#51 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-28 21:21:32

actually, it does.  the wealthiest 1% is where the special interest money comes from.  and with something like a tax cut, you can pass it off as helping everybody, so you gain votes, while really only helping your campaign donors.

speaking of special interests.  dont you find it odd that the only energy lobby represented happens to be the company that used fraudulent accounting, and dick cheney happened to be on the board of directors, and dick cheney happened to sell his stock before they were caught?  Now, why cant we see the transcripts of the meetings?  What does he have to hide?

Are you just going to make hit-and-run attacks on Bush's advisors, or talk about the entire issue and focus on the President?  I don't know if you've noticed, but the Vice President's only job is to be a yes-man puppet, preside over the Senate (but only at formal meetings), and wait for somebody to gun down the President.  He's not exactly a big player in Washington aside from being a way to reconfirm the President's statements.

HA HA HA Soph!!!  tongue  You want to call Bush an oil whore now?  How about that $1.2 billion for hydrogen cell research!?  big_smile

Oooh... I got all excited.  Nothing on Prometheus, though.  He sure revealed some smoking guns about Iraq, but he left the blunt end up to Colin Powell on Feb. 5.

#53 Re: Space Policy » Call Junior - NOW - Project Prometheus & State of the Union » 2003-01-28 14:33:37

I just e-mailed the President.  A quicker email address than going through the CTC site is president@whitehouse.gov.  I mentioned that I was a conservative from Colorado who would like to see a manned mission to Mars "sometime in the near future".  I hope it's not too late...  ???

#54 Re: Not So Free Chat » State of the Union Address » 2003-01-28 14:07:43

I can't read the President's mind there.  If I had been in the White House when they pulled out of the nuclear treaty, I would have launched a thermonuclear weapon at every city in North Korea within the hour and evacuated our troops from the DMZ.

#55 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-28 14:04:54

Um first of all, our president is responsible for matters of economic importance, not the concert for new york.

I was trying to show that everyone has had trouble securing and delivering funding.  No organization (or the federal government) has done a spectacular job on this issue.

second, our energy policy should be ruled on by more than one company.  looks like bias to me.

Once again, Enron was a huge company.  That comes with some pretty substantial benefits.

third, going to war over a few empty shells vs. rebuilding the economic capital of the world--lets see.  i would rebuild NYC.

We need to make the investment now to protect our country in the future before this problem spawns out of control.  And we are rebuilding New York... there'll be a couple of nice, new buildings in that foundation by the end of the decade.

fourth, lets look at the stock market for what it is.  its gambling.  there is no security-just look at enron or the internet.

I never said the stock market was secure.  I was saying that the dividend tax repeal will make it easier for people to get into the market or turn a higher profit if they're already investing.

and i thought we had already established that due to the electoral system, and the jact that gore won the popular vote, obviously, not everybodys vote is equal.

Sure, my vote counts more because I live in a small state, but my parents' income doesn't mean jack #### on their ballot.

Who says he won't wait until March?  It really puts the squeeze on Europe if we turn the other cheek and let the inspections continue.  I hope he discloses some heavy military intelligence tonight to seal Iraq's coffin.

#57 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-28 13:56:39

Running over some chemical shells in the desert with a bulldozer isn't exactly a professional disarming job.  Not to mention that if they truly had disarmed them prior to inspections, they would have made every effort possible to show it in the declaration.  Wouldn't you make extra sure the US saw that gesture if you were the Iraqis?  Burying it in a shallow hole looks more like a quick way to get rid of it under the gun to me.

#58 Re: Not So Free Chat » State of the Union Address » 2003-01-28 13:41:40

Any thoughts or expectations about the SotU address tonight?  I know there's been a lot of talk around here about possibly starting funding of the nuclear rocket, but the issue of war in Iraq is important as well.

Let it loose, y'all...  big_smile  (you all)

#59 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-28 13:39:33

It doesn't matter if Iraq has build 16 or 16,000 chemical warheads.  The fact of the matter is, they were required by the UN to disarm, and they didn't.  It's like in court when you're trying to prove pergery.  If you catch the person in a lie, you can conjecture that their other statements might have been false as well.

Saddam said time and time again before all this that Iraq had completely disarmed and disclosed all of the weapons.  Obviously they haven't, and their word is worthless now.  I think that is an excellent ground to go to war on.

#60 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-28 13:34:03

1. A $1.2 trillion tax cut that did little for the economy, but a lot for votes and the pockets of the rich.

That's the beauty of democracy, my friend.  Everyone's vote counts the same, and the other 99% of Americans that didn't get the big break could easily outvote that 1%.

2. Perpetuating the war mentality by finding new targets.  Everyone knows the war increases a presidents ratings to the 80%-90% range, no matter how bad they are domestically.  Why didnt Bush take out bin Laden in tora bora when he had the chance?  Obviously it has nothing to do with comitting the money or manpower-$100 billion in iraq and many thousands of troops puts the lie to that.  Finish our real war first.

Clinton had a chance to kill bin Laden back in '96, but I he sat there with his thumb up his rear-end.  Plus, I think $100 billion spent on disarming Iraq is better than trying to rebuild Los Angeles or New York from the ground up.

3. Stock dividend cuts.  Lining the pockets of the rich.

Great.  Maybe now it will be easier for people to get into the stock market, and make it easier for people already there to turn a profit in a down economy.

4. Having his brother "assist" him, to put it lightly, in the florida election.  Catherine Harris had a very large conflict of interest, not in the least indicated by her numerous days off given by Jeb during the Florida election.

