Hi mbastion,
The first rule about being a terraformist is never say never. The second rule is that nothing is impossible.
The Moon will hold onto a thick atmosphere for thousands of years. I have seen estimates from 100,000 to a million years, but even if it is a thousands years, whoever put it there could certainly replenish it as needed (top it off every now and then).
With an Earth-Like atmosphere, the Moon would be the right distance from the Sun (Same as Earth) for liquid water to exist on the surface.
The Moon’s rotation might be a problem, but that too can be dealt with.
The Terraformist Creed;
Never say never
Nothing is impossible
We can do the incredible
We can turn night into day
We will find a way
We can build an atmosphere
And make sure life lives there
We can turn wastelands
Into green forest lands
We can do the impossible
We can do the incredible
Never say never
Forgot the link to the nice sphere picture with the donut to the lower left;

A word of caution. Beware of possible fossils at the pixel limit. A good example, look at the smaller picture and see what looks almost like a spiral shape to the left of the sphere. Now zoom in to the larger picture and you can see that it is not a spiral. I am always wary of artifacts at the fuzzy pixel limit.
And I am still perplexed by the spheres. I want to know how they formed.
Check out these new microscopic pictures from Opportunity.

If I saw this rock on Earth, I would say it is limestone, and it has fossils. But this is Mars and we know it is not limestone, but I v=bet is formed in a similar fashion. As for fossils, I see many little fossil like objects in the rock, but they are probably just an artifact of weathering.
Nice sphere. What is that little donut object to the lower left of the sphere?
When I saw the face in the Viking pictures, I was hoping it was some artificial artifact. I even read Hoaglands Monument to Mars. But better pictures show it is just another Martian hill. It does have some interesting Geology.
So why such a drastic change in the face when we get new pictures? It has to do with pixel limit. You see, the original picture of the face was at the limit of the camera’s resolution. In fact, you’ll find that all of the artifacts listed on Hoagland’s website are at the camera’s resolution pixel limit.
At the pixel limit, things are unclear. That is when our imagination takes over. Humans tend to see faces in all kinds of things, the wood grain in a desk, clouds, or even the side of a mountain. When you up the resolution, I have noticed that Hoagland goes back to the new pixel limit to find more artifacts.
What about enhancing? When ever a picture is enhanced, data has been added that was not there before. I laugh at Hollywood when they take a picture, zoom in and enhance it so you can see something like what is written on a piece of paper. In the original picture the paper is just a white speck, but they show clear writing on it. Folks, that is not possible. You can’t pull out data that is not there. Pictures have a pixel limit, past that, there is no data to gather. You can’t take one pixel and enhance it so it is now many smaller pixels with new data, and be accurate.
I am not advocating turning all of earth’s deserts into forest or farmland (I love the deserts too, especially at dusk), but rather reverse man-made desertification and the larger deserts, like the Sahara. The Sarah is a harsh environment for life. There is life there, but it is sparse when compared to the rest of the globe. (This reminds me of the argument whether to terraform Mars if spare microbe life is found there.)
This United States size desert could add more habitable land to the Earth if it was turned into farmland and/or forest. I have also read that the Sahara is growing. We should at least try to reverse this growth, if possible.
How Stuff works is a great site, and I have been viewing it for a couple of years. Until today, I didn’t know they had Terraforming Mars on there.
Here is another good one of Mars;
What we need is a gravity lens scope using the Sun’s, or Jupiter’s, gravity well.
I read years ago that such a scope could show us contents on any Earth-like planets orbiting nearby stars. I would love to have a look at the Alpha Centauri System. With two Sun-like stars that can support planets out to 2 AU’s, it is a good place to look for Earth-Like planets.
This is a good one;

Back in 1994 (Before the Interent and when my personal computer was a Tandy 1000HX), I got a 3 set of Topographical Maps of Mars. Using these Maps, I used a poster board to draw, with prisma pencils, what a terraformed Mars would look like. I only did half of Mars. I was going to do the other side, but it was very time consuming.
Now with computers, it can be done quickly.
I need to take a picture of it and post it here.

