensive, I'll back off. My apologies if I offended anyone.
I don't get it. I was raised as a tolerant, sensitive 90's guy, and I still get labeled with the KKK racist-white-bigot stereotype. What the hell? The next (and last) generation of white men are respectful towards women and treat them as equals, treat all races fairly, and encourage minorities, and we still get this kind of crap. Can someone tell me where I can get my skin-pigment changed?
Oh boo hoo hoo WAAAAAAH! Big cry baby. You're twisting around what everyone's been saying here to make yourself look like some kind of frickin martyr. You weren't even a guy in the 90s, just a little kid, STILL a little kid. Why the hell would you want to get your skin color changed, if you can't even handle being white? Too bad someone can't make you black or female for a few days, it might be a good wake up call to another wise sickeningly arrogant, loud-mouth punk (YOU). Peel me a frickin onion already, so I can cry for you.
I wouldn't mind being a woman for a day. Men open the door for no apparent reason, they smile at you, an umbrella is assured when it's raining... oh wait... that's only when nice guys like me who respect women are around.
As for the rest of you, I'm sorry you feel that way. I really don't know who the mud-slinging is directed at, considering that Cindy bashed my point with her "socioeconomic fact". I suppose if all this forum is good for is getting your Jerry Springer "if-that-was-my-man-I'd-throw-his-butt-out" time, then maybe I will leave this behind. I'm tired of people saying I have it easy because I'm white. You're wrong.
What if the true religion ISN'T self-evident? I do have to admit that on the surface many religous practices and beliefs seem rather peculiar, and not very readily accepted. Why would the truth not be passed up?
Because there would be no point in faith if religion was self-evident. My faith tells me that God gave me free will because if I didn't accept his gift on my own, it wouldn't be the same. My faith says that everyone must choose their faith and have the opportunity to turn it down. That's just what I believe, and I've accepted it as a truth, so because you can't prove my religion is wrong (and I can't prove yours wrong either) we've reached a stalemate.
I get the NASA channel on Satellite TV, but it only shows Earth views about 10% of the time. The other 90% is an off-air picture with an astronaut in front of a galaxy, and those old 1960's films about the Apollo mission. It's kind of a techie format, with the film running length and a fill-in-the-blanks cover page about the film. It's really not very entertaining, but I do enjoy some of the Mars programing they show every once in a while.
As for the Earth views channel, it would probably be cool to watch while you're chilling out, or reading a book, or being generally calm, but for everything else I have to admit that it's like watching the paint dry. I'm talking about just a wide-angle view of the whole planet. The zoom feature would be cool, but if you had 500 million people using it at once, it creates a traffic problem. Would you suggest that they have different "zoom" channels you could tune into (ie hemispheres, oceans, continents, states, large cities, etc? You could feasibly put them on an interactive network, but there would have to be some pretty high access fees to make it worth anyone's time and investment.
The fact still remains that Cannabis is still a mind-altering substance, and when you're high you make poor decisions, which endangers the safety of those around you.
As for growing hemp, I'm for legalizing it (and getting rid of that stupid post office and making those 1 million workers grow hemp for textiles). But you, Josh, want to be on both sides of the fence by claiming that hemp is harmless and everyone should grow it, but at the same time if it is grown improperly it will become pot (higher than hemp THC content).
We had the chance to stop China back in the 1960's. All it would have taken was a few strategic thermonuclear detonations at their key facilities and the whole program would have been lost. Nixon (or maybe it was Johnson) felt that China couldn't pose that much of a threat, especially when Asia was as hostile of a place as it was. I guess that short-sightedness really leaves us in a bind...
And we can invade North Korea because we're not a rogue state. The US wouldn't launch our missiles if we were being invaded (which would never happen, but it's something we need to think about, nonetheless). North Korea has questionable integrity, they will use their weapons to create an uncomfortable amount of leverage on our allies in Asia, and if they continue to starve and experience economic destruction like they have up until now, who knows what kind of "blackmail" North Korea may be able to get away with. We will be the prisoners of North Korea's threat because we didn't act swiftly now while there's still time.
VooDoo Economics....
It's a Harvard Rule of thumb that certain business models shouldn't work.
It's a Reality Check when they do.
Cal, explain something for me- the President and many of our leaders focused on getting the "consumer" out their spending- buying- getting the economy going. Christmas shopping accounts for most of the profits realized in any given year- again, becuase of consumer spending.
Our economy and great fortune is built on a pile of small, cheap electronics- on consumables. The wealthy are few- they only need to buy so much. The rest of us non-wealthy types though, we number much more, and we all need the same stuff to buy.
Who would spend more, 100 wealthy people who buy a boat each, or 10,000 middle class and working poor buying groceries, presents, or paying for education?
The whole idea behinf givinh the rich tax cuts is the idea that they would buy luxary items (like boats) that equal higher paying jobs- or they take that money and invest it back into the system to create more jobs and the like- however, our economy is predicated on spending- on consumer spending- I don't think helping the rich helps anyoen but the rich.
All it does is make it easier for the wealthy to become more wealthy- how does this improve the lot of the average american?
Remember back in 1986 when Congress passed the legislation that took away the tax benefits of investing in real estate? Sure, the rich just took their money somewhere else... but all of those construction workers and others working to improve those properties were left up shit creek. The richest 1% invest in MANY things that ultimately create jobs for everyone else, and the eventual money returned to everyone involved is much more than anything the government could ever provide in a tax break.
Even still, the government does provide a generous amount in our tax breaks (no, my family had more than enough to buy a diet coke... we bought a TV, as you mentioned about cheap electronics).
