Just because you believe in what you stand for, doesn't mean you aren't a politically motivated pig.  You can't sit there and tell me that Jesse Jackson wouldn't like to see his mug in the White House.

#77 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-10 15:56:29

more often, the underqualified white person gets the job.  to say otherwise is ignorant.

Not if the employer is deathly afraid of Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow Coalition coming to boycott his business if he picks a white person over a minority.

#78 Re: Not So Free Chat » God, Creation, and the Universe Explained! - Life, the Universe, and Everything. » 2003-01-10 15:54:32

Don't tell me that.  Clark has pretty much convinced me that affirmative action isn't so bad, and I was deathly opposed to it before.

#79 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-10 15:27:23

I hope I didn't dramatize this.  Why should I have to move over to meet a racial quota?  Don't read me wrong; minorities should be involved equally in all aspects of society, but why should my right to be successful be compromised by doing that?

#80 Re: Not So Free Chat » God, Creation, and the Universe Explained! - Life, the Universe, and Everything. » 2003-01-10 15:25:23

Nope. You're parents are protestant, so that makes you a protestant.

Some people choose their beliefs, most just inherit them. Enjoy!

This is true, but I still find my parent's beliefs to be what I find true.  My parents are far less conservative than I am, if this is any indicator of how they raised me.

Funny how you rant on & on about religion, Cal, since you're not even a good Christian. You twist things around, your disrespectful to older people. Jesus was humble, you sure aren't.  Clark & Soph aren't buying your religious crapola. Neither is anyone else here. Get something through that thick skull of yours for once. Blah, blah, blah.....you just have to be the center of attention, like hearing yourself talk.  pppfffftt.

Hmmm... all this anger towards a complete stranger.  How do I twist things around?  When am I disrespectful to other people?  The rest of us can have civil debates, but you just have hatred and obscenities to spray.  Get a life instead of harassing some teenager that you've never even met.  I really regret telling anyone my age now, because you'd be singing a different tune if I hadn't.

And, like Jesus, I'm going to turn the other cheek and walk away George.  Have a great weekend!  big_smile

But you're saying that because inequality exists, I have to take the hit.  Why?  Isn't (shouldn't) there be some other way to get rid of racial inequality?

#82 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2003-01-10 15:11:45

Yes, alcohol poses a threat, but because society has had 4000 years to adjust to it, most people are responsible with their drinking.  It is the handful of irresponsible individuals that abuse it that give the bad name.

The same DOESN'T go for marijuana use.  I agree with clark; the point of drugs is to get f_ing stupid that way. But I suppose you're just parroting your daddy or preacher, or both.

Full of Baloney... kiddo?  Sure, everyone gets drunk at some point in their life (just like many people will get high), but only a small part of the population does their drinking to get swanked.  MADD and AA are there to support and deter that minority.  And what's wrong with listening to what you parents say?  My dad's a former drug addict and alcoholic, thank you, and all he has to say is that it's some pretty bad stuff.  I would look even more "f___ing stupid" if I didn't trust the advice of someone who's been there before.

Note:
bologna-  n.     a large, lightly smoked sausage, usually made of beef, veal, and pork   tongue

Have a great weekend, George!  big_smile

I don't understand clark.  Was that a response to my last post?  I've been saying that North Korea's real threat is that it doesn't play by MAD.  That's why we should disarm them.

Weren't the 60's goofy?  I mean, like hiding under your desk or under a newspaper during a nuclear attack would save you.

#85 Re: Not So Free Chat » North Korea - Well, someone had to start. . . » 2003-01-08 21:15:47

Wow.  I really screwed that one up.  I have several previous bets with the President Bush board, and I blended the two here.  I meant to say that the invasion of Iraq was a bluff.  My apologies, soph.

#86 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-08 21:13:01

Okay, clark.  Just remember that the Soviet Union eventually collapsed, and that Marxism died a long time ago (I'm sure it's still alive and well in your mind, clark  big_smile )

#87 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ancient Chinese Fleet Landed in America » 2003-01-08 21:10:37

Preston, lay off Bill O'Reilly.

Do you guys think the "Apollo" analogy of exploration is usable here?  (ie saying the Vikings weren't here first by saying they didn't stay is like saying we didn't go to the moon because we didn't stay there)  I don't think so, because there are SOOOO many places in the Pacific that would have been attractive to settle in (ie Southern California BEFORE 1972).

Soph wrote:

cal: you said that shes in the ghetto because of lack of education.  what can she do in todays world with no education?  many kids in the ghetto have missing fathers, and many have to take care of their families, and have to drop out of high school to take multiple jobs.  i used to live in a neighborhood like this.

But don't the white people living in the ghettos experience the same thing?  Don't they have the same poor education, the same two-timing fathers, and the same role as income providers?  It's not black.  It is mostly about where you live and the opportunities you have... But don't forget.  George Jefferson "moved on up" to the East side (yes, yes, he's fictional, but many people do the same thing all the time).

You can say that some people dont seize the opportunities available, but not the whole race!  I know some dumb kids in my, relatively rich neighborhood, who will always be rich, because their mommies and daddies made it big.  will the housekeeper ever get ahead?  no, theyre more concerned about meeting the bills.  what opportunity do they have?

