READ THIS BEFORE JOINING THIS FORUM
New Mars is the Mars Society webforum kindly provided by the Mars Society. It has been around for over 5 years now, the forums for the Mars Society existing even before then. I (Josh Cryer) have been a 'regular' to these forums ever since their inception on a rather rudimentary 'guest book' type system. Over time the boards have evolved, moving from that old system to Ikonboard and then on to phpBB once Ikonboard stopped supporting their software. Adrian offically runs these boards, but I do most of the mucking about. For years there have been no "official rules" on these forums, which in reality isn't necessary. We all know how to behave, we all know how to act civilized and get along. For the most part. Indeed, the "pioneering" aspect of Robert Zubrin's "The Case for Mars" inherently suggests behavior of people who can get along. For the most part. So without further adu.
RULE 1: Don't spam. I mean it. I will delete your account, report your email, report your IP if it's bad enough. It'll be very very bad if you annoy me bad enough, and the spammers have truly annoyed me lately.
RULE 2: Act civilized. This is the internet. Follow common netiquette. Assume that if you act uncivilized and people complain you will be gone. I'm fond of deleting accounts. While so far it has only been spammers, I'm willing to boot you out of here.
RULE 3: Stay on topic. It's simple. We have a dozen different subforums here. There are plenty of places for your pet idea. At one time politics ran free in all of the subforums. This was quite damaging to topics which were popular at the time, and it made a lot of our old regulars leave. Don't let it happen again, as I'm rather fond of our new regulars. None of these rules subvert the TOS which you had to have agreed to when you signed up.
That's it. The rules will be enforced however. Get enough mods complaining and you get deleted and or reported for abuse. Act like a jerk maybe you get deactivated until it is remembered to reactivate your account.

From now on you will have to wait at least a day for your account to be activated (it could be up to a week if I disappear for any time period).
How is the new process going Josh, I see that the web site is still getting lots of new account created still.... have not seen any spammers as of yet which is a good thing.

I'd say it's going great. It's a lot easier this way, because I just go to the memberlist, sort by join date, and check out our latest members. 4 out of 5 are still spammers, but that's only because I haven't banned their email addresses.
Yet.

BTW, I support all my mods, just so you guys know. I'm behind you if you decide some people are being off topic or annoying. I know that SpaceNut and you Rxke have taken care of such situations before, and I thought that was a good thing. So know that I'm behind you. You wouldn't be mods if I didn't think you were good people.

Can I spam if I am civilized and on-topic?
Offline
Would it be spam then? Spam is uncivilized, by definition.

And yet it takes a civilization to create spam.
sounds like one of those zen thoughts.

Could aliens see our civilization as spam? let's hope they don't delete it.

Am I the only one who can't access the the mars society via Google and the bulletin board any more? I've learned since to key-in "new mars forums" instead, and the New Mars forum Index appears enabling me to log in as before. Any explaination--not that I mind since it's easier this way--because some may not have stumbled on this alternative method of loging in....

Might have been down when you made that post, dicktice, but it seems up now. Anyway, to access NewMars from the Mars Society website, you have to scroll down to near the bottom of the page on the left. There is a little box there that says "Random exists." Sometimes NewMars is in there, but if it's not just click "more" and it'll be at the bottom.
It is a shame that the website doesn't have a direct link to these forums anymore, but yeah.

No big problem. Googling "new mars forums," and then clicking on same, works a treat. But I bet you're losing a lot of trade by those who aren't as motivated as I was to ferrit out the method. How about publicizing it? Thanks for your efforts, anyway. dicktice

Rule 4: Read rule 2 and take it at heart!! Or GTFO
Greetings, a very frustrated former moderator.

Rule 2 refers us to and recommends adherence to Netiquette. I was interested in Rule 6 of that -
http://www.albion.com/netiquette/rule6.html
I don't think that squares with telling others not to answer a perfectly ordinary question put by a poster eager to make use of others' expertise. If someone asked me a question about law, economics,
history or politics, areas I have some expertise in, I would do my best to answer the question.

If someone thinks I have, personally, infringed either the second or any of the other rules, feel free to PM me about it and have a civilized discussion about it. I might even end up apologizing if you are convincing, the FSM knows I'm only human. Otherwise, I'd rather stop with the references to the subject, oblique or otherwise, in case (to put it very bluntly) "removing the shit makes it stink worse", as we say in my country.
Rune. People are people. Where there are people, there are arguments, and hot-headedness.
In the beginning the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a "bad move"

Rune - No, I don't think you've infringed that rule.

I would have replied to this sooner, but I had finals and had just about zero free time.
Anyway, with regards to my comment in the "Reusable Rockets to LEO" thread, I may not have said it correctly, but my essential point was that rule 6 mentioned in that guide cuts both ways. I and others on this forum do have a responsibility to share our knowledge and contribute constructively to discussion. But at the same time, the people who are asking for help have an equal (greater?) responsibility to make their best good-faith effort to use the means available to them to answer the question which they are posing themselves before asking other people to answer it for them. Given that you have been instructed how to answer your own question in such a way as to make it impossible for you to not come up with a ballpark approximation, and you have not done so, I did not feel that such a good-faith effort existed. I was also implicitly referencing the numerous (tens?) times which you have asked that question in the past, and in many cases actually received answers, if I am remembering correctly. Further, the question of the mass ratio required to get from LEO to Mars is totally unrelated to the topic of the thread. Though we were discussing delta-V, it was in the context of a rocket going to LEO, and your question really did not belong there anyway.
That said, the way in which I said it was out of turn, and for that I sincerely apologize.

Quite so- though I had to look up that idiom on Wikipedia Haha us silly uncultured Americans, not drinking tea and all.
Hop will certainly be missed if he does not return. I was my impression that he was done with talking in that particular thread as opposed to with the forum as the whole. Only time will tell, but I hope he returns.

Be aware, CyberEnforcer, that just because the posts between 2008 and the end of 2011 are lost, does not mean that you are not on as thin ice as you were before, especially when posting your crazy images. Further, the rule banning the discussion of "image artifacts" and conspiracy theories of intelligent alien life is still in effect.
