#51 Re: Liberum Olympia » Prizes ? » 2006-09-14 04:37:53

I was thinking of something... How about starting a contest for contributors to write articles for NewMars wiki, with 3 prizes (first, second, third) for a number of categories ? Something printed, preferably with Mars Society Logo on it.... Sent to the user by mail, no matter where in the world he/she is....

So, I guess we need someone who is a member of Mars Society to help us with this.

Example: Category Mars (as a planet)-> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Category ISRU -> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Category Human missions -> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Category Robotic missions -> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Category Space sciences -> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Category Culture -> 1st, 2nd, 3rd
etc....

What do you think ? And is there any member of Mars Society to help us with some printed diplomas, with Mars Society logo on them ? Or something similar... Maybe a map of Mars or something... I dunno.

Of course, all articles will need to meet some guidelines to be accepted.

#52 Re: Exploration to Settlement Creation » Mars Design & Architecture - ...(how do you visualize it?) » 2006-09-14 00:26:12

On Earth to keep liquid water in a pond below the surface ice the water must be at least 1.2 m thick. On Mars probably something like 5 metres. That's gonna weight something like 1570 metric tonnes for a 10 m radius, if the water is enclosed in a double walled dome. I doubt you can take from Earth a structure to resist such pressure.

Worse, if you want to make a plastic dome covered with water, the dome being round, and the water above plain, than that's gonna be a bigger problem. It would weight around 2100 metric tonnes, if the top layer of water is only 1 cm thick. If it's thicker than 1 cm, let's say 2 m, the entire water would weight 2700 metric tonnes. That's a lot of weight for a dome....  :shock:

Here's a preview:

http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/U … ltMainPage

There is a problem: Because of the poetry <div> which is a float, the contents doesn't fit too well.... Any idea how to fix this ?

#54 Re: Liberum Olympia » Redesigning some things... » 2006-09-13 01:54:54

OK, I'm glad you like it. Now, I need some ideas about main portals and topics in them. Something like

Portal:Mars -> topics: Water on Mars · Martian atmosphere · Climate of Mars · Magnetic fields of Mars · Life on Mars · Terraformation · etc etc...

#55 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Communism - Just like Star Trek » 2006-09-13 00:51:40

Well, speaking about how bad might be communism, capitalism, fascism, anarchy and every other form of government (or no government), I think we should always remember something history teaches us for thousands of years: no matter how wonderful is the system, there are always people which will corrupt, pervert or ruin it for their own selfish goals. It's the human nature killing and enslaving us, nothing else.

All social systems presented till now are vulnerable to such things.

Can there be a system totally proof to selfish people ?! I think not...

On Mars maybe a lot more resources could be diverted to education, psychology etc, than here on Earth.

For example, I've never heard of a school in any country which would teach children how to protect themselves from manipulation.

But this doesn't surprise me at all. No politician will ever support such an idea unless he's forced to. Why ? Because without manipulation, who will vote for him ?!

And that's just an example.

#56 Re: Civilization and Culture » Children growing up on Mars - ..problems and possible solutions... » 2006-09-12 12:08:54

Well yes, on Earth when you let your kid out to play, there is no possible danger to kill the entire city. But on Mars...  :shock:

#57 Re: Exploration to Settlement Creation » Mars Design & Architecture - ...(how do you visualize it?) » 2006-09-12 12:03:17

Ice for building material ? No thank you.  :shock:

Why ? Simple, it melts. Also, taking in consideration the Marsian air pressure, it would simply sublimate. And, remember, sometimes temperatures on Mars get above 0 °C (the higher ever measured was +27° C).

Even if temp. doesn't go above 0 °C, the difference in temperature from day to night is enough to crack ice, in a similar way rocks crack in the desert here on Earth. And I think ice is very sensible to this.

And about transparency... I don't think is that transparent, especially when you need something like 50 cm thick (which by the way, weights a lot).

#58 Re: Exploration to Settlement Creation » Mars Design & Architecture - ...(how do you visualize it?) » 2006-09-12 03:06:47

I was thinking more about a Biosphere 2-like approach for surface features, e.g., domes, greenhouses, rover garages etc. And of course, *that* tower overseeing the entire colony. big_smile Preferably taller then the Biosphere 2 counterpart. roll

But I think it's best for the living quarters to be burried in the ground. Protection against small meteorites, radiation, storms. Also, when you need some new rooms, you just dig them. Then seal the walls of the cavity with some polymers and / or foam, then place the walls of the new rooms, then start decorating. A lot easier than building a new dome or something. :idea:

#59 Re: Civilization and Culture » Children growing up on Mars - ..problems and possible solutions... » 2006-09-12 02:49:04

Interesting topic, I've been thinking myself about these problems.

But how about children safety and colony safety ? For example:

- John, where is Jennifer ?
- In the airlock, mom....
- WHAT ?! JENIFFER, DON'T TOUCH THAT -- *noise of air leaking outside*

or:
- I wonder John, what does this button do ?
- I don't know, let's press it... *alarms raising across entire colony*

Etc.

#60 Re: Liberum Olympia » Redesigning some things... » 2006-09-12 02:12:45

I thought about some improvements to the wiki...

How about creating some kinds of portals ? For example, a portal about ISRU, with short descriptions of technologies involved, and for each, a link to a full article. The same for Mars (well, the Mars page already has a structure similar to a portal).

Also, some improvement to the Main Page, with portals listed there, and some important links, replacing all the links in the middle ? Something like this:

http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/User:Maxie/Test

It this is okay to you people, what portals should we create ? I have some ideas, for example Mars, Missions to Mars, Living on Mars, In-Situ Resource Utilisation.

