Re: Bloody broken login!

The newmars.com login system hasn't worked since I downloaded some software to reset my broken Windows XP Firewall.

I've checked all the right cookie and security options but to no avail...

Any ideas?

You seemed to have logged in to post the above post.

What is it about the login system that isn't working?

Re: Bloody broken login!

I have had this problem with IE6 go to the tools, internet options and delete the files, then the delete cookies and the restart the IE. When you login again double check to check to remember me box. Problem should go away...

Re: Bloody broken login!

A day later and I still have to re-login everytime I close the web-page.

This is getting annoying.

Instead of using the login button at the top,

try using the login panel at the bottom of

Re: Bloody broken login!

This will happen if you go to http://newmars.com/forums rather than http://www.newmars.com/forums

Can't think of a real remedy for it.

Can you set the cookie for the domain newmars.com instead of www.newmars.com ?
In Admin Panel -> General settings -> Cookie domain (or at least this is how I think it's translated into English)...

Re: Bloody broken login!

I've been forced to log in differently since your latest changes, as follows:

Google "new mars forums"
Click on NEW MARS FORUMS
Key in "dicktice" and my password to obtain "Log out [dicktice]" enabling me to reply to the forums.

But now, I have to key in twice to obtain the above.

Having just read your suggestion above, to log in at the bottom of the screen, I only have to key in my name and password once.

I'm happy with that, and submit my experience only to aid your mastery of the software.

P.S. I'm not able to figure out the new message system. Can you refer me to step-by-step procedures for sending and receiving messages to-and-from members?

Re: Bloody broken login!

It's possible to use most browsers to remember both username and password, it saves a lot of futzing about.

Re: Bloody broken login!

There seems to be another problem behind the issue of login. I have tried the login at the top of the page and the one that shows up at the bottom and it wants to have me enter both logins to get me on even after cleaning the cookies and temporary cache files.

Doesn't bug me all that much.

Edit:

Still logged in for now, still trying to debug what happens proir to when it shows that I am not.

Re: Bloody broken login!

Ok I am back from logining out of the dialup and when I went to go to the newmars site is had my user as being logged out. As before it took both login functions to get back on.

I hope this will aid in debug of login script for they appear to be different.

Re: Bloody broken login!

I never log out, and I have never experienced any issues at all. However, do you guys go to different phpBB type sites? Because I should probably change the login cookie ID to something special. Let me look in to it.

Re: Bloody broken login!

Hmm, I changed the cookie settings around. See, I just logged in at the top (as I always do) and it went with the first try. This is very odd.

What web browser are you using SpaceNut? And is anyone else having this problem.

BTW, I reset the cookie so everyone has to relog back in. However, that did not affect unread posts (I'm smart like that).

Re: Bloody broken login!

Ok just dialed up and the forum indicated that I was logged out, logged in at the top of the page ok on first try.
Red colony as well as does Marsdrive they have the same indicated 2001, 2005 phpBB and I have not seen it there.
The other boards are using other programs.
I never logout and I check the remember me square so not sure what is happening.

Re: Bloody broken login!

Seems the cookie information was set to the default configuration, as are many other phpBB setups. I just changed the cookie information to be exclusive to New Mars. So there won't be any conflicts with other phpBB forums that you may be going to.

Or at least I think that's what fixed it. smile

Re: Bloody broken login!

Don't thank me, I've been a bad administrator! The main thing that brought me out of my stupor (though granted I am on the road right now), is that someone had sent Adrian an email about the registration system being fubar'd. So I felt like a jerkoff and resolved to fix it along with putting in a catchpa sytem that was actually worth caring about (so far NO spammers have gotten through, and we have well over 1000 attempts already). Fortunately it was near the weekend when all this happened so it worked out okay.

The only thing I regret doing (and maybe deserve some love for) is deleting the "topic descriptions" resulting in hours of wasted time trying to bring them back. That was the only thing that truly involved a lot of effort on my behalf. smile

I'm going to modify the theme soon, (along with the links at the top and more user friendly "new posts" as it was before) I promise. When I have a nice Friday night that I can use all my time working on The Goodness.

But thanks for the sentiment, I really feel guilty about being absent so much, I really do.

Re: Bloody broken login!

Josh, have you considered switching the entire site to something better, an integrated CMS like Joomla, Mambo or e107 ?

Re: Bloody broken login!

maxie, Adrian didn't like that I moved to phpBB (despite that the old software was super broken, relied on Perl, and was inherently unstable; it didn't even use mySQL, and page loads were on the order of 10x more bandwidth usage!). If I were to move us to an even better system, I'd have to get his approval.

Honestly I'm happy with what we have now. smile The biggest problem from before is that I'd installed a plethora of IkonBoard-esque features to make the migration to phpBB less painful for users here, but no one seemed to use those features. It made updating the site pretty crazy, so now I'm just using phpBB approved mods that aren't so damaging to the software as a whole.

But it's not out of the question, I just haven't really considered it. Yet.
