Cook Inertial Propulsion

The Advantages of this System
1. It is nonpolluting- it can be electrically powered.

2. Initial cost is very low by comparison to other propulsion systems. A large rocket engine can cost well over $50,000,000. The estimated cost of a CIP engine of similar thrust is only several hundred-thousand dollars instead of millions.

3. Low operating costs- mainly because it can be powered electrically. The rocket engines use exotic fuels that can cost over $100 per gallon and are very dangerous to handle.

4. More durable and reliable than a rocket. The CIP engine should be able to run for years without major repairs. A large rocket's life is measured in SECONDS! This fast breakdown is caused by the extreme heat and cold the rocket components are subjected to. The CIP engine is not subject to this type of problem

5. Extremely quiet- it will make less noise than a good car engine.

What we need to see is full funding of VASIMR, nuclear reactors capable of supplying VASIMR, and most importantly launch of Prometheus. Write to your congressmen.

Ah yes, vasimir..it has the potential to be great for interplanetary work and such. And I've been writing to my congressman.  big_smile

NERVA is good and all, but the whole concept of orion is a bit disturbing to me. Yes, i know that the bombs will be used in space, where there a significant amount of radiation anyways, but there exists the possibility of something going very wrong with orion. You will be carrying nuclear bombs on board.

#56 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » Teenage View on Iraq - Issue?  Don't care? » 2003-07-25 17:41:12

pootechie, the world is more complicated than you give it credit for being. There is never any country that is purely evil

you say:

I am a teenager disgusted by the ruling American regime, considering:

1.) The geo-political effect of unilateral, chauvinistic war-mongering
2.) America's imperial-capitalistic foreign policy: the root of international terrorism.
3.) The deep and widely publicized corruption of our nations leaders by the oil industry; a group with fundamentally amoral interest in war with Iraq.
4.) 24,000 people die of starvation daily, and HIV is epidemic in Africa, yet we spend $90 billion+ on a war that threatens international stability in order to displace a dictator who might have possesed weapons of mass destruction rather than one who evidently does... that's insanity.

but have you considered the flip side? Have you considered that perhaps the UNited States, which is arguably still the most free country in the world, is not truly evil? Perhaps our nation is corrupt...name me one nation that has no trace of corruption. "Unilateral, Chauvinistic war-mongering"? I think not...have you not considered what was going on over there as it was, and why other nations did not push for war. Have you considered that nations like france, germany, and russia were doing business with Iraq and did not want their commerce disrupted, even it it meant that a dictator would be overthrown?

What troubles me about the teens of today is that though they may complain about something, they will not take action. You have an issue with the government, do you not? Then join a youth political organization like JSA (Junior State Of America) and discuss your views, and perhaps even get heard by those in power.

Perhaps the one you should be disgusted at is yourself for simply complaining and not trying to improve things or let your voice be heard...

But how the hell do you stop the killing in countries where there are dictators or like Israel, a country completely set into the notion of eye-for-and-eye, tooth-for-a-tooth?

Perhaps the only way to do that is to expose the youth of one side to the youth of the other, and show them that their ancient prejudices may not be right after all, for it is the youth of the world which will one day become the leaders. The youth have been indoctrinated with a doctrine of hate, but that can be removed with patience, time, and understanding.

more stuff is available in the educational outreach section again...

Anyways, I am now a 17 year old going-to be senior in high school who is passionate about space exploration, and is quite competitive, especially in competitions dealing with space settlements or such.

#58 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » Degrees/subjects for future Martian colonists - What will I need to know? » 2003-07-25 17:28:20

you'd probably also need something like space science, aerospace engineering and such

bioengineering as well for terraformation

I might add that it is settlement on Mars for the purposes of terraforming it.

It can be found in folder '2003 Bradburyom rfp'

all i have to say is, like it or not, eventually there will be weapons on mars anyways.

#63 Re: Terraformation » What if there's life? - Should we terraform? » 2003-07-25 17:03:48

Sure, and we don't need America as a stepping stone to space.  Numbers aren't everything.  When humans are established on Mars, we will have a whole new economic and technological driver, with more favorable launch conditions to the asteroid belt and planets beyond.  Mars is the ultimate stepping stone to the stars, artificial habitats are the ultimate cop-out.

I completely disagree with this. As a person who has been involved in space settlement design, I have to say that artificial habitats are NOT the ultimate copout. I will admit that there are advantages to a planetary settlement, and indeed, would be in support of one, but I feel that it is important to have a settlement in Mars Orbit as well, thus giving us a more efficient "Port of Entry" to Mars, as well as a gateway to the Asteroid Belt, where there are innumerable resources to be tapped. True, there would be a considerable initial investment, but I believe that the payout could me much more substantial in the end.

Which brings me to the point of space-based businesses. Some satellite components can be built and installed in space less expensively than if they were designed, analyzed, and tested to withstand the rigors of launch. Relatively fragile components (e.g., antennas, lenses, sensors, and solar panels) are particularly amenable to in-space manufacture. There would also be other ventures more suitable to a space society, like deep-space exploration for instance. Eventually, with the outgrowth in space technology and investment, commerce in space will mature to the point that a "Singapore-in-orbit" would be valuable for providing cargo transfer and financial services to space-based businesses. I do not believe it would be beneficial for people to cut themselves off from the high-frontier because of being planet-bound.

Also, in terraforming, we will most likely need space-based infrastructure, and it would be more advantageous to have settlements from where such infrastructure could be locally constructed. Granted that one could possibly produce this infrastructure on Mars and launch it, but then one would still have to deal with launch costs.