Maybe something about civilization and culture ? Technology ? Also, probably one about space travel in general...  smile

#62 Re: Human missions » Save-A-Stage » 2006-08-11 10:40:36

Of course, on Mars such an idea looks a lot better than on Earth.

Mars has an escape velocity of 5.0 km/s (compared to Earth's 11.2 km/s). Also, the atmosphere is a lot thinner, so there is a lot less lost speed due to friction with marsian air.

And instead a rocket sled, how about a magnetic sled ? In Europe, Maglev trains can easily reach 650 km/h, for example. How about reaching 7 km/s with such a sled on Mars ? I think it will not be enough to escape orbit (Mars' gravitational acceleration will pull the vehicle back probably), but at least there will be a lot of fuel saved.

And that would de very good for a RLV, IMO.

#63 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Followup on the Heim Drive » 2006-08-05 07:12:42

-A "new understanding" of physics... that nobody understands

Sure... Remember that probably 99 % of scientists believed Einstein was a dilettante ? And even today, 99 % procent of people can't really understand Einstein's Theory of Relativity, Riemann geometry and so on ?

The fact is that Heim / Droescher theory is quite easy to understand. Of course, by the 1% that matter.

-Bold claims of fantastic technology (anti-gravity drive)

Wasn't something similar said by past scientist about 100 years ago? A body heavier than air can't fly, thus any flying aparatus is impossible ? But wait, now we have planes...

...any one of which, fine, but all three? The chance that its not a crackpot sham becomes vanishingly small.

You know, this sound like a response we'll get from a person who lived in 1600s if we told him about lasers, radio, flying to the Moon.....

#64 Re: Life support systems » Protein Sources in First Colonies - An idea » 2006-08-05 06:49:00

I don't know how much nitrogen that are present in the Martian atmosphere, but if there is not enough of it then it shouldn't be to hard to find nitrate deposits in some form somewhere on the surface. Enough nitrogen is important because it is a main building block of proteins.

Of course, nitrogen is a macro-element for plants. But there is none in the atmosphere (actually there is 0.01% which = none), and there are no known nitrogen deposits. :? Apparently, Mars is devoid of serious sources of nitrogen. If this holds true in the future, it will be a big problem. There might be similar problems with phosphates.

We'll be taking plenty of nitrogen with us, in the form of food, and human waste. A lot of this nitrogen is in the form of urea in urine. Undiluted urine is an excellent fertilizer, I recommend you try it on your garden. Go on, pee on your peas, it'll do them good.

Nitrogen reclaimed from food & waste for n persons (for example) brought from Earth will not be enough by far to grow crops for the same n persons. This happens because the total biomass of cultivated crops on Mars is far greater than the mass of edible material from the same biomass. And from Earth they will only take edible food.

For example (a very rudimentary one): you take 100 kg of beans for the trip. But those came from a total of 500 kg of plants, out of which only 100 kg are edible beans, the rest are roots, leaves which are left on Earth.
Nitrogen reclaimed from those 100 kg of beans can be used to grow only 100 kg of plants, which will produce 20 kg of new beans...

#65 Re: Life support systems » Research @ USU Crop Physiology Laboratory » 2006-07-23 16:05:33

I just want to point out a site at Utah State University with some serious infos about space crops. I've been watching it for over a year. I think the research made by those people is important for future space dwellers, and some of you might be interested.

USU CROP PHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY

For example, click on Research and go to Dwarf Crops.

These early flowering, super-dwarf lines are important for studies in space, and as model crops for genetic engineering.

OK, thank you Josh for implementing it, thank you Chris Phoenix for writing it.  smile

#69 Re: Liberum Olympia » sp@mmerzzz » 2006-05-30 10:38:08

Seems like it's working  :shock:

Good job Rxke !

#70 Re: Liberum Olympia » sp@mmerzzz » 2006-05-26 05:02:02

OK, but who does have enough privileges to modify the source code of NewMars Wiki ?

#71 Re: Liberum Olympia » sp@mmerzzz » 2006-05-11 10:30:00

I think someone with proper privileges should start updating the wiki software and adding some extensions against spam. Read this for more info:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Anti-spam_Features

#72 Re: Liberum Olympia » Some issues » 2006-04-14 06:42:20

I have just protected the Main Page, after vandalism... I think it should stay like this.

#73 Re: Liberum Olympia » A wiki that is not a wiki » 2006-04-08 09:55:25

Given the dominance of Wikipedia can the new mars wiki really compete with hard facts about Mars? This seems unlikely and perhaps not even desirable; if it does it will detract from wikipedia and if it doesn't it will be 'yet another bland Wikipedia ripoff'.

As John Creighton already pointed out, there are a lot of articles on wikipedia which are not by far complete for a future Mars colonist. This is something very normal, as wikipedia is only an encyclopedia covering huge areas of knowledge.

For example, there isn't at all any article about the Rotterdam System. I just wrote one for NewMars wiki.

And, good work, cIclops !

#74 Re: Liberum Olympia » Some issues » 2006-02-28 12:59:24

1. I'm back. Sorry for my absence. Exams, and then I had to work a lot for a presentation at the university.

2. What's this article ?! ( http://www.newmars.com/wiki/index.php/C … ss_Company ). I don't get it ... spam ?

#75 Re: Liberum Olympia » Some issues » 2006-01-31 07:59:43

No, Rxke, i'm not a lunaticlol It's just that by covering things like space travel, life support systems etc., we also cover subjects that apply to other planets too. For example, Rheea could be a good candidate for an outpost (and, if I remember correctly, it's inside Jupiter's magnetic field, protected from radiation).
An no, no separate wikis, ever. Too many articles would be common to both wikis. Too many technologies can be used almost identically on more than just Mars.

Hehe, master thesis Rxke ? Congratulations! I'm working right now for my graduation theme (or however it is called in English ... i'm not sure).
