Re: What do you think of this?

no, you said you have nothing against mexicans  tongue

all mexicans are hispanics, not all hispanics are mexicans.

these people are making a living for themselves.  and they are a tremendous part of our economy.  the money they make filters back into our economy in stores, and many of them bring their families over.  when they become naturalized, they pay taxes.  their children grow up to be productive american citizens.  they do jobs americans would never do, and by taking these jobs, other citizens can pursue more lucrative careers.

Re: What do you think of this?

To relate this back to our base arguement, I'm sure you're saying to yourself, "yeah, illegal Mexicans start businesses, work at unpleasant jobs, and become productive citizens.  Why should we deport these Iranians in California if we aren't deporting the Mexicans we come across?"

Why should one wrong make it right to commit even more wrongs?  Why should not deporting a few Mexicans make it right to not deport a few Iranians?

To my understanding, those Iranians weren't deported, and I guess we're not going to deport them at all (thanks to our "friends" in Washington).  So I don't see where you're getting with this.  You didn't want the Iranians deported, they weren't, and we let them and many other illegals stay in this country.

Keep in mind, we do deport a LOT of illegals every year.  This was a rare exception, I'm sure because of the extensive media coverage.

Re: What do you think of this?

Our ?friends in Washington? didn't keep those people from being deported. Laywers did. Had they been deported (illegally, of course), they would have had one hell of a lawsuit pending. Deportees vs. DOJ.

It would have been one huge mess, and DOJ would have lost. Regardless of the Patriot Act.

few if any of these people were here 'Illegally'.
Those detained were here with expired visas with their green card status pending.

Re: What do you think of this?

I know if I was living in this country with a visa, I'd be sure to have it renewed AHEAD of time, and not waiting until the last minute to renew it.

you'll have to wait in line behind all the other people backlogged by the overburdened system.

Re: What do you think of this?

This was a rare exception, I'm sure because of the extensive media coverage.

*"Extensive media coverage" -- ??  What "extensive media coverage"?

Sincere question, no sarcasm.

I saw just TWO (2) news items relative to this matter:  Both at Yahoo! news:  The day it happened and a follow-up story of law suits being brought by Arab communities.

I saw nothing on the major network news channels.  Of course, I've been super-busy for the holidays; perhaps I missed something.  However, on the day the news broke [on Yahoo!], I went and turned on the television a short time later...nary a word from CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, etc.

The seeming "hush-hush" nature of this matter bothers me...unless, again, I missed some major news hoopla regarding it while baking goodies, wrapping gifts, and taking care of visiting family members these past 1-1/2 weeks.  sad

What's so unrealistic about having some intuition and getting your visa renewed on time?!

How many people do you think look at those Yahoo! stories daily?  How many people could look at those nice, short little blurbs in a day?  Hell, my dad hadn't even used the internet that day and he already knew about it when I mentioned this.

Heh, because the bureaucracy is too overburdned to let you? Your question is as stupid as ?What's unrealistic about going to a really popular movie or concert on time?? You're on time, alright- except the line is so long you didn't realize.

Re: What do you think of this?

That's why you camp out in line for a week ahead of everyone else so you get a good seat.  Do you show up to a really popular event right as its beginning?  No.

Re: What do you think of this?

Well clark, they don't literally camp out at the INS offices, but I don't know how hard it is to fill out a form and hand it in ahead of time.

Re: What do you think of this?

Tsk... most of America's bureaucracy is overwhelmed. The only one that's barely reasonably good is the DMV. And even these days it is getting bad.

Even if it takes months, what's the difference?  Get it in a few months ahead of time and play it safe!

Re: What do you think of this?

Cal, I'm sure a lot of people did... the point is, that not everyone can do that.

Think. If everyone goes in a month in advance, won't the system be just as bogged as if they went in at the last minute? It takes a certain ammount of time to process each applicant. This is, actually, why people do wait until the last minute (if they can). They put it off because they have to jump through the hoops anyway.

Re: What do you think of this?

Why can't you guys understand this?  Even if (out of some odd twist of fate) everyone turned their applications in ahead of time, it would STILL give the INS __ amount of extra time to process it!

They put it off because they have to jump through the hoops anyway.

Why is that the federal government's fault?

caltech, do you leave a football game in the second quarter to be the first one out?

No, but I'd try to get there an hour early to find a good seat!  :0

Re: What do you think of this?

are you dense?  months and months before hand is not last minute.  yeah, they all knew, oh jeez, the INS will be calling a meeting tomorrow, im using my psychic power to figure this out.  let me go renew my visa NOW.

please.  most of them renewed months in advance, just like they should.  stop blindly falling for republican crap.

Re: What do you think of this?

What "Republican crap"?  Why should we not be able to keep tabs on people that are living in this great country but for the grace of God!?  Why should we allow people (who could be potential terrorists, or else we wouldn't care) remain in this country if they don't abide by the laws?  The funny thing about terrorism is, it only takes one success by their side to win.  99.99% of the time, the immigrant won't be a terrorist.  But that .01% can harm a LOT of people.  We can't take chances; it's better to be safe than sorry...

Re: What do you think of this?

they did abide by the law

and our great country, as you know, is secular, so the grace of god means nothing.

and i was referring to republicans telling people every nation bush has labelled as "evil" is out to get us.  I've got relatives from most parts of the world who laugh at the idea that north korea would nuke us.  Even though we did fulfill our part of the nuclear reactor deal (we built 1, europe was supposed to build the other), they want to be a world power.  what right do we have to say no?  what has north korea done to us?

how many immigrants are there from arab nations?  and how many have done anything?  if we shipped out all illegals in this country, our economy would freeze.  and thats a fact.

Re: What do you think of this?

Why shouldn't we take all precautions necessary to keep terrorists out of this country?  Why shouldn't we protect our interests and keep a nation hostile to us from getting nuclear weapons?  Why WOULDN'T they nuke us if they got caught in a hole?  Who says they wouldn't launch 50 ICBM's as they were overrun?  It's a lot easier to keep tabs on a non-nuclear nation than an armed one.