I live in a middle-class house in a rich, Arizona vacationer's neighborhood.  We know this rich family that has two kids, and they both go to private school.  I go to public school, and I am still MUCH more informed on issues than either one of them will EVER be (sorry, I'm trying to be modest, but even they admit it).  They get poor grades, and there's nothing that daddy's money can do to erase that.  They might be able to have their parents pay for college, but it won't necessarily be a good college, and there is a surplus in our society of meanless college graduates (ie Philosophy major from a party college).  But I can rest at night knowing that I don't need my parents' money because I worked to get to where I am, and I'll do okay for myself in life.  It's not like I was born into wealth (remember, my dad's the UPS man and my mom's a teacher).

Nice post, clark.

You live in Colorado, have you even looked at how gay and lesbian people are treated? This is just a matter of sexual prefrence, yet all maner of discruimination is heaped onto this subgroup of our society- hatred is all around and in many shapes, and it will be with us for a long time. We must proactively deal with the issue in order to foster social stability and provide a chance for everyone to have the opportunity of the american dream.

Even better quote.  But I live near (not in) a trendy ski/mountain bike town, so I'm really not the person to ask about gay tolerance.  Everybody I know is pretty cool about it.  Plus, my uncle's gay, so I've kind of grown up with it.

#89 Re: Not So Free Chat » Earth from space on TV - Whole Earth viewed in full-time on TV » 2003-01-08 20:50:23

I always thought it would be really cool to be able to see night lights from space.  Or if we could edit out the clouds in real time.

I'd really like to watch the forest fires from space during the summer (I know it's sick, but they're still cool to watch)

#90 Re: Not So Free Chat » North Korea - Well, someone had to start. . . » 2003-01-08 15:25:40

Hey clark!  You might as well pay up the $5 for the concessions treaty.  The Bush administration has promised NOT to us concessions as a bargaining chip.  And the US says it doesn't want to fight with the North Koreans.  Good thing for me we didn't have any bets about the invasion being a bluff (oh, that's right... I've been telling you guys that all along)

#91 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2003-01-08 15:22:41

#93 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-08 15:19:29

So why should we tax the wealthiest investors out of their money that they would use to create jobs for the other 80%?  Keep in mind, buying a CD at Sam Goody keeps those Sam Goody people paid, even if you aren't a stockholder in the company.

#94 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2003-01-08 15:17:54

They aren't inferior; they pose a threat.  As a powerful, soverign nation in the position we are, we have a right to contain possible aggressors.

And clark, you're not being held hostage.  You're just hiding under the shield.

#95 Re: Not So Free Chat » God, Creation, and the Universe Explained! - Life, the Universe, and Everything. » 2003-01-08 15:15:44

You claim that it is your religion.  i am just gauging the credibility of your claim.

Are you saying I claim to be Catholic?

#96 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-08 15:14:25

youre right cal, you shouldnt give women an opportunity to leave the kitchen.  its her fault shes there in the first place.  the logic is a perfect tautology, either way, she doesnt get ahead.  i hold open the door for anybody, male or female, black or white, when they walk up behind me in the hallway.  does that mean im a renaissance man?

Who's bending the words now, Cindy and Proteus?  Haven't I told you already soph that I (and every sane human) view women and minorities as equals?  That's why I get so pissed off when I hear about affirmative action.  We view them as equals and we get shoved down into a hole.  I feel like I'm the whipping boy for the slave-owning Americans of the 1800's.

Every once in a while I thank god I'm not a woman.  Women today have an Impossible standard that our culture asks them to live up to.  To be a good modern woman, a woman today must both hold the traditional roles of mother, wife, and caregiver; but in addition they must now fulfill their own career goals as well.  Add to this the pressure our culture applies to women in reguard to appearance and beauty.

Don't you think that men have a difficult role in society?  Read some books about how boys are being raised now and find out.  It's not okay to be boyish; it's labeled ADD and treated with a big dose of Riddelin so that the parents don't have to deal with it.  Sure, women still have to fufill the role of mother and spouse, but those are biological.  It's not like we can say, Well, you hold down a job, so you don't have to fufill any family roles.  It's not like modern men don't help with (or perform entirely) the dishes, cooking, laundry, kids, errands, etc.

I remember you saying some rather offensive things about the pope.

do you go to church every sunday?  attend every necessary church service?  know the bible front to back?

What does that have to do with anything?  I said some things about the Catholic church and the actions of their priests, and everyone cuts loose.  Likening someone's religion to their dog is far worse than talking about credible evidence that the Catholic church knew about the actions of their priests.

#98 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2003-01-08 14:57:57

We decide who lives and dies by harnessing aggessors (ie North vs. South Vietnam, North vs. South Korea, Iraqis vs. Kurds, etc.)

while we are at it, I think we should just nuke the middle east, burn it till the sand turns to glass.

then we pave it all over, and turn it into one giant starbucks.

I hate it when people lose all faith in humanity.  I read this stupid poem about how we'll end up paving everything over and placing white cubes for buildings to make everything homogenous, and then we'll all walk barefoot through the grass and eat eels by the light of the moon.  Bight me.

If it weren't for those 2000 ICBMS sitting in their silos, you'd be toast right now, soph.  Be grateful for them.

#99 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-08 14:50:57

The bottom 80% do 20% of the spending.

The top 20% do 80% of the spending.

And that defecit put the USSR out of business, which I think was a good investment indeed.  We could have spent way more if the US was still in the Cold War today.

Thank you for comparing my religion to your dog, clark.  That makes me feel good inside.
