#101 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2008-01-24 06:52:28

I was going to leave that conspiracy nut be, but when I heard the bit about holocaust revisionism, sorry, bye bye.

#102 Re: Meta New Mars » Some board problems » 2008-01-24 06:49:03

We learned early on that if we don't confine conspiracy people to one area (and make sure they post there), then the whole board explodes with those types of posts. Adrian created Intelligent Alien Life, in large part, for that purpose.

There's a very ... erm ... hands off editing policy here.

#103 Re: Meta New Mars » Revamped weblog - help needed! » 2008-01-06 10:56:35

HOLY CRAP

New years Resolution Adrian? Get more involved in The Mars Society / New Mars? smile

To those that don't know who this ghost character is, he's the guy above me, yes, that's right, I'm not the big dog in charge here, haha. (Though I have all his powers as far as administration goes, I just never felt like touching the blog since it wasn't really linked anywhere.)

But it's nice that this got updated. I think we can revive the blog and make some posts there. I have been meaning to respond to Jeff Bell's criticism of my reasonable One Man Suicide Mission to Mars. wink

http://www.space-travel.com/news/oped-05zzb.html

I'll look for a Wordpress rss feed, Adrian, let met do the phpbb side of things because I got it how I want it (no offense or anything!). Damn you for forcing my hand here and making me do something.   lol

It's been 3 years coming, don't you think?

#104 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-12-22 12:41:27

Well, that's what's happening. They're geniune users! wink

Ain't getting no bots that's for sure (300-400 a day!). Pretty much no way around a human signup. I wasn't going to block China from signing up, but if you guys want me to, I think I can. tongue

#105 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-12-22 07:09:01

If I just blocked all people who signed up with an email address from China, we wouldn't have these people. They're clearly manual signups.

#106 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-12-10 17:35:42

We're pretty busy guys. sad

I'm trying to be around often but it's physically impossible (sporadic internet access). I'd appoint more moderators but I gotta get the trust issue down first. Every time I appoint new moderators it's people I know well.

#108 Re: Human missions » International Space Station (ISS / Alpha) » 2007-11-06 18:18:46

I downloaded STS-120 EVA4 from NASA Space Flight. What an incredible EVA and what an incredible mission overall. We haven't seen anything like this since Hubble (and I was a lot younger when Hubble was worked on).

#109 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-11-02 14:59:55

Trying to have a more regular role but yeah. Computer access is sporadic at best. smile

Got those spammers, though.

#111 Re: Not So Free Chat » Sunshine (the movie) » 2007-07-10 01:10:43

It was actually pretty good. The science behind it was "sound" from a 'theoretical' standpoint (theoretical physics is kind of a joke though). They even got some theorists to talk about the science behind the overall dying of the sun (weird exotic particles are infiltrating the sun, etc). The end left a lot to be desired, though. And it was one of those (rot13 spoiler!) rirelbar qvrf types of movie, which generally leave a bad taste in my mouth.

#112 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-07-10 01:05:49

Good catch, suspicious email address, poor bastard took 4 tries to get into the system. smile

Isn't worth it for most spammers.

#113 Re: Meta New Mars » Most users ever online » 2007-07-04 14:45:02

just to give you guys an idea: http://www.newmars.com/josh/spam.png

And it's just a matter of clicking "delete logs" and "delete inactive" so it's not a big of a deal as it used to be!

#114 Re: Meta New Mars » Most users ever online » 2007-07-03 12:50:16

It's spammers. On a given day we get at the bare minimum 200 unique bots attempting to register. Sometimes I go into the spam log and delete 2000-3000 spam registeration attempts.

I cannot even think to imagine how bad it would've got if I didn't update the software.

And I know all you guys' questiona and comments about site functionality, I just haven't had time to get around to it. It's not that hard to do all the stuff that has been mentioned, but I just haven't felt like getting into it. I know it's a poor excuse. hmm

I suck.

#115 Re: Not So Free Chat » Hello all » 2007-05-13 17:00:12

We're here, just not super regular anymore. I guess that's what happens when you get older. You become irregular. Har. tongue

Welcome back, BTW. I know your nick from awhile ago. big_smile

#116 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Gone » 2007-05-11 19:07:47

Hey Marsman, I haven't been to RedColony in forever! Good site. smile

I use the Advanced Anti-Spam Control Panel: http://www.lithiumstudios.org/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=25

It's super cool when all of the features re enabled (just try registering and looking at the anti-spam captcha, really hard to get through even for actual people). smile

Best thing to do is use EasyMod to install it ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/easymod/ ), if you're up to date with the latest phpBB everything works out of the box, flawlessly.

Anyway, I'll try the Auto-Cookies mod later on tonight, right now I gotta get something to eat. If things start working for you guys, that fixed the problem.

#117 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Gone » 2007-05-11 16:05:12

It shouldn't matter, do you have any weird plugins installed? Are you connecting to https:// ? We don't have SSL on the server, and when I looked up phpBB and this error that could be a contributing factor. I'll try it on IE 7 later on and see if I can replicate the issue. What version *are* you running? I'm sure it can be fixed, maybe do a flush of the cookies. There is a script that can take care of this, potentially, but I don't want to install it if it's on your end.

#118 Re: Meta New Mars » New Mars Gone » 2007-05-10 21:08:15

I do not get this error at all. Did you guys clear your cookies? This may be an IE only related bug.

(And yes I tried IE, Firefox, all the browsers, and didn't get the error.)

What versions of the web browsers are you gentlemen running?

#119 Re: Terraformation » Floating Venusian cities or Venus vs Mars vs Titan revisited » 2007-05-06 12:32:14

3.5% of Venus's atmosphere is Nitrogen. Removing all the CO2 would result in a Nitrogen atmosphere 3.21 times as thick as Earth's.

So the question should not be 'where do we get the Nitrogen from', but 'how are we going to get rid of all this extra Nitrogen'?

Really? I always wondered where the Nitrogen to thicken Mars' atmosphere would come from. There's your answer. smile

#120 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Dramatic Irony : Durkin&Ball sued for acting like Fraudsters » 2007-05-02 01:21:20

The data does back up sulphates though.

I don't know about the CO2 lag, however. It is a big mystery. The comments linked articles suggesting that the lag was not as large as was presumed. I just don't know about that.

#122 Re: Meta New Mars » Spammer » 2007-04-24 01:48:46

I noticed. I think the user logged in and then the next day (while attempting to hit all the space forums they could find no doubt) reregistered to repost the same thing. They apologized for the double post, so, I imagine that it's okay. I'll just leave them be for now, hopefully they won't get out of hand like other posters. smile

(I'm keeping an eye out, and the new anti-spammer software is amazing.)

#123 Re: Human missions » Private Moon mission » 2007-04-23 11:56:36

GCNRevenger, I respect you even though you rain on our parades all the time (whatever happened to dreaming, damnit).

But. What do you think it would take? What's potentially the driving force for the private sector?

And I'm not talking about fake suborbital flights.

#125 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » The Clean-Slate City-State » 2007-04-21 21:57:29

Hi Michael, I like this idea a lot. Of course it would be super expensive to create and all that, but it's still a novel (if noble) idea. Self-sufficiency is something humans really ought to be attempting to attain.

Have you seen Jeff Vail's stuff?
