#1 Re: Life support systems » Protein Sources in First Colonies - An idea » 2006-07-25 22:01:45

Space Colonization is fraught with such perils of unethical nature that the right of a single life to exist as it does naturally and freely must be absolute. There can be no comprimise...Eating the rest of the crew is easy by comparrison.

Aw, but the crewmembers... they look so tasty!   sad

#2 Re: Civilization and Culture » So what about Mars is appealing to you? » 2005-10-12 00:08:39

I'm lost as to why inhabiting a planet with nothing but monotonous plains of red dirt and red skies appeals to you.  What is so great about living in some super-confining environment on a dusty, featureless planet far from the beauty and freedom you can find on Earth?  Would you really want your children to grow up on Mars?

#3 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Concern about the Government. Will they allow black to go » 2005-10-11 23:44:27

A therapist on Mars will be essential since the montonous landscape and confining environments the colonists will live in would drive anyone crazy.  Someone will need to check the sanity of the therapist herself from time to time.  A therapist willing to go to Mars in the first place should be highly suspect.

#4 Re: Not So Free Chat » Wal-Mart truckers thread- 16 hour days - Moved from "Meta New Mars" » 2005-09-10 20:25:06

And *all* , and I mean really 100% of the drivers always point out to me the traffic jams are to blame to the trucks, always again. And then you look around you, and see a sea of biiiig cars, with only one passenger in them, and a queue of lorries/trucks at the right... And then I really have to bite my tongue not to say it is the cars that dont belong there, but experience has learned me that is soooo very bad for the mood of the driver!

Yeah, there are a lot of stupid people out there who seem to think that all of our traffic problems will be solved if we'd just get rid of those damn trucks.  People are utterly oblivious to the fact that if the trucks stop rolling they can kiss their posh lives goodbye as they're forced out into the forest to grub for snails from lack of supplies.

#5 Re: Unmanned probes » Private Mars Mission? » 2005-09-04 03:41:47

I think the fuel generation experiment would be a good idea.  Since the Mars Society seems more concerned about the actual colonization of Mars rather than pure science, such a mission could help advance its goals at least a little.  I think building a deep drilling machine to look for liquid, subsurface water would also be interesting.  Maybe have a lab on the drilling machine that would examine any samples of water for life.

#6 Re: Space Policy » Chinese Space Program? - What if they get there first » 2005-08-09 04:16:38

Think of these Questions :

1. I am a citizen of earth first ? yes / No

No

2. Then you are a resident of our country ? yes / no

No

#7 Re: Civilization and Culture » Jung & Atrophy of Instinct » 2005-07-30 23:48:10

Comments? Especially about the totalitarian aspect? Is he over-reacting? Are humans more flexible and adaptable than he seems to give us credit for? Or does this make sense and it'll behoove us to terraform (flora and fauna)?

--Cindy

I don't believe Jung is over-reacting at all.  History, psychology, sociology, everything pertaining to the study of humans has shown how easy it is for the masses to be whipped up into "totalitarian madness" by their over-reliance and trust of authority figures.  Some philosophers have postulated that one of the reasons modern humans are so eager for highly destructive wars is because the war gives people a "proper" outlet to express a kind of unconscious rage at being suppressed and disempowered by much of modern civilization (it's interesting that a lot of terrorists and pro-war people also tend to be very religious, and religion often attempts to ruthelessly oppress a lot of our instincts toward sex, etc.)  It's not good to champion the colonization of space because it'll only continue the cycle of war and competition for resources.  It's foolish to assume space colonists will always be benevolent toward Earth and they'd have the ultimate high ground from which to launch attacks.