If the voters would have had enough intelligence to punch a hole **correctly** in a thin paper card, we wouldn't have had the whole fiasco in the first place!

5. Standing on the WTC site, promising funds to New York City, which our senators had to fight very hard to make sure that we would eventually get.  We still have only seen about $4 billion out of $20 billion, and even that amount had to be pried from the administrations hands.

I don't recall the Concert For New York paying out very much, either.

6. Why was enron the only energy company at the government energy plan meetings?  And why are the meetings shrouded in secret?  If the public has the right to know anything, it's what goes on between the politicians and lobbyists.

Being the 9th largest employer in the nation, and being an energy company, will probably land you some leeway when it comes to energy planning meetings.

I could really keep going, but I dont feel its necessary.

You know what?  I just realized it.  I think we've had this conversation before.  I kept thinking these points sounded errily familiar.  I can't remember the last time I came to New Mars... maybe we lost some posts.  Or maybe it's deja vu.  I could almost swear that the last time you said that, I said please do...

#61 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2003-01-28 13:24:17

Maybe someone can explain this to me...

Josh (or maybe it was Auqakah) said that the longer you smoke marijuana, the less tolerant you become of it (ie the more you smoke, the less you need to get high later on)

I talked to my marijuana user friends, and my father (a former user) this past week and they all said that they needed more pot to get high the longer they smoked.

Comments?   ???

#62 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2003-01-28 13:08:59

Whew.  Finals week is over.  I'm home sick today, so I can finally get some posts in.

The fact still remains that Iraq got caught red-handed with undeclared weapons.  I've heard they've found even more (different weapons... VX stores or something like that).

Can't wait for the President's SotU address tonight.  cool

Not to get off topic but...

How about those chemical warheads the Iraqis got caught with?  ???  :;):

#65 Re: Not So Free Chat » God, Creation, and the Universe Explained! - Life, the Universe, and Everything. » 2003-01-15 22:18:59

1)All the people who claim to speak for god seem to warp the teachings.  The Crusades, Jihads, terrorism, etc. are not teaching god would issue.  If god existed, i dont think he would allow us to warp his teachings so.

First, that's why I'm not a Catholic.  Second, what's God supposed to do?  Reveal himself to all so that he can correct some petty human indifferences?  ???

2)How can the people representing god be right on god and wrong on so much else?  geocentric universe, evolution, the inquisition, etc.

Essentially the same as my last point.

3)why have there been so many interpretations of god?  if god were so omni-potent, one interpretation would be enough.

I've stated it before, but I believe that salvation is only salvation if you came to it out of your own free will.  If God was omni-potent, there would be no point in making that decision because God would just be an undisputable fact.

4) Every religious "miracle" can be explained with science, which seems to refute religion at every turn.

I don't recall Einstein feeding 5000 people with a loaf of bread and 3 fish, or Richard Feynman turning water into wine, or Stephen Hawking causing people to bleed spontaneously from their hands and feet.

Josh wrote:

Proudhon's argument was that all the government existed for was to maintain roads, and so on, and uphold the security of a nation. And that it ought not cost any more for a rich person to use a road or be protected by a military than anyone else (common #### sense, really). What Prouhon doesn't realize is that the welfare of those at the bottom must be protected (actually, he does realize this, he just doesn't see why the state has any reason to do it, he thinks the individuals themselves ought to- anyway, the state has to protect the welfare of the individuals at the bottom our current condition, so we won't argue that), due to how fragile centralized systems are.

So what does that prove either way about a flat tax or a percentage tax?  I think I'm missing something (sorry).

You're right.  Bob might have external problems that are causing him to use things out of moderation, but why legalize pot and make it easier for Bob to abuse it?  Are we really helping Bob by making a quick-escape from reality legal?

Most pot users that I know are losers.  I know a kid who talks all week about getting high next weekend.  The thing is, he does it EVERY weekend.  His actions are copied exactly by many of the pot users I know.  They rant and rave all day about how the government is shit and wondering if they could blow up the propane tank next to our school with a .22 shell.

Out of this huge group of drug users, I know one girl who plays in honor band, stays involved in the community, and keeps up a reasonably good GPA.  Out of that huge group, ONE is a decent citizen.

I'm not writing very well right now (midterm week).  Bye   tongue   ???

Funny how much debt the world is in with the US when we have such a large defecit...

This forum really died.

Hey!  Aren't fate and chance the gods of Atheists?

#70 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2003-01-10 16:21:15

Correct me if you were being sarcastic, but ARE YOU CRAZY?!!!!

So we should just sit back and "take the hit?"  Lose 16 million people (ie New York or Los Angeles) because we were too damn lazy to act while the time was right?

Rumsfeld was right.  The only sure way to lose anything is to not try in the first place.  And I can guarantee that if ANYONE detonates a nuke within US borders or in a US installation overseas, we will shut down our borders permanently, and kick out all non-citizens.  And I would agree with them 100%.  Of course, I don't want to see this happen, so I think we should take all precautions necessary to prevent it.

You call ridding the world of the lowest form of combat light on substance?

you think people who drink, including me (im no alcoholic, but i drink occasionally), drink because we like how beer tastes?

Perhaps you drink Mad Dog 20-20 just for the buzz, but a Heineken is NOT chuggable.

I agree (and so does everyone else) that getting rid of all racial intolerance is the best thing to do.  But he got me to agree with the underlying concepts of what he was talking about.