Without WMD's, we would have gone to war with the Soviets back in the 1960's. This whole planet would have been devestated by the Cold War, instead of being a peaceful rivalry between two nations that ultimately diffused itself, with us on top.
And we have a right to keep tabs on people because they are living in OUR country, and they pose a threat to OUR safety. We should keep tabs on nukes because it's our ass on the line.
go to the doe website. how deep do you have to dig to find out the nasty realities of fossil fuel? the guy cut funding to fuel cell and electric car research. he can build all the nuclear plants he wants, and i support that, he intends to keep our cars running on gas. not signing the kyoto treaty. why?
Because PRIVATE INDUSTRY will develop fuel cells if they get into a bind, and they Kyoto treaty would have stopped our already stalling economy from progressing.
his tax cuts benefit the wealthy exponentially more than the average person. the average person receives a tax break of $300. A person making $100k+ receives around $10k+. explain how this helps the economy. People are more likely to stick the $300 in a bank than spend it on anything.
It's a Harvard rule of thumb that 20% of the people do 80% of the business. While giving money back to the lower class is good for small consumer industry perks, it's the folks with the deep pockets who invest and keep the money flowing.
if i were running for president...i would have a little self-control with regards to the media. At least wait until you get out of the room.
What's your problem with it? As far as we're concerned, that's his own fault. Don't say it's an out-and-out lie if it was just a stupid mistake on his part.
should i keep going?
I dare you to...
Why shouldn't we take all precautions necessary to keep terrorists out of this country? Why shouldn't we protect our interests and keep a nation hostile to us from getting nuclear weapons? Why WOULDN'T they nuke us if they got caught in a hole? Who says they wouldn't launch 50 ICBM's as they were overrun? It's a lot easier to keep tabs on a non-nuclear nation than an armed one.
Oh yeah... Colin Powell was going to run for President before the so-called "Republican media" started tailing his wife after she had a nervous breakdown and needed therapy. He pretty much said that was sick and that he wouldn't run for President. I would have voted for him...
Can someone tell me where I can get my skin-pigment changed?
you just justified any criticism. You live in Colorado. To see what minorities are treated like, come to New York City. Take a look around Queens, Harlem.
We treat everyone equally, yet weve never had a female or minority president or vice president.
to say that everyone is treated equally is brutally ignorant. nobody labelled you KKK, white supremacist stereotype. You did that yourself.
Your first point I didn't understand. How did I justify any criticism because I live in Colorado? We have an 8% black population, and 15% hispanic, so don't talk to me about racism.
Your second point I believe clark debunked very well, thank you.
Your third point was gibberish as well. Do you have lynchings in the Bronx? Do you have cross burnings in Queens? I can tell you that we don't have them here, either. And Cindy pretty much called me a chauvanist pig who got .24 cents more than her because I have a penis. I rest my case.
1) Business connections with Enron. Bush and Cheney have their hands very dirty. Unfortunately, Democrats are too timid at this point to show the country how corrupt they really are. This would be a far better use of $200 million than Ken Starr.
What can you expect when you've been a past CEO? Of course you're going to have ties all over the place. It's an accepted part of being a former businessman.
2) Oil is clean. Do I have to elaborate?
Who said that? The man promised to build more nuclear plants than ever before across our nation during the 2000 power shortages in California, and many are underway right now.
3) $20 billion to NYC
Be patient, my friend...
4) Saddam Hussein is tied to Al-Qaeda.
Do you know he doesn't have links to al-qaeda? Do you have access to the privilaged information of the American president? Do you have insight into the mind of an Iraq dictator?
5) He didn't know the mic was on when he called a reporter an asshole. real honesty.
So what? He called a reporter an asshole (it was "prick", actually). Why is that a lie? If you were getting some smart ass questions from a reporter while you were campaigning, wouldn't you say something nasty, too?
should i keep going?
Please do...  ![]()
The issue, in my opinion, should be limited to the realm of QUALIFICATIONS- not race. And this applies in all instances. If the only qualified canadites are white males, that does not neccessarily equate to racism. If however you can show that qualified women or minorities are losing to less qualified "white males", then you have a case.
Bravo, clark  ![]()
Riiight. honest hahahah. Liberal lazy eye? Try your own blind eye. Bush is stupid, and he hasnt even delivered 25% of the promised funds to New York after 9/11. It's what, a year and a half later? Hmmmm. There are too many lies to point out.
I guess lining your pockets with oil money while squashing any opposition is a good, honest virtue.
Yeah. And the Concert for New York and the Celebrity Fund Raiser didn't deliver 10% of their funds. Good call... ???
What "Republican crap"? Why should we not be able to keep tabs on people that are living in this great country but for the grace of God!? Why should we allow people (who could be potential terrorists, or else we wouldn't care) remain in this country if they don't abide by the laws? The funny thing about terrorism is, it only takes one success by their side to win. 99.99% of the time, the immigrant won't be a terrorist. But that .01% can harm a LOT of people. We can't take chances; it's better to be safe than sorry...
Propaganda is the publishing of biased documents that favor the opinions of the entity creating the publications. It's stuff like a war poster depicting the enemy in a bad way, etc. It's an effort to rally the public to the government. (or any other entity) actions.
As for OUR government creating propaganda, I suppose everyone making fun of Bush for being "stupid" and making up words (like misunderestimate) would look pretty shady to me... (**HINT**--) the media is more liberal than anyone cares to admit-- the Republicans only control talk radio, which nobody listens to anyway)