I do not think the answer lies only in O'Neill settlements or planetary settlements, but in a combination of the two. Each has advantages and each has disadvantages, but do not discount the value that both have.

It could be even possible to integrate some martian genomic information inside the human cells, either the nucleus or the mitochondria. As the mitochondria did themselves by parasiting our cellular ancestors, before they became symbiotes.
I think the mitochondria are kind of happy to live in our cells, they find shelter there. Maybe future martian colonists would be happy to integrate their new martian hosts rather than to fight them. They might benefit from this new symbiosis and that would make these martians more martian, that could also trigger some new genetic shuffling and evolution in the human specie.

To this, I give my agreement. If you have life-forms that have existed on mars for who-knows how long, and have survived the harsh conditions, then it would indeed be beneficial to do this. Intergrating the DNA of Martian Bacteria with earth lichens, plants, and bacteria could be unknowably useful in the process of terraforming.

Ode to a Terraformed Mars

In eternity there lies a world,
a world of my dreams and my desires,
a world of hopes and a world of fears,
a world that I have long held dear

It is a world where darkness and light do clash,
where the eternal struggle is fought,
where eternity exists as a grim reality

It is a struggle of the beings of time,
for life and death, for hope and loss,
truth and deception, darkness and light,
as souls are ever lost into the depths of eternity.

It is the world where i was lost,
In the great tempest of humanity,
It is the world for which we seek,
this world within us, without us

It is a world that has shaped both you and I,
A world where life and death abound,
It is mars where I am found.

#66 Re: Terraformation » Terraforming Venus - methods anyone? » 2003-07-24 19:45:33

Loosely described, you coil wire around a planet and surround it with a cloud of generators to induce elecrical currents, which would project a magnetic field. Altering the angle and such of the cloud of generators would cause thje cloud field to interact with the planet field, and slowly but surely, would be able to speed up or slow down a planet

For a better description, see Terraforming: Engineering Planetary Environments by Martin Fogg. cool

I believe that a Dyson Motor could be used to change the planet's rotation, and perhaps its tilt.

Just out of curiousity, how much atmosphere Mars' gravity can effectively hold in without it leaking off into space?

#70 Re: Space Policy » Influence through the Youth » 2003-02-26 23:09:52

I believe the best way to influence politics is to actually speak out, and place public pressure on politicians...and that this must be done by all, including the youth of America and the world. As such, youth political awareness and activism organizations like JSA (Junior State of America) can be vitally important in getting politicians to acquiesce to the demands of the public. In this regard, I am an active member of JSA, working to, better represent the voice of the people to the Government.

JSA, the Junior State of America&, is an organization founded to promote increased political awareness among the youth of America, yet, an organization that like so many others has lost sight of its original goals that has lost its voice in the modern world.

My mission is "Rousing our Voices, Sharing our Dreams", restoring to the youth of America their voice in the affairs of this nation and in the world. It is a platform divided into two main parts, activism and expansion. The Junior State of America must refocus themselves onto political activism and awareness, so that more in this nation might be educated about what it means to be a citizen of the United States, and learn the doctrine of responsible exercise of our rights to preserve them. JSA must expand, for as of now, there are many among the youth of the nation, and even of our state, who have not had the chance to participate in the making of national policy, have not had the chance to let their voices be heard.

If we want to have an impact on the space policy of the nation, then we as a people, as a youth and a nation, must rally together and let our voice be heard!

I am really glad that someone decided to reply. big_smile

All these are open to all high school students (including sophomores), and all except FIRST Robotics are open for applications this year.

Contact ILSDirector@aol.com for more details, or interest in competing with any of these competitions. I am sure that the Exec. Director of the ILS can set you up with a team, if you so desire.

#72 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » Various Projects - WHich competition? » 2003-01-28 18:37:07

FIRST Robotics is a competiton in which young people learn about the automation required for a major engineering project by designing, building, and programming their own robot for a competition...in the course of 6 weeks. Over 800 teams worldwide are currently participating in this competition.

"SpaceSet" is a reference to the International Space Settlement Design Competition, where young people learn about space and engineering proposals by creating their very own proposal for a space settlement (population 10000+ people, year is around 2036) over a 3 month period. This competition has about 50 teams competing in it worldwide.

Ames SpaceSet is similar to the ISSDC in that is is also international, but it also accepts online entries, and does not have a separate prelims and finals. Many teams also participate in thism, and there is a $500 award for the winning team.

BattleBots is...well...its the famed combat robot competition where one tries to destroy the robots of others for a cash prize.

The International League of Students is an International organization of Students (jr high school to college) which works to promote international peace and education through collaborative projects bringing students together. We work on most of these projects.

It is known as the CIP, or Cook Inertial Propulsion...look it up. Its actually quite fascinating

#74 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Power Limits of Advanced Propulsion » 2002-09-29 23:40:16

There is a little known technology called the Inertial Drive, which converts the angular momentum of splitting matter into forward thrust. It requires no fuel, merely electrical energy, is capable of huge thrust output, and can lift itself off of earth. The technology was demonstrated to companies such as Boeing in the year 1999, and they are considering whether or not to acquire the technology from the inventor.

#75 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » International Space Settlement Design Competition - Space Engineering project » 2002-09-29 23:34:48

Of course, having more people participate in the ISSDC would be nice...as the International League of Students is looking for new talent for the design teams that participate every year. For details, contact the Executive Director of the International League of Students at ILSDirector@aol.com