Scientists Believe They Found New Baby Planet
Okay Bill, what happens next?
Check out these pictures Cindy;
Cobra, the sinking of the Troop Ship Titanic is a blow to the British. The British loose a major battle (I have to study my history and find the right battle) It turns the tide on the war and the Germans win. They become a great country where the Hitler and his Nazis party, can never gain the power he craves.
Have you seen any stories where we are actually living in a present where the history was altered by time travelers? In the original timeline, we did not exist.
I first thought of this while watching Back to the Future. Remember when Marty was playing Jonnie B Goodie in the 1950s. They had him introducing that song. Before he went to the 1950’s, I would have had him play that song in the 1980’s where he wrote it and no one had heard it before. When he got back to the 1980’s he would have been peeved to learn someone else gets the credit for his song.
The way they did it in the movie, they set up one of those wonderful paradox’s where we ask, How could Marty have known about the song before he went to the 1950’s if he is the one who introduced it in the 1950’s.
Star Trek usually does a good job with time travel stories. I like in Enterprise where the Vulcans do not believe in time travel.
What if we are living in an altered history?
I like to write, and I am working on a story where the Nazis caused the Titanic to sink to change history (The Titanic ended up being a troop ship during WWI. The Nazis, who have built a time machine, see sinking the Titanic as the key to getting them in power). In this story originally, the Titanic was not supposed to sink, and we, in fact, are living in an altered history.
Our hero, a time traveler from the 21st century, does not realize this until he discovers what the Nazis are up too (He finds out later that he is the one who gave the Nazis time travel technology). He sets history right(where the Titanic does not sink) and then returns to his future. There he finds the world a nuclear wasteland. As much as he hates to do it, he goes back and sinks the Titanic to restore the Nazis timeline, and his future.
Rob, I thought of that too. If the probe hit a rock, it needs a way to get around it.
Perhaps if it had some kind of radar to detect objects in its path it could adjust its course as needed.
The best thing to do is to find where the ice crust is the thinnest. There may even be some places were it is very thin.
Gene used Nazis in the origional Star Trek (Or a Nazis like society).
I like Time Travel stories if they are done right. Back to the Future was great.
I like the blue Andorians. Did they ever show up in ST The Next Generation?
Anyway, once again Star Trek will have me waiting all summer. They did this to me back with STTNG season finally with the Borg attack on Sol.
Lizard Nazis. I bet the Lizard Zindy(sp?) went back in time and took over Hitler’s Germany and then the world.
Now, when they ended the show yesterday, was Trip looking at his present time with an altered past? Or did they travel back in time- the wormhole vortex spit them out in the past- that had been altered?
I guess we will find out in a few months. At least it is interesting.
I like Enterprise. I think they are getting better with Star Trek. TNG was good. Voyager was better and now Enterprise (I never got into DS9).
Anyone watch the season finally of Enterprise.
I like it. Just when I thought this story line was over, boom!, they hit us with that ending.
In my travels around Mars , I have found the Argyre Basin is a great place to hunt for dust devil tracks.
Here is a wonderful example.
http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/e07_e12 … 02442.html
To get these vortex, you need a warm and cold air mixing. A good place for this is around hills or craters. That is why many dust devil tracks start at hills or craters. See about ¾ the way down the full sized imaged linked on this site http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/m07_m12 … 01206.html or in this one http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/e13_e18 … 00400.html
Check out this dust devil;
I have to disagree with you on this one. I logged many hours studying pictures of Kasei Vallis.
First your observation of possible plate tectonics is a good one. This is the general theory on the formation of Valles Marineris, which is like a great rift valley. Also, even if Kasei is a rift valley, they wouldn’t be reasons for Mars not to have water.
Here is a project for you. Study an Earth river channel and see if you get the same results you did with Kasei.
Here is why I believe Kasei is a river channel. It has meanders, which are formed by a liquid. There is also evidence of alluvial fans were the Kasei river dumped its sediment load when it entered the ancient Northern Ocean.
Here is an over view of Kasei.
http://www.msss.com/moc_gallery/m19_m23 … /mc10.html
What you may be seeing is areas where the escaping ground water broke the terrain into blocks. I see a little of that happening around Kasei.
Keep studying and coming up with theories.
I just read that Phoebe will be visited on June 11. I marked my calendar!
I like the Venus eclipse movie. I wished I could have seen it.
I heard on the radio this morning that today is national cowboy poetry day.
I thought I would pass on this site. The artist name is Norman Brown.

You can listen to 2 or 3 full lenght songs from each of his cd's
I like the Phobos over the limb of Mars picture. It is a Full moon shot of Phobos.
