I'll install this after some other phpBB modifications. I need to get rid of the calander mod, and tweak some stuff. Hopefully nothing will be too messed up. Won't work on this for a day or two, but the spam must stop.

Re: Spammer

I tried something last night. For two days I had registrations set to be admitted by the admin. No spam. Last night I opened it up again. And low and behold, every single spammer was a new registrant. So I put it back on for now. I refuse to allow you guys to deal with spammers. It's BS. And it's easier to just allow access on a per-user basis. The only downside to this is that most legitimate users are going to have to wait at least a day before they can post. I am thinking of a solution to this. I believe it was maxie or maybe cIclops who said I could have new registrants PM me for access. This may be necessary, but it's fairly easy to tell the spammers from real people.

Mainly a convulted at-registration catchpa is probably going to be the best solution. This spamming crap will end. Or at least be taken care of. They've really pissed me off.

Thanks for putting up with my experiment guys, as I implement a better catchpa system I may need you again, but for now the spam should be stopped in its absolute tracks.

Re: Spammer

The following email addresses are banned indefinitely: *@web.de, *@gawab.com, *@*drug*, *@mail.ru, *@*.ua, *@cashette.com, *@bestboyfilms.org

They're responsible for perhaps 98% of all spam we get. *@gmail.com does have a few spammers from there, but I'll be nice to that domain for now (reporting the culprits seems to be easier).

Just today we had over 40 Guests. All logging in. All trying to post. Poor bastards. smile

Or should I say, poor bots. Can't post if I don't let you.

Mawh, being a benelovent dictator gives me the warm and fuzzies. I laugh in those assholes faces.

Re: Spammer

I deleted 399 'users' from the database. These were users who never posted, nor ever activated their accounts. The vast majority of them were either spammers, or people who just forget to register their account. It may have affected legitimate users, but since they were not activated I think I can be forgiven for this. I started doing this by hand but it was taking quite awhile to delete them, and a simple MSQL entry did it in no time flat.

Re: Spammer

Okay, we're down about 500 users now. smile

I'm confident with our userlist, though there are some spammers undoubtedly still in there, I'm sure their accounts are long dead. One day I may do another prune (for those with a 0 post count), but I don't want to affect legitimate users who would qualify for such a pruning. I've been pretty meticulous with my pruning.

If any more spam gets through it'll be 100% my fault, for approving a poster who doesn't look like a spammer to me, but is. Just wanted you guys to know. smile

Thanks again for all the hard work.

Sorry that spammers can spoil a good thing for all. Thanks for making it hopefully easier to communicate with less issues as your rules posting iterates maybe more threads will start to stay on track so as to be more productive towards the goal of one day soon going to mars.

Re: Spammer

Well done Josh ! And I like those forum rules smile.
Sorry for my prolonged absence, but I just got married tongue.

BTW, I had a lot of problems lately on another forum from spam bots, all coming from the same IP, but with different hosts.
Domains like:
wpoejgpwjeg3wg.org, dfpijfpwiejf.org, flghewegwopegh.org, ofdjgpwrigp.info....

Every day they register another domain, with emails coming from those, but the same IP. It's overkill. When I banned the IP we had a quiet period for 2-3 weeks, but soon human users started activating accounts and entered the forum from different IPs, but the users were created from the same old IP.

Just wondering if you know this Josh, where can I report those IPs ? I have no clue.

Re: Spammer

So far I haven't reported any IPs, most are from Russian ISPs and they would probably just turn a blind eye to me efforts. And it's not that huge of a deal at the moment anyway. Best bet is to do a whois and see who the ISP is, the internet host, if it's the same host, then maybe you can do a mass report on them and get something done. But yeah, you made me have a heart attack by responding. I've been really careful with blocking these jerks, and I thought I accidently accepted a spammer to post! tongue

But wow! Congrats 100x Maxie! Good for freaking you!

Re: Spammer

You should not be so hard on letting this one through.
At the time when the profile was created we were plugging more holes in a dike made of swiss cheese with the newly appointed Mod's. during that week.
No biggy....
In fact you have had quite alot of filtering to do with all the newest profiles I'm sure.

Re: Spammer

I actived a user who may be a spammer, (viny45) just a heads up. I tend to search on Google the non-obvious users and if they match up with other spammers they get the boot. This particular user is perplexing, and the email address looks legit, so yeah.

Don't hate me. tongue

Re: Spammer

Not sure what to about Marzio - he posts sometimes in English and sometimes in Italian, but his last post is just his own url. Now his posts are appearing everywhere, is this spam?

Re: Spammer

Hey guys, sorry I didn't respond so soon, I have been keeping an eye out, and doing weekly pruning of spammers. It seems we get one legit user a week, and even then, those silly buggers do not fill out their profiles! Sometimes some guys will leak through because I am not having a super evil enforcement policy (only one, yes, one of the new users since this policy was implemented filled out their profile, and I know for a fact others who have not are legit users because a google search will bring up their my space page or some mailing list or whatever that they're part of, it sucks, but if only more people would obey the rules/policy it would be SO easy to active people).

I will be running off for a month or so but I will probably have access to the internet. If not I will give you guys a link to a third party application that lets you delete the spammers completely from the database. It's pretty easy to work with and makes my job a billion million times easier.
